This document discusses the process of creating a local heritage list for Marple, UK to recognize and protect important heritage assets not already designated. It began in 2009 in response to a development threat. Criteria for listing were established including architectural, historic, and group value. Over 370 buildings were surveyed based on public nominations, and 109 were recommended for the local list. Benefits include protection for local heritage and consideration in planning. Lessons highlighted the importance of community involvement. Next steps proposed expanding protections for some sites through additional designation as Assets of Community Value.

consideration to it’s special character.

The Carver Theatre, Church Lane.
Fine, stone built Georgian Building of Local
significance as a community theatre. Inclusion on
the local list will act to promote this building that is
important to the local people of Marple.

This is a good example of a villa style
property set within a large plot.
Asymmetrical in design with gables
and bay windows and hooded mould
details.

Aquaduct House, located on the banks of
the Peak Forrest Canal
Named on Bryant’s map of 1831 as Watch
House.
‘L’ shaped plan house of handmade brick
and interesting double arch detail
surrounding window of upper floor gable.
Visible historic link with the development of
Marple’s industrial heritage, the Canal
network and Samuel Oldknow.

Albert Schools, Church Lane
Albert Schools were built in 1868, as a
congregational Sunday School at the instigation
of Thomas Carver of Hollins Mill, later became a
full time day school.
