Introduction
Knowing the “self” is not enough. Since “who you are” is partly
made up of your choices, you must also have the ability to choose
especially to be better “you”. In the school setting, your knowledge
of yourself should at least enable you to become a better student.

A good number of our growing years, is dedicated to studying in
school.
1-2 years in pre-school/ early childhood education;
6 years in elementary school;
4 years in junior high school;
2 years in senior high school; and
4 years in college/ depending on the chosen course.

Here comes graduation,
Only our studies end, but not our learning
Therefore, learning is a lifelong process.

METACOGNITION
Commonly defined as “thinking about thinking”. It is
the awareness of the scope and limitations of your
current knowledge and skills.
It is also to assess how far you already know about a
certain thing or skill.

Two Aspects of METACOGNITION
1. Self - Appraisal
2. Self - Management
- Your personal reflection on your knowledge and
capabilities
- What you have in planning and adapting to successfully
learn or accomplish a task.

1. Metacognitive Knowledge-
2. Metacognition Regulation-how you adjust your thinking
process to help you learn better.
a. Personal Variable – evaluation of strength and weaknesses
in learning.
b. Task Variable – what you know about the nature of the task
c. Strategy Variable – skills you already have in dealing with
certain tasks.

Skills to improve METACOGNITIVE Skills
1. Know your limits – evaluate what you know and what you don’t
know.
2. Modify your approach – recognize what strategies is
inappropriate with the task, modify or change it.
4. Rehearsing – repeatedly doing what you have learned and
making interpretations or summary of the learning
experience.
3. Skimming – browse over the material and keep an eye with the
keywords, phrases and sentences.
5. Self –Test – focus not only of what you have learned but also on
how you learned it.

Four Types of METACOGNITIVE Learners
1. Tacit– unaware of their metacognitive processes although they
know the extent of their knowledge.
2. Aware – know some of their metacognitive strategies but do not
plan to use these techniques.
4. Reflective – reflect on their thinking while using the strategies
and adapt metacognitive skills depending on their situation.
3. Strategic – strategize and plan their course of action toward a
learning experience.

1. Listening
The process of using the sense of hearing, in order for the person
to know what is happening around him.

3 types of Listeners
1. Passive – listens without responding.
2. Active – listeners that absorbing information.
3. Competitive – listens and gives an opinion to the newly acquired
information .

2. Speaking
The process of conveying a message to a receiver verbally, or a
process where the listener applies to him/herself the information
he/she have heard.

3. Reading
It is the process of analyzing symbols for you to understand the
message conveyed by the sender.

The Two Types of Motivation
1. Intrinsic – comes from within. (intrapersonal motivation)
2. Extrinsic – arises from outside of the individual.
(interpersonal motivation)

Example: you want to write eligibly in your notebook so that you
can clearly understand your lesson.

instructor gives merit to clean notes.
