How It Works/Key Features/Components
Virtual Managed Services supports highly secure, cloud-based solutions for the automated delivery of business
services. It delivers these services easily, cost effectively, and on demand for an exceptional user experience.
The Virtual Managed Services solution portfolio includes a rich suite of virtual network functions (VNFs) for
advanced services orchestration, service assurance, VNF lifecycle management, and dynamic virtual forwarding
and control. The result is automated and secure on-demand delivery of customizable network services for your
customers from an open, multitenant virtual private cloud environment.
Virtual Managed Services supports bidirectional REST APIs for multivendor physical and virtual elements and
management and orchestration tools, and integrates smoothly into your operational systems platforms (OSS/BSS).
It uses emerging virtualization and software-defined networking technologies, including BGP-EVPN, VXLAN,
NETCONF, YANG, OpenStack, and service function chaining, to create the openness and flexibility needed to
easily add VNFs from any vendor and dynamically customize cloud based services across your infrastructure.
With Virtual Managed Services, you can create a catalog of secure, customizable business and application
offerings and offer them to your business customers through a self-service management portal. Each virtual
managed service, such as firewall, load balancer, and wide-area acceleration, is deployed on demand and runs on
standard servers in your data center, at the point-of-presence, or at the customer's location. Virtual Managed
Services service-based orchestration, assurance, and self-management modules automate the startup of virtual
machines, activation of VNFs, and dynamic creation of the specific service function chain. This approach supports
customizable service profiles and steers traffic to your customers’ locations. Virtual Managed Services also
automates monitoring of services and their underlying components for an outstanding customer experience.
The Virtual Managed Services portfolio lets you deliver a rich set of secure, cloud-based network services with
prepackaged software capabilities over any access technology. Virtual Managed Services makes it easy for you to
deploy, manage, and sell new premium cloud managed services, helping you reduce your OpEx and accelerate
your time to revenue.
The Virtual Managed Services portfolio offers multiple customizable, secure, cloud-based business services,
including:
● Cisco Cloud VPN services for secure business connectivity and routing (VPN) for site-to-site, remote
access, and Internet gateway applications
● Cisco Cloud MPLS Security services, including firewall, next-generation IPS, and web and email security
service delivered over your existing MPLS VPN connectivity
● Cisco Cloud Intelligent WAN (IWAN) services for secure connectivity over flexible transport options, using
hybrid WAN (MPLS or Internet) with DMVPN overlay; it supports intelligent path control based on policies,
application visibility and control, and applications and web security with strong encryption
● Cisco Cloud Security services, including open, modular delivery of hosted firewall, NAT, intrusion protection,
content filtering, and web and email security applications that your customers can access through any WAN
connectivity to your data center interconnect (DCI) infrastructure
Serve your customers better with prepackaged software solutions for VPN/WAN connectivity and security
applications, customized and managed through a self-service portal. The end result is a simpler and better
customer experience and lower costs to meet your service-level agreements.

Flexible Deployment Models for Virtual Managed Services
Software function packages play a central role in the ability of the Evolved Services Platform to transform service
provider business models. In today’s environments, service deployments often require a complex mix of hardware,
management tools, and business processes that can delay the deployment of new services by months.
The Virtual Managed Services software platform and customizable service solutions can be deployed as flexible
software packages, as fully integrated solutions (or PODs), as individual software elements, in a subscription-
based, pay-as-you-go platform, or in a network-as-a-service model. Cisco Cloud VPN, Cloud MPLS, Cloud IWAN,
and Cloud Security services may be deployed as predefined software function service-level packages (Figure 3).
Your customers can turn up their services in minutes and scale them elastically as their business needs dictate.

Capitalize on Network Function Virtualization
NFV is essential for new business models and cloud-based service offerings. As a leading member of the
European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), we are helping to shape a standards-based approach
for NFV. The goal of NFV is to take network functions, normally built into hardware, and implement them in
software on standardized computing platforms.
Cisco’s VNFs extend across all technology domains. Our open architecture automates services orchestration and
management across a multivendor physical and virtual infrastructure (NFVI) to help operators deploy cloud-based
virtual services that customers can order and activate in minutes.
Expand Your Business While Reducing Investment Risk
With Virtual Managed Services, you can deliver the service capabilities that enterprise and small and midsized
customers need, and capture more of the managed services market, projected to be US$110 billion in 2019
2
.
Deployed in minutes and easily scalable, the Virtual Managed Services solution combines software and optional
hardware to help you automate a new class of carrier cloud services.

Business Customer Use Cases - VMS Service-Level Packages
Cloud VPN or Cloud MPLS Services
Deploy Cloud VPN or Cloud MPLS with Cisco Virtual Managed Services:
● Through the self-service portal, your customer creates, orders, and activates a Cloud VPN service offering
from the active service catalog.
● You automatically ship the required CPE hardware to be installed and connected.
● After your customer receives and connects the CPE, it is automatically provisioned via a secure connection
from the cloud.
● The network service orchestration engine automatically brings up the required VNFs based on the business
service profiles and steers the traffic between the multivendor physical and virtual network infrastructure
(NFVI) to the customer’s locations.
● The secure Cloud VPN or Cloud MPLS service capabilities are automatically activated and connected to the
customer’s locations. The Virtual Managed Services platform software notifies the user through their self-
service portal.

Cloud Intelligent WAN
Deploy Cloud IWAN with Cisco Virtual Managed Services:
● Your customer accesses the self-service user portal to create, order, and activate a Cloud IWAN service
offering from the active service catalog.
● The network service orchestration engine automatically brings up the required VNFs based on the business
service profiles and applications intent. It then steers the traffic securely between the physical and virtual
network infrastructure to the customer’s premises through MPLS VPN and broadband Internet connectivity.
● The Cloud IWAN application capabilities are automatically activated and connected to the customer’s
locations. The Virtual Managed Services platform software notifies the user through their self-service portal.
