Mommy bloggers are a fun, fantastic niche with wide-reaching power to influence purchasing power among some 37 million women who read them, according to BlogHer. They write about a full range of issues—their kids, their marriages, their jobs, and the challenges of juggling all the expectations. Some of them are entrepreneurs, running enterprises that cater to the parenting and child market. Some are taking on the cultural norms of parenting with a heavy dose of snark and reality-check honesty. And others are high-level hobby bloggers simply sharing their thoughts on products and services they trust and recommend.
We started our research with Babble’s 2011 list of Top Mommy Bloggers and combed through it to discover which mommy bloggers were engaging on social in our favorite ways. As you know, it’s not just about the numbers of followers. Instead, we prefer to focus on engagement. See what you think!

3. 1. Rebecca Wolf
Girl’s Gone Child
Rebecca came up on several “best of” lists
over multiple years—best written, best
graphic layout, Top 50. She is an LA style
maven mom who says, “A. It's a wonderful
feeling, to be needed. B. It's a terrifying
feeling, to be needed. C. All of the above.”
She is also the “unofficial spokesperson
for unitards.” There you have Rebecca’s
quirky style in a nutshell.
Rebecca has only 14K Twitter followers,
but she is constantly in conversation with
her audience. Her photography is
stunning. Her YouTube channel has 200K
+ views. The videos feature her kids, with
great indie music added. For fashion,
music, and engagement, we are going
wild with Rebecca.

4. 2. Heather Armstrong
Dooce
Heather is the “Queen of Mommy
Bloggers,” a best selling author, and her
blog, Dooce.com, is wildly popular. She
was fired from her corporate job for her
personal blogging in 2002 and she is
famous for helping Maytag understand
the clout of having over 1 million
followers on Twitter. Talk about a brand
wake-up call. Yes, that’s Heather.
Heather announced very recently that
she and her husband are separating.
She has asked for compassion from her
readers as she works through her life
“out loud.” This open candor is her
signature style. She gets points with us
for her transparency. How this change
will impact and shape her blog remains
unclear, but we appreciate her honesty.

5. 3. Jenny Lawson
The Bloggess
200K+ Twitter followers? Check. High-
profile admirers? Check. Potty mouth?
Check. But, seriously, don’t go visit her
website if you get offended by profanity,
because it’s there—a lot.
Why would we suggest a mom blogger
who cusses like a sailor? She’s funny.
She’s engaging. She doesn’t shy away
from connecting her home life with all
other facets of life (business, politics and
more), almost in spite of being a parent.
She’s often called out as both a fan
favorite and numbers queen. She’s got
26K fans on Facebook. She’s fearless. In
an industry that often tiptoes around the
more sensitive issues related to family and
children, Jenny steps right up and tells it
like she sees it. We like her moxie.

6. 4. Ree Drummond
The Pioneer Woman
Ree had us at her tag line: “Flowing
through life in the country—one calf nut at a
time.” Snark seems to run in this genre,
doesn’t it? What we like so much about
Ree is, admittedly, her reach. Her social
media numbers are impressive: She hosts
360K+ fans on Facebook, 275K+ on
Twitter, and authors a wildly popular blog.
She came up repeatedly in our online
search.
Ree claims she was raised a “a middle
child who grew up on the seventh fairway
of a golf course in a corporate town,” so
country life is a big move away from her
roots. We like how she adds substantial
content value while channeling Lucile Ball!

7. 5. Jill Smokler
Scary Mommy
We explored other online sources
besides Babble and came across Jill.
Her numbers are impressive: 30K fans
on Facebook and 200K+ followers on
Twitter. Her blog gets 1+ million page
views per month. She has a string of
blogging awards to her credit. What we
like most is that Jill has built a
community around her online presence
in a way few others have.
Jill created several different forums for
parents to openly discuss the
challenges of parenting. She created
The Scary Mommy Society, The Scary
Mommy Confessional, and The Scary
Mommy Community. For leveraging
social to build a community, Jill takes the
prize.

