During the IoT Fundamentals session, we started by covering "What is IoT" and why should we use it. We learned some statistics about IoT devices, and also analysed Real World IoT solutions, explaining which technologies were used. Then we delved into Microsoft Azure and start exploring IoT related features, including IoT Hub, Device Twins, Device Simulation from Azure IoT Suite, and Time Series Insights.
During the Hands-on Lab, we setup an IoT Hub, provisioned an MxChip and also simulated devices to send Telemetry data back to IoT Hub. Finally we visualised all the data received from our devices (real and simulated) on Time Series Insights. Also we had a last minute addition regarding the Azure Sphere, which was launched in the same week as the Global Azure Bootcamp!

4. What is IoT?
⢠Internet of Things
⢠Two-way communication path between devices and cloud
⢠Connected devices which are internet capable
⢠Network of physical devices capable to connect to the internet
5. Why use IoT?
⢠Exploit things as managed resources
⢠Monitor the things
⢠Predict when they break
⢠Know when they are being used or not
7. IoT Stats
⢠In 2015, 15.4 billion connected devices
⢠By 2020, will grow to 30.7 billion devices
⢠By 2025, it will reach 75.4 billion
⢠By 2020, 75% of new cars have built-in IoT connectivity
⢠By 2021, Smart Clothing will reach 24.75 billion
8. Show me the Money
⢠In 2016, global spending was $737 billion
⢠By 2020, it will reach $1.29 trillion
⢠By 2030, IoT will add min. $10 trillion to worldwide GDP growth
⢠Barcelona saves $37 million/year by using Smart Lighting
14. IoT Connectivity Challenges
⢠Embedded systems with no human operator
⢠Can be in remote locations, with no physical access
⢠May have limited power and processing resources
⢠May have intermittent or slow network connectivity
15. Azure IoT Hub
⢠Fully managed service
⢠Enables secure & reliable communications to a variety of devices
⢠Capable of connecting millions of IoT Devices
⢠Capable of receiving high volumes of telemetry data
19. Device Twins
⢠JSON Documents that store device state information
⢠IoT Hub maintains a Device Twin for each device
⢠Represents the device itself showing the latest status
⢠Faster querying of devices using tags
22. Time Series Insights
⢠Store, visualise and query large amounts of time series data
⢠Ingest millions of sensor events per day, with one minute latency
⢠Query billions of events in seconds
⢠APIs allows embedding time series data into custom applications
24. Device Simulator
⢠Part of Azure IoT Suite
⢠Assists in the development and testing of an IoT solution
⢠Create a large number of simulated devices
⢠Custom sensors and behaviours
