Cisco goes big into small cells
1. Cisco Goes Big Into Small Cells
Posted by krosenth Feb 28, 2012
At Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today, Cisco introduced the industry's first carrier-grade, end-to-
end Wi-Fi infrastructure to incorporate Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA)-approved Next Generation
Hotspot (NGH) technology, providing mobile users with "simple, seamless, secure" access across
multiple heterogeneous access networks.
Cisco's Service Provider Wi-Fi Solution is designed to help operators address capacity constraints from
spectrum limitations; scale coverage effectively; deliver seamless experiences across varying networks;
save on capital and operational costs, and manage the explosion in mobile traffic, devices and new
services.
Following the announcement, executives from a number of major service providers joined Cisco CEO
John Chambers to discuss how they've partnered with Cisco to deliver innovative mobile services with a
new generation of intelligent "small cell" solutions, including Cisco femtocells and access points.
One other customer made a video appearance today -- executives from BT and Cisco released a video on
London's growing mobile broadband network, which includes thousands of Wi-Fi hotspots powered by
Cisco's SP Wi-Fi solution, and the impact it has on the city's people and economy.
Today's announcement solidifies Cisco's leadership position in the small cell market. With over 12
million small cell access points in service today, the majority of which can now be upgraded to support
NGH, Cisco has the most experience delivering the widest range of Wi-Fi solutions available.
With deployments ranging from in-flight Wi-Fi to retail hotspots to stadium and large venue coverage,
Cisco's small cell story is getting bigger every day.