8. 6. Jessica Gottlieb
JessicaGottlieb.com
Jessica could best be described as an
activist mommy blogger. She focuses on
green living, works with the United
Nations, and says, “I will close up shop
before I promote frankenfood.” She lives
in LA and, unlike many, has been quite
successful in getting big sponsorships to
support her blogging efforts. An award-
winning blogger and a regular on the
conference speaking circuit, she is a
walking force of nature.
Jessica’s YouTube channel has 400K+
views. Her Klout score is one of the
highest among mommy bloggers. She
talks about how she embarrasses her
kids...and about automotive and travel
topics. Diverse, thoughtful, and with 20K+
Twitter followers, we will let Jessica
embarrass us anytime!

9. 7. Stacie Haight Connerty
The Divine Miss Mommy
Stacie does a great job blogging, being a
mom, and running her own PR/media
company. She focuses on product reviews
and giveaways at her site and is a true
social media darling. She hosts 65k+
Twitter followers and almost 6K Facebook
fans, and regularly speaks at events like
BlogHer and the Consumer Electronics
Show in Vegas.
Stacie’s knack for building community is
remarkable. She’s created networking
groups, toy websites, and more. She
credits her outreach efforts to the kindness
and generosity shown her through the
heart surgery birth ordeal of her third child.
She bridges social online and offline
beautifully. We applaud Stacie as
someone truly devoted to giving back.

10. 8. Wendy Piersall
Mom Blogging for Dummies
Wendy has literally written the book on
mom blogging. An advocate in promoting
mom bloggers, she has been listed by
Nielsen as one of the 16 most influential
mom bloggers (2009). She runs a new
media company as well as the Woo! Jr.
Kids Activities Blog Network, attracting
over 400,000 monthly visitors.
Wendy hosts over 40K Twitter followers.
Like most of the mom bloggers featured
here, it’s her strongest outlet. Even though
she only has 2K friends on a personal
Facebook profile, we’re inclined to give her
a pass. After all, she’s been kind of busy
building and selling a company, then
building some new ones. For
entrepreneurship mom style, we nominate
Wendy.

11. 9. Shauna James Ahern
Gluten Free Girl
Not all mom bloggers focus only on the
family. According to Technorati, only “13%
of mom bloggers are primarily writing
about parenting, and another 9% are
focused on family updates; moms are
also blogging about many other topics.”
Meet one of those other moms.
Shauna has an impressive social
footprint, with 120k+ on Twitter. Her bio
states, “I write about food, cooking, and
ridiculous moments that make me glad to
be alive. Everything but the gluten.” Over
30K friends on her Facebook fan page
and a Flickr account full of amazing food
pictures makes our mouths water. If you
want to see how a mom blogger who
writes about food does it, follow Shauna.

12. 10. Tsh Oxenreider
Simple Mom
We’ll round out our collection with
another who focuses on non-family-
oriented matters. Tsh is an organized-
life designer and expert. In her own
words, her blog SimpleMom.net is “a
productivity blog for home managers.
It’s like Zen Habits wearing an apron.”
She also spearheads a whole blog
network, Simple Living Media. She
published her first book, Organized
Simplicity, last year.
Another truly impressive social media
footprint from a world-traveling mom:
Tsh hosts Facebook friends of 16K+
and Twitter followers of nearly 70K. Her
motto? “When Mom is doing well, the
whole family thrives.” For a simpler,
more productive life, we suggest you
read Tsh.

Let’s Celebrate These Stars of the She-conomy!
Women comprise only 5% of the overall blogging community, but they tend to be
strong users of social media—and they control the purse strings of women
consumers, a sector that wields considerable purchasing power. In fact, over the
next decade, women will control two-third of consumer wealth in the United
States, as reported recently by Fleishman-Hillard’s Claire Behar. The upshot:
This is a niche you might want to take a bit more notice of next time you create a
marketing campaign.
You can check out a cool collection of statistics about mom bloggers here at
Wendy Piersall’s site (one of the featured mom bloggers in this piece). You can
also see the very detailed stats available from Technorati here. Give these
women a peek. We believe you’ll like what you find.
