One way to think about the intelligent edge is the interface between the cloud and the real world. It is the layer of the mobile devices that we use to access the data in the cloud. Currently not all of those devices are connected. You can’t always easily get the stuff off of your Surface and on to your phone. Or the stuff off of your tablet and on to your Xbox. Or the stuff off of your smart fridge and into your smart car. However, if we ensure that all of those devices are interconnected we can leverage AI everywhere and have true serverless computing power to make it easier and quicker access to that data and a more seamless experience. So by pushing boundaries with the applications and experiences they build — through innovations like agents, bots and new conversational interfaces — developers can drive the evolution of these platforms– that’s what makes this feedback loop that Satya talks about and that pushes our products and services forward.

- The truth is, there is no standard definition for the Internet of Things. If you have heard or read about IoT, chances are you’ve come across a number of different perspectives Despite how complex IoT seems, it essentially comes down to four areas: Physical “things” such as line of business assets, including industry devices or sensors (e.g. Windows 10 IoT, Azure IoT Device & Gateway SDK). Those “things” have connectivity to the internet, to each other, and to people (e.g. Azure IoT Suite to enable the full scenario). Microsoft enables connectivity to any kind of device that our customers needs. And we can bring amazing experiences to the edge through our gateway SDK, and through intelligent devices with Windows 10 IoT. Those “things” collect and communicate and control data—this may include information gathered from the environment or inputted by users (Azure Data Lake, SQL Server 2016) And then there are analytics performed on that data to provide insights (Cortana Intelligence Suite, SQL Server 2016, R-Server) Lastly, insights does not impact bottom line unless we take action (Dynamics 365, Microsoft Flow) Transition: So how do you apply these components or building blocks to your business transformation journey Talking Points Sources of info While the rate of decrease in the cost per transistor inevitably slows from the 30% per year historical rate as the total accumulated volume becomes very large, nature (or at the very least, history) highlights that the cost reduction must still be achieved but possibly by different means, such as carbon nanotubes, bioelectronics, quantum tunneling, spintronics or something else entirely. Source The amount of data on the planet is set to grow 10-fold in the next six years to 2020 from around 4.4 zettabytes to 44ZB. That’s according to IDC’s annual Digital Universe study, which also predicted that, by 2020, the amount of information produced by machines, the so-called internet of things, will account for about 10% of data on earth. Source McKinsey’s report says 1.5 million more managers and analysts with analytical skills will be required by 2018. The UK alone is forecast to create 56,000 big data jobs a year until 2020, according to a report by employers’ network Tech Partnership and business analytics firm SAS. - Microsoft has built a portfolio that supports the needs of all customers, and enables everyone to access the benefits of digital transformation. Microsoft IoT Central is a fully managed SaaS solution that is best used when you need to get started quickly with minimal IoT experience. For businesses that are pursuing speed over customization, SaaS models could be the perfect fit for their IoT implementation needs. Organizations with fewer device models, more predictable scenarios, and limited IoT/IT capabilities can now reap the benefits of IoT through a SaaS approach. We are leading the industry in providing a mature SaaS solution that meets common IoT implementation pain points. Those businesses that previously lacked the time, money, and expertise to develop connected products can now get started quickly with Microsoft IoT Central. Azure IoT Suite is a customizable PaaS solution that is best used when you need a lot of control over your IoT solution. Businesses that are implementing IoT for connected operations, or those with very particular customization requirements for their connected products, can have the control they need with Azure IoT Suite. Organizations with a large number of devices or device models, and manufacturers seeking connected factory solutions are examples of companies that can create highly customizable IoT solutions tailored to their complex needs. In addition, Azure IoT Edge provides organization with the capacity to do local processing. When combined with a PaaS or SaaS solution, edge processing can offer faster calculations and reduce the cost of data sent to the cloud.
