Hi I’m from Microsoft, and we’ll talk about our perspective on building a better cloud solutionWe’re all here because the cloud is a hot term in the industry. And when people think about Microsoft, they don’t typically think about the cloud
A bit about my self and my team, we are from the Open Soruce team at Microsoft, we work with OSSClous, and Open data initatives. Some of you that may know us, we work with local communities like (TikiWiki,ImpressCMS, PHPQuebec) and contirbhey everybody, I’m part of the open source team at Microsoft, Nik and Arun We put this presentation together this monringWe’re part of the Open Source Technology Centre, it’s purpose is to serve as a resource to Open Source communities and Microsoft product development teams to engage in cooperative and collaborative software development. TWe are responsible for contributing code to OSS Projects, like eclipse and apachefoundation, and working with local OSS Communities with interoperability Think of us as the Rebel alliance that works in the Empire to help create the next Xwing fighter jet.
Means different things to different people
All agree that whatever it is – it’s intended to reduce historical IT inefficiencies: waste of capacities when the infrastructure is sitting idle, or not having enough compute resources available when you’re running over-capacity --- like the fiscal year-end at a bank and everyone and their mom are running reports. And most of you will agree CLOUD is about….
… no longer having to worry about managing infrastructure
Or servers
Or storage
And instead having it in the cloud… to improve efficiencies – when the IT Infrastructure is agile enough to adjust to your business needs when the Capacities fluctuate over time…
Providing business agility
Resource agility
And help manage IT costs at the same time
That’s the GOAL --- driving down costs while improving agility --- …. But how do you GET THERE??? Many questions….
Which assets do you move into the cloud?
How do you go about “giving up” control, and do you actually give up control of your infrastructure?
How do you secure and mange your “cloud”
Pivots on 3 key pillars
NUMBER 1:Our approach is the freedom to access the technology you want, where and when you want it:On-premise – if you want to flow workloads into your own infrastructure.Or Off-premise – if you want to leverage assets outside your infrastructure.[build]Or BOTH ….It’s not an All or Nothing approach..So, you can complement your existing IT assets with Web based services, which bring us to the 2nd pillar of our vision:
NUMBER 2:…we want to be in the business of providing an helping org’s ensure the experience is consistent across all devices.PC, mobile, TV and cloud --- we call it “3 screens and the cloud”
Number 3:Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)With IaaS, you get on-demand computing andstorage to host, scale, and manage applications andServices using Microsoft's data centersPlatform as a Service (PaaS)The Windows Azure platform is a PaaS consistingof an operating system, a fully relational database, and consumable Web-based servicesSoftware as a Service (SaaS)Microsoft Online Services are subscription-based, on-demandapplications and hosted services, providing your end userswith a consistent experience across multiple devices.
and it’s not just a vision:
and it’s not just a vision:
and it’s not just a vision:
In fact, it’s been a long and steady march… since Hotmail and MSN was launched years ago…
And now we have Windows Azure – supporting all different platforms….
Windows Azure’s been used to help Host the Open government Data Initiative: a collection of software assets made available allowing government agencies and developers to share, access and interact with data via the Azure Services Platform.
