To store and analyze those always fast growing pile of data we have to go new ways. The Scale-Up approach starts to break apart. Partitioning data and parallelize processing and analyzing are the new way.

Hey guys, lemme tell ya a story. Once upon a time, we’re talking about the year 2001, a few people had an amazing idea. They were thinking about something that would change the world. It would make the world easy and give programmers almost unlimited power! It was simply referred to as JSR 107, one of the least things to change in the upcoming future. But those pals were way ahead of their time and nothing really happend. So time passed by and by and by and over the years it was buried in the deep catacombs of the JCP. Eventually, in 2011, two brave knights took on the fight and worked themselves through all the pathlessness, to finalize it in 2014. Lads you know what I’m talking about, they called it the “Java Caching API” or in short “JCache”. Yes you heard me, a Java standard for Caching!

Flink Forward San Francisco 2022. A particular feature in our system relies on a streaming 90-minute trailing window of 1-minute samples - implemented as a lookaside cache - to speed up a particular query, allowing our customers to rapidly see an overview of their estate. Across our entire customer base, there is a substantial amount of data flowing into this cache - ~1,000,000 entries/second, with the entire cache requiring ~600GB of RAM. The current implementation is simplistic but expensive. In this talk I describe a replacement implementation as a stateful streaming Flink application leveraging Queryable State. This Flink application reduces the net cost by ~90%. In this session, the implementation is described in detail, including windowing considerations, a sliding-window state buffer that avoids the sliding window replication penalty, and a comparison of queryable state and Redis queries. The talk concludes with a frank discussion of when this distinctive approach is, and is not, appropriate. by Ron Crocker

This presentation will cover why we prefer Apache Pulsar over other streaming solutions. Given the streaming requirements of near-realtime action, scalability, high availability, disaster recovery, load balancing, low cost of operations, multi-tenancy and flexibility to fit a variety of use cases, we have run kafka, kinesis and NATS Jetstream across different use cases. And we chose Apache Pulsar as our platform of choice for cloud-native messaging. This talk presents the operational challenges we have faced running Pulsar for over 4 years and how Pulsar fit into different use cases given its multi-tenancy and configurability. We will also talk about how we have aced these challenges to stick to pulsar and even moved application from other messaging solutions to Pulsar. We will end with the challenges and learnings on moving to Pulsar from Kafka and Kinesis. After this session, you will learn more on common messaging requirements, why you should also choose Apache Pulsar as your platform of choice and how you can safely transition to Pulsar if you have been running other messaging solutions.

For the last two decades, the amount of data we store, process, and analyze is ever growing. The last decade shows a higher focus on immediate feedback loop data pipeline, using technologies such as Complex Event Processing (CEP), Stream Processing, and Change Data Capture (CDC). Services such as Kafka or NATS are to be found in almost every new system (at least to some extent). To build a data pipeline, the number of technologies, frameworks, and platforms are endless. Getting the initial grasp of it all is much harder than expected, but together we can tackle it!

No farm looks like the other and water distribution, next to other elements, has grown generically. A little bit like the good old legacy systems we all love. To keep up with containers being started and stopped for version upgrades, scaling up and down or to mitigate failure situations, monitoring needs to automate all the tasks to react to infrastructure changes and find issues before users being impacted. People today expect “Oops-Less Operation”, or do you want your bank to be offline?

Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery, Continuous Monitoring! These days CI and CD are commonly used mechanics to achieve fast turn-around times for high-demand applications. Microservices architectures and highly dynamic envrionments (based on Kubernetes, Docker, …), however, come with a whole different set of problems. Systems, that not only appear and disappear dynamically (e.g. autoscaling), but most commonly tend to be written using multiple different programming languages, are hard to monitor from the point of view that matters: User Requests and User Experience. but the answer is simple; Continuous Monitoring (CM). Let's build a polyglot microservices infrastructure. A way to monitor and trace multi-service requests will be demonstrated using Instana’s automatic discovery system.

The way from monolithic to micro service architectures can hard. Overall micro services are not the all holy grail to just solve all your issues. You need to be aware that you need the right developers and the right toolset. Oh and not to forget, moving state to authorization systems doesn't mean your application is really stateless :) Anyhow micro services are a great architecture and this deck is a short introduction on why we need to change our application architectures and what pitfalls you you have when introducing the idea of micro services.