- Not only are companies going through digital transformation but cities are too. The city of Louvain-La-Neuve here in Belgium has as target to become a sustainable city by 2050. For that, they are leveraging the power of IoT. In order to become carbon neutral and to cut their greenhouse gas emissions by 40% they partnered up with a Belgian ISV called Opinum. Opinum produces Opisense, an energy monitoring platform that controls buildings using cloud and mobile technologies. How does it work ? It works through a highly secure web portal built on the Microsoft Azure cloud platform, and uses SQL Azure and Power BI for data analyses. Opisense aggregates data from smart meters in buildings and from building automation systems, and transmits the data through the cloud to the portal where the client accesses. It then uses the data captured from the IoT devices to automatically populate reports in Excel, which the client can adapt to their specific needs. Results: Once the pilot project was complete, Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve expanded the solution to include additional buildings, and the city worked with Opinum on the creation of a mobile app called Opisense Index. Energy engineers can use the app when they need to collect energy readings manually—typically for small buildings where a complex monitoring solution isn’t necessary. The city has reduced energy use in five municipal buildings by 25 to 31 percent which is equal to the normal annual power usage of 66 houses. - Sodexo provides integrated facilities management services to more than 75 million people To streamline operations and boost efficiency Sodexo replaced a series of standalone and siloed computing systems with Azure and Dynamics 365 ensuring that Sodexo personnel and clients have secure, anytime, anywhere access to information and real-time decision-making support The digital transformation has allowed Sodexo to accelerate its ‘mutualisation’ business model where clients sign up for a broader range of integrated services, and Sodexo and the client share in the resulting efficiency dividend Mutualisation’s success depends on Sodexo management having streamlined access to accurate and granular data that allows services to be optimised rapidly to meet changing client needs or expectations Sodexo has also deployed Azure machine learning, predictive analytics via Power BI and Azure’s IoT Hub. Sodexo’s first IoT initiative was using sensors to automate and streamline water treatment inspection, meaning instead of sending staff out to make routine checks, personnel are only deployed when an anomaly is identified or forecasted by predictive analytics, saving money and time Sodexo wants to automate as many routine tasks as possible – from water inspection to air conditioning servicing, or managing 300 buses and their drivers spread over an area the size of California. Efficiency gains unleashed by the initiative have already saved one of Sodexo’s clients tens of millions of dollars in the start-up phase, while Sodexo’s movement towards mutualisation – offering full management of all non-core business to clients – has allowed another to replace 600 separate contractors with a single integrated and highly efficient service from Sodexo. In Australia, Sodexo delivers integrated facilities management services to a wide range of enterprises, including some of the nation’s leading miners, as well as corporate, schools, offshore oil rigs, aged care facilities and prisons. In Western Australia alone Sodexo transports more than 6,000 workers to and from their work each day; over 18,000 meals are cooked and consumed daily; 16,000 rooms are serviced; and around 23,500 smoke detectors are managed and maintained. To streamline operations and boost efficiency Sodexo has replaced a series of standalone and siloed computing systems with Azure and Dynamics 365. The integrated cloud-based solution ensures that Sodexo personnel and clients have secure, anytime, anywhere access to information and real-time decision-making support. Paul Bean, Sodexo’s Mining Asia Pacific CEO, is the lead architect and champion for the digital transformation project, which is delivering genuine enterprise transparency and flexible, scalable access to a completely integrated information platform. Working with Microsoft gold partner, Velrada, the solution has been deployed in just six months and is intended as the blueprint for a global transformation initiative underway at Sodexo. Internationally, the company provides services to more than 75 million people, in multiple sectors across 84 countries, and employs more than 425,000 staff. The digital transformation has also allowed Sodexo to accelerate the rollout of its ‘mutualisation’ business model. Under this model, clients sign up for a broader range of integrated services, and Sodexo and the client share in the resulting efficiency dividend. Mutualisation’s success, however, depends on Sodexo management having streamlined access to accurate and granular data that allows services to be optimised rapidly to meet changing client needs or expectations. Dominic Nolan, General Manager of Delivery says that to build equivalent functionality from standalone solutions – which was Sodexo’s original global plan – would have required integration of 20 to 30 different systems, and injected immense complexity and brought significant cost. Hookham said that to build the new platform that way would have taken at least two and a half years instead of the six months that the Azure alternative required. At the same time, Sodexo benefits from Azure’s global reach, security, scale and resilience, which are essential to its global ambition. Dynamics 365 has initially been deployed to underpin Sodexo’s customer service and field services, and it forms the foundation for a secure cloud-based client portal for end-user self-service, feedback and status updates. Tight integration across Microsoft platforms, particularly Dynamics 365 and Power BI, ensures transparency and accuracy along with rich reporting tools to support Sodexo executives’ decision-making and service optimisation. Sodexo has also deployed Azure machine learning, predictive analytics via Power BI and Azure’s IoT Hub. Sodexo’s first IoT initiative has commenced introducing using sensors to automate and streamline water treatment inspection. According to Bean: “Many organisations work to traditional measures like cost of labour or the cost of raw materials. This system allows us to go deeper and understand where efficiencies can be delivered through integrating services more, or in some cases less. “The system is a component that enables those savings and efficiencies to be made – it’s not the only component, but it is an important component and it’s the difference to me from being able to make a 10 per cent saving and a 15 to 20 per cent saving for a client. “Information is king and if you haven’t got the empirical data then every decision you make can influence positive or negative cost results. “This gives us certainty – I talk in the business about which levers to pull. Well, the technology delivers a clearer understanding of the impact of change. We can analyse the financial impact on us and the client if we change a route or a schedule. “As the system matures and the data provides a richer output – then the efficiencies and opportunities for optimisation become stronger and pretty dynamic. When the client’s world changes, we are able to change with it and predict with reasonable certainty what the impact will be on them and us.”
