SHELTER HAVEN BEGINS “KNOW YOUR NIEGHBOR” PROGRAM
Introducing Westchester Citizens to Their Forgotten Neighbors
NEW ROCHELLE, NY Shelter Haven has begun their new program “Know Your Neighbor” in
an effort to raise awareness of the homeless and people who rely on food pantries.
The nonprofit which manages shelters throughout Westchester, began the program to
ignite public concern of the shrinking support of the homeless and food pantries. Hosting talks,
holding benefit concerts, and revitalizing the website are just some of the ways “Know Your
Neighbor” is raising public awareness and support.
The program is estimated to raise awareness and support by 50%. The shelters and food
pantries are in desperate need. The food pantries have had to turn away record numbers of needy
families and shelters hit capacity almost every night. The situation is nothing short of crisis,
hence the need to develop “Know Your Neighbor.”

Creating the program “Know Your Neighbor” was a six month effort. The program has
been backed by big names in Westchester such as; Robert Amler of New York Medical College,
Iona College President Dr. Joseph Nyre and Mercy College President Kimberly Cline.
“In bad economies philanthropies are usually the first to feel the hurt. The shelters of
Westchester are no exception to this sad reality. It is more important than ever to be informed
and supportive” said Dr. Nyre.
Know Your Neighbor is having its first big event, “Hello Neighbor” October 13, 2012.
This event is an educational fundraiser with a carnival theme. Using the Iona College campus in
New Rochelle, Shelter Haven is hosting the event with carnival rides, games, and shows.
Westchester elementary school children can compete in a talent competition while the winners of
an essay winners for the middle and high school will be announced. Throughout the carnival
will be information booths where donation can be made. Proceeds will go toward stocking
Westchester food panties and developing homeless shelters.