You never heard of sun.misc.Unsafe? You may be using it without realising it. Are you using Spring or Hibernate? 90% of todays applications use sun.misc.Unsafe directly or indirectly. Unsafe is meant to be an API internal to the JVM but since it turned out to be extremely powerful, more and more frameworks have used it. This talk will show different usecases of sun.misc.Unsafe and other inherently unsafe possibilities in Java. Some are commonly used in production environments like fast Serialization, Offheap or to build lock-free algorithms, some not suitable for production but fun to play with breaking the rules of what you can do in Java. After the talk you’ll understand what is possible and what might help you, but not to forget, this talk is given with a big warning: Don’t Try That At Home!

We’re going to tell you all about the Flutterwave Scandal in a way that’s easy to get. Keep reading, because we’re going to share the whole story with you. The company Flutterwave is headquartered in San Francisco, California, United States. In 2016, Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, Olugbenga Agboola, and Adeleke Adekoya established Flutterwave. It offers a payment infrastructure to international merchants and payment service providers throughout Africa. The company operates in various African countries including Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, South Africa, and others. They focus on digital payments, helping businesses accept and process payments on various channels like the web, mobile, ATM, and POS. Recently, they’ve been in the news due to allegations of misconduct within the company, which has affected their reputation and value. Flutterwave is an essential player in the African fintech landscape, aiming to drive growth for banks and businesses through digital payment solutions. The Flutterwave scandal involves allegations of misconduct and inappropriate behaviour towards female employees by the company’s co-founder and CEO, Olugbenga Agboola. Reports have surfaced from both current and former employees about bullying, intimidation, and sexual harassment at work. The allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards female employees at Flutterwave, specifically involving the CEO Olugbenga Agboola, were brought to public attention in April 2022.This was when Clara Wanjiku Odero, an ex-employee and current CEO of Credrails, published a Medium post and a series of tweets on April 4, 2022, accusing Flutterwave and Agboola of bullying. These allegations were part of a broader range of misconduct claims that surfaced around the same time The reasons behind the scandal are rooted in accusations of unethical behavior within the company. The allegations suggest a workplace culture that allowed for misconduct and failed to protect employees from harassment and intimidation. Specifically, the Flutterwave scandal refers to the series of events where the CEO was accused of engaging in improper conduct with female colleagues. This led to a broader investigation into the company’s practices and raised serious concerns about the fintech’s corporate governance. The scandal had significant repercussions, including a drop in the company’s stock price and a loss of trust among customers and partners. The trust that customers and investors had in Flutterwave was greatly damaged. People started to doubt the company’s integrity and whether their money and personal information were safe. Market Impact The scandal shook the entire fintech market. Flutterwave’s competitors saw this as an opportunity and started to attract customers who were leaving Flutterwave.

In her presentation, Hedden describes the components of an enterprise knowledge graph and provides further insight into the semantic layer – or knowledge model – component, which includes an ontology and controlled vocabularies, such as taxonomies, for controlled metadata. While data experts tend to focus on the graph database components (RDF triple store or a label property graph), Hedden emphasizes they should not overlook the importance of the semantic layer.

This our Twelfth semiannual report on the global Cryptocurrency mining industry. Bitcoin is the world’s largest special purpose supercomputer. And it is globally decentralized. Millions of nodes all run the same open-source code to secure the Bitcoin network, create value, and put new transactions onto the distributed ledger. The latest Top500 list has just been announced at the ISC 2024 conference in Hamburg, and once again the Frontier supercomputer with 1.2 Exaflops peak performance is number one on the list. If assigned to SHA-256 hashing, Frontier would provide only the equivalent hash rate of about three cabinets of the latest high-end Bitcoin mining systems, costing less than 0.1% of Frontier’s cost. Michael Saylor, Chairman of MicroStrategy, has pointed out that GPUs are two orders of magnitude slower than the 5-nanometer technology of custom ASICs used for Bitcoin mining today. He makes the point that the Bitcoin network is unassailable by all of the hyperscale computing resources combined in AWS, Google, and Microsoft Azure cloud data centers today.
