RGB laser projectors provide benefits over lamp-based projectors but also produce speckle when used with silver screens. Speckle can be reduced by using a white screen, mechanically vibrating the screen, or increasing wavelength diversification between lasers. The Christie CP42LH projector features Enhanced Wavelength Diversification technology that significantly reduces speckle through a diverse combination of modular laser systems while allowing the continued use of existing silver screens and passive 3D systems.

TECHBRIEF
screen instead of a silver screen. Although a
white screen is preferred when using a color
separation 3D system, the ability to use a passive
polarization-based 3D system is lost. The second
option is to mechanically vibrate the screen. In
general, this is least preferred by exhibitors due
to installation cost and, more importantly, the
difficulty in maintaining a vibration system over
the life of a typical cinema projection screen. The
third method to reduce speckle is to increase
wavelength diversification in the system by
adding more lasers with varying wavelengths.
This countermeasure is typically employed by all
laser projector manufacturers but is often limited
by the availability, efficiency and cost of laser
devices in various color ranges.
Despite various claims from projector
manufacturers, there are no other secret or
proprietary methods that have been proven to be
sufficiently effective for speckle reduction.

Diversification (EWD)
Using Christieâs diverse combination of modular
laser systems, Christie customers can significantly
reduce the impact of speckle on silver screens.
The Christie CP42LH RGB laser projection system
featuring EWD finally gives exhibitors a legitimate
option beyond 6P laser systems that allows the
continued use of their existing silver screens and
passive 3D systems. Not only does this reduce
costs and time associated with a projection
system retrofit, it also allows exhibitors to use
low-cost 3D polarization glasses, which translates
to significant cost savings.

RGB laser illumination
Offering higher brightness, a wider color
gamut, higher contrast, improved dynamic
range and longer operational life compared
to lamp-based systems, RGB laser is the ideal
illumination platform for the next generation of
high-performance projectors. Despite the many
benefits of laser illumination, all manufacturers
also face the challenge of reducing speckle, which
is an unwanted effect synonymous with RGB laser
projection systems.
What causes speckle?
Laser light is inherently coherent. This means
that the laser light waves cover a very narrow
frequency range and are virtually locked together
in phase. When these coherent light waves hit
a rough surface, such as a projection screen,
the reflected waves interfere with each other
and create light with random intensity, which
manifests into the visual artifact called speckle.
The appearance of speckle is intensified when a
silver screen is used.

speckle. One is to employ a low-gain white
