1. Assignment 1 Unit 4 Task 2
Requirements Of Working To a Brief
Brief Structuring
A Brief is a goal or task to work towards and complete. A brief can be given to you by employers and
can take any length of time to complete. The brief can be conveyed via meetings and in written form
but there are different variations of briefs.
Contractual-
A Contractual brief is a brief given to the employees by the client or employer. It outlines what is
required of the employees and also states what the employees get in return, E.g. Pay, sick pay,
experience and so on. A contractual brief is very comprehensive and will cover all areas including
liabilities and insurance.
An example of a contractual brief would be the production of a video
game. They usually employee people with very specific job roles (Writer,
storyboarding, concept artist, graphic artist) and keep them on board for a
certain amount of years or until the game has finished production.
Certain game franchises, like the Halo games, will keep on the production
team across each game. They might hire new people for different jobs but
the some people might have a contract which has asked them to stay until
the end of the franchise.
Negotiated-
This type of brief is where two or more parties come together with separate ideas and have to come
to a suitable agreement. Both parties would have to take each other’s ideas into consideration and
reach a conclusion where both ideas combine, so both parties will be satisfied with the outcome.
An example of a negotiated brief could be a co-illation government, but then again, maybe not.
Formal-
A formal brief is very specific and precise and will give outline and what is expected of the employee.
They will often give a number of goals that need to be achieved. The brief is not long winded and will
not involve any unnecessary information. This style of brief is used when dealing with large
companies rather than individuals. Formal briefs are very relaxed and well worded meaning the
client/company can create the product, quickly and effectively, without getting confused with
another objective.
Informal-
An in formal brief is almost the polar opposite of a Formal brief. The brief can be subject to change
over time allowing the final product to adapt. The brief is not specifically given to one individual, but
to the wide range of employee’s it might not be very specific and a little confusing to follow.
Commission-
A commissioned brief is where a company or business to produce something for them. For an
2. example the BBC could ask Aardamn to make a 15 minute animation for them because they like
Aardmans previous work.
The commissions could be simply because BBC is a fan of Aardamn. Another example is artists and
comic artists are sometimes asked for special requests.
Tender-
A tender brief is almost an open invitation to anyone who believes they can complete what has been
asked. A way for a brief to be distributed could be over the internet or through the council. For
example a Hotel could want to be re-decorated so they send out a Tender Brief to the council who
will distribute it further to a handful of commercial decorators.
