2. BASIC FACTS
• Disease – COVID-19
• Virus – SARS-Cov-2
• Total Number of Active Cases in World = 6 Crores
• Total Number of Active Cases in India = 18 Lakhs
• Total Number of Persons vaccinated worldwide = 88 Crores
• Total Number of Persons vaccinated in India = 12 Crores
• Early development of vaccine
3. TYPES OF VACCINES
• Whole Virus Vaccines –
– Complete virus is introduced in body but in weakened form
• Subunit Vaccines –
– Involves only some fragments of virus not complete virus
• Viral Vector Vaccines –
– Introduce genetic code for antigen into harmless virus which then
introduced in human body
• Nucleic Acid Vaccines –
– Insert genetic code directly into cells - like mRNA or DNA vaccines
4. EFFICACY VS EFFECTIVENESS
• Efficacy Rate - degree by which infection is reduced in a vaccinated
group compared with an unvaccinated one - it measures disease
prevention by the vaccine among trial participants
• Efficacy of a vaccine indicates its success in a randomised controlled trial
• Effectiveness measures how the vaccine works in a real-world setting
• Real-world effectiveness is usually less than in a controlled setting
• It takes many years for science to determine what an effective vaccine is
5. VACCINES IN INDIA
• Covishield –
– By AstraZeneca & University
of Oxford
– Viral vector vaccine
– Efficacy rate : 79%
– 01 Jan 2021
• Covaxin –
– By Bharat Biotech in association
with ICMR & NIV
– Inactivated virus vaccine
– Efficacy rate : 81%
– India’s 1st indigenous vaccine
– 01 Jan 2021
• Sputnik-V –
– Developed in Russia
– Viral vector vaccine
– Efficacy rate : 92%
– 12 April 2021
• On 13 April 2021, GOI amended its strategy under which Covid-19 vaccines that have
received emergency approval elsewhere in the world would be fast tracked in India
6. INDIA’S VACCINATION DRIVE
• National Vaccination Drive began on 16 Jan 2021 across 3,006
vaccination centres
• Each vaccination centre will offer either Covishield or Covaxin, but not
both
• Total Number of Persons vaccinated in India = 12 Crores
• Different Phases –
– Phase 1 – All Health line worker and frontline worker
– Phase II – Citizens above 60 years of age + age b/w 45-60 years having
comorbidities
7. INDIA’S VACCINATION DRIVE
• India celebrated Teeka Utsav (Vaccine Festival) from 11-14 April 2021 to
promote vaccination drive
• % of full vaccinated population = 0.90%
• Top 3 States –
– Lakshadweep – 3.58%
– Ladakh – 2.68%
– Tripura – 2.38%
• Bottom 3 States –
– Tamil Nadu – 0.47%
– Bihar – 0.48%
– Punjab – 0.50%
