conferment of their degree, the University

relationship with the University but the start of a

The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences
is large and comprehensive with nine component
schools: Chemical Engineering and Analytical
Science; Chemistry; Computer Science; Earth,
Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences;
Electrical and Electronic Engineering; Materials;
Mathematics; Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil
Engineering; and Physics and Astronomy.
Together they offer a diverse portfolio of research
and teaching of the highest quality.
Many of the major advances of the 20th century
began here, including the work by Rutherford
leading to the splitting of the atom and the
development of the world's first modern
computer. Today, research activities remain at the
cutting-edge and the Faculty now generates
around £75 million in research funding a year.
The quality, breadth and volume of research
activity at the Faculty of Engineering and Physical
Sciences is unrivalled. There are more than 70
specialist research centres and groups at the
Faculty, each undertaking pioneering research
into areas ranging from nuclear decommissioning
and nanotechnology to artificial intelligence
and aerospace.
Research is at the heart of The University of
Manchester's Faculty of Engineering and Physical
Sciences. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise
revealed outstanding results, with all of our
departments demonstrating international or
national excellence.
The Faculty of Humanities is the largest of the
University’s four Faculties, with a world leading
reputation in research that spans academic areas
as diverse as the arts, international development,
modern languages, education, law, the social
sciences, education, business and management.
With a total income of around £190 million per
annum, around 18,000, students and some 1000
academic staff, it is equivalent to a medium-sized
university in the UK.
Major activities include the Centre for New
Writing, the Institute for Social Change, the
Brooks World Poverty Institute, Humanitarian
and Conflict Response Institute, the Manchester
Institute for Innovation Research, the Research
Institute for Cosmopolitan Cultures, the Centre
for Chinese Studies, the Institute for
Development Policy and Management, the
Centre for Equity in Education and the
Sustainable Consumption Institute.
In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise,
Humanities was behind only Oxford and
Cambridge in the number of world-leading staff
returned, classified as 4*. Of its activity, 22% was
classed as world leading and a further 40% as
internationally excellent.

The Faculty of Life Sciences is one of the largest
and most successful unified research and
teaching organisations of its kind in Europe.
With more than 1,000 people involved in
research, 1,500 undergraduate students and an
annual budget in excess of £100 million, the
Faculty provides a highly interactive research and
teaching environment where all barriers to
collaboration have been removed.
As such, the Faculty is able to conduct the
highest quality research while maintaining an
extensive range of undergraduate and graduate
programmes, as well as vocational training.
The Faculty was ranked third in the country by
quality alone in the two Units evaluated in the
2008 Research Assessment Exercise.When these
results were aggregated, it came second only to
Cambridge – and ahead of Oxford - in terms of
research power (Grade Point Average x number
of staff).
The Faculty's research encompasses the entire
spread of life sciences from the molecule to the
cell to the organism, spanning all fields of
biology from environmental studies to cancer
biology, from neuroscience to post-genomics, and
from structural biology to organ transplantation.
Rapid advances in molecular biology, structural
biology, genomics and bioinformatics, will ensure
that the life sciences will continue to dominate
scientific discoveries in the 21st century.
The Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences has a
long and proud history of innovative teaching and
groundbreaking research, and is one of the largest
faculties of clinical and health sciences in Europe.
The Faculty has five Schools – Medicine, Dentistry,
Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences,
Psychological Sciences, and Nursing, Midwifery
and Social Work – with strong interdisciplinary
links with other Schools and Faculties across the
University, including Life Sciences, Engineering and
Physical Sciences, Economic and Social Sciences,
and Education.
The School of Medicine traces its past to the first
medical school established in England outside
London, while the School of Nursing was the first
British school to offer a degree in the subject;
similarly, Manchester was the first university to
award degrees in Pharmacy.
The Faculty’s performance in the 2008 Research
Assessment Exercise (RAE) reflects its strength
across an entire range of biomedical and clinical
research areas from laboratory-based
investigations through to studies of the impact of
discoveries on the health of the population.
There is a strong organisational capability for
undertaking cross-faculty teaching and research
activity in partnership with the public sector and
industry. For example, in conjunction with four
teaching hospitals, more than 300 GP practices
and 25 district hospitals, the Faculty trains in
excess of 350 doctors each year. Similarly, in
partnership with the Department of Health, it
provides continuing professional development
training for all 18,500 community pharmacists in
England.
Furthermore, teaching and research is spread over
a wide area with major links to Central
Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation
Trust, the Christie NHS Foundation Trust, the
Paterson Institute for Cancer Research, Salford
Royal NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospital of
South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust, and
Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust.

