3. FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK
Dear Members,
Winds of change are blowing across the country. The good part is that the dramatic changes witnessed over the past
few months will have a direct bearing in enhancing the Indo-US relations. In the month of May this year, Shri Narendra
Modi was sworn in as the Prime Minister of India. Soon after assuming office, the Hon’ble U.S. President invited our
Prime Minister for a visit to America. The change in guard was also duly acknowledged all over the world. But most
importantly I believe President Obama’s overture to our Prime Minister augurs well for widening the scope of bilateral
relations and fostering a higher level of bonding amongst the two biggest democracies.
Unfortunately this May we lost a very fine friend of India; Ms. Nancy Powell, the US Ambassador, who resigned. This
was indeed was great set back to the country and in particular IAS. Ms. Powell was very supportive to enhancing the
bilateral relation between US and India. It was our privilege to host Ms. Powell at the Orchid Hotel, last year. This event
was held under the aegis of Namaste America, IACC and IAS. Peter Haas, Consul General was also transferred in the
month of May and we are eagerly awaiting his successor in office.
From March till May we have been organizing diverse lectures and functions of wide ranging
topics including a cultural function which was held on 15.03.14. To keep pace with time we
also had an excellent lecture at the instance of the MD & CEO of BSE, who dwelt on the
Economic Outlook 2014. The rendition of the lecture on Civil War; “The Assassination of
Abraham Lincoln” by Mr. Richard Zielinski was engrossing, and held the members spell-
bound. It was as if one was actually visualizing the entire episode on a live telecast. The
IAS Founders day celebrated on 22nd April, 2014 was a very successful event and we were
extremely fortunate to have the presence of Ms. Deanna Abdeen, who was extremely
enthusiastic and made it a point to remain present throughout the function, till
dinner.
Once again my focus is on Educational issues and widening the scope of our
courses. My job is not yet complete and lot of work still needs to be done. I am
counting on the support of my team of E.C. members and the excellent back
office staff who have been working relentlessly to help us reach and achieve
our goals.
With warm regards and best wishes,
Sanjog Parab

Mr. Richard Zielinski on April

April 15, 1865 was a night that changed the trajectory of a nation forever. Considered by many to be the greatest of U.S.
Presidents, Abraham Lincoln’s untimely death had profound consequences that impacted his family, his colleagues and his
country long after his death. Amateur historian Richard Zielinski gave a brief on an hour by hour account of the three –
pronged attack designed to decapitate the U.S. Government at the end of the CivilWar.The assassin, JohnWilkes Booth, wasn’t
acting alone and this talk introduced the cast of characters and the different motivations that brought them all together on
this dark mission. The lecture included period photographs that showed Washington, DC as it was and offer insight into the
conflict that pitted families against each other. Shrouded in mystery, intrigue and conspiracy, the assassination of the 16th U.S.
President has fascinated historians for generations. The lecture was interesting and informative and was well attended by the
