Brussels Environment developed a strategy from 2004-2015 to promote sustainable buildings in Brussels. The strategy aimed to (1) stimulate demand through financial incentives and exemplary projects, (2) improve knowledge and skills, and (3) improve supply through training and partnerships. This led to over 500,000 square meters of sustainable buildings constructed or renovated, including many passive houses. The strategy also grew the energy budget and agency staff. Going forward, Brussels Environment will focus on sustaining the market and ensuring quality through monitoring and skills development.

Energy: the energy concept must be near Zero Energy Buildings. Eco construction : measures are adopted in the concept that limit the impact of building on people and the environment in terms of water management, comfort and health, waste management, materials, etc. Profitability and reproducibility: the projects combine existing technologies and innovative solutions. The combination of the aforementioned is an ambitious project that remains technically and financially accessible for the Brussels market. Architectural quality and visibility: the visibility of the project, the location in the public space and the architectural quality (with attention paid to residential comfort, aesthetics and the well thought out use or materials) are also assessed.