The 2012 Alumni Association Award
Outstanding Alumnus is
Paul McCreesh
Over the past thirty years Paul McCreesh has established himself at the
highest levels of classical music in both the UK and overseas.
After graduating from Manchester with a Mus.B. degree in 1981, he spent
his early years as a music teacher in Leicestershire, performing as a musician
in his spare time with the choral and instrumental ensemble he founded at
university - Gabrieli Consort and Players.
However, the pull of performance proved too hard to resist. He quit
teaching to dedicate himself to music full-time. Combining his passion for
music of all types with an instinctive commercial awareness, Paul
transformed Gabrieli from part-time side-project to world-renowned
interpreters of great choral and instrumental repertoire, from the renaissance
to the present day. The group still tours world-wide and has made many
award-winning recordings.
Along the way, Paul has earned a reputation as one of the industry’s most
innovative and dynamic artistic directors and conductors. He regularly works
with orchestras and choirs across the globe, covering a wide range of music.
Recent successes include the Budapest Festival, Spanish National, Danish
National, Bergen Philharmonic, St Paul Chamber, and further afield the
Hong Kong Philharmonic and Sydney Symphony orchestras.
From 2006 to 2012, he was the artistic director of the Wratislava Cantans
Festival in Poland, one of Eastern Europe’s most prestigious cultural events,
and in September 2012 he was appointed principal conductor and artistic
adviser of the Gulbenkian Orchestra from the 2013/2014 season.
Paul is particularly passionate about working with young musicians and
broadening access to classical music. He works regularly with youth
orchestras around the world and has an outgoing outreach relationship with
Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester.

Outstanding Alumnus is
Dr Duncan Casson
Dr Duncan Casson is one of the UK’s most respected developers of biological
medicines. A native of Denton – and named after Manchester United’s famous
‘Busby babe’ Duncan Edwards - Duncan moved to Plymouth with his family
when he was nine. He returned to Manchester nine years later as student,
graduating in 1980 with an honours degree in biochemistry.
Following a doctorate in microbiology and biochemistry at Birmingham
University, Duncan spent three years as a researcher in biochemical
engineering. He quickly realised, however, that his real passion was not in
research itself, but in turning research into applications that improved lives.
He therefore left academia and over the next 15 years developed his career
at two of the most respected names in international biochemistry –
Genzyme Corporation and Cambridge Antibody Technology – developing
innovative new products that enhanced the quality of life for people all over
the world.
Perhaps his biggest success, however, is his most recent one. In 2005
Duncan set up a small biotech company - PanGenetics UK - to develop
therapeutic antibodies targeting Crohns disease and chronic pain.
Within five years he had taken PanGenetics from start-up to one of the
most talked-about names in biochemistry, having successfully developed a
new therapeutic antibody to ease the plight of millions of sufferers of
chronic pain.
After considerable international interest, in 2010 PanGenetics was sold to
American biotech giant Abbott Labs for US$190 million.
Since the sale, Duncan has been advising a number of biotech companies
on developing new therapeutic biological products. Most recently, he was
appointed Chief Development Officer of a rapidly growing biotechnology
company near Cambridge.

Sarah Storey OBE
Sarah Storey is Great Britain’s most decorated female Paralympian in history
having won 11 Gold, 8 Silver and 3 Bronze medals in 6 Paralympic Games.
Sarah is one of the most versatile athletes in the world having won World and
Paralympic Gold medals in both swimming and cycling and across 11 different
events (6 in the pool and 5 on a bike).
In London 2012, she topped the medal table for the British Team with
4 Gold Medals from 4 events, including an impressive World Record in her
first event, the C5 Women’s 3000m Individual Pursuit.
Sarah is still based in South Manchester where she grew up. She
regularly trains in Cheshire and the Peak District as well as at the
Manchester Velodrome.
