Wikipedia defines internet research as "the practice of using the
Internet, especially the World Wide Web, for research."
And research is simply "looking up something".
Becoming an internet researcher, to me, is one of the simplest and
least expensive businesses to start online. As an internet researcher,
your job is to provide your clients with the most relevant, factual
information available on their topic, niche, market, etc.

Use the appropriate research tools
The tools you use to perform Internet research may vary depending on your topic or
assignment.
Use major search engines such as Google, Bing, or Yahoo to perform your research; as these
tools will provide you with access to nearly all published websites made available to the public.
These search engines will also display and rank websites for you according to topic relevancy
based on the keywords you entered into the search engine.
Use keywords relevant to the topic you are researching
Use specific keyword phrases to locate the most relevant information. For example, if you are
looking for information on how to perform an oil change on a 2006 Honda Accord, enter
specific keywords such as "oil change instructions 2006 Honda Accord" instead of a basic
phrase such as "perform an oil change," which may bring back thousands of results for
websites that feature oil changes on motorcycles, buses, boats, and all other automobiles.
Use alternate words or keyword phrases to locate additional research sources. For example, if
you are performing research on foreign movies, use the words "films" or "shows" in place of
movies to find additional sources that may provide you with more information on your
research topic.

Review several pages of search results for valid information
In most cases, search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo will rank search results
based on specific algorithms, such as website popularity.
Look beyond the first page of search results to find information for your research. In some
cases, you may be able to find websites with helpful information beyond the first 5 pages
of search results.
Determine that the website is a credible and reliable source
If you are gathering facts for your research, you will want to verify that the information is
being provided by professionals or certified experts in that particular field or subject.
Read the "About Us" section of a website to learn more about the authors or organization
publishing the information.
Review the extension of the website in the address bar to determine the source. If the
website ends in ".edu," ".gov," or ".org," the information on the website is overseen by a
school, government entity, or non-profit organization, respectively, and in most cases, is
accurate.

Use current information for your Internet research
Some information is time-sensitive, and the sources you may find and use may be
outdated or inaccurate. For example, if you are performing research on popular computer
software, use information from an article published within the last few weeks or months,
instead of an article published from several years ago.
Review each website for grammatical errors and broken links
If the website is credible and reliable, grammar and spelling should be accurate and all
links should take you to the appropriate landing page. Websites with numerous
grammatical errors and broken links may be copying their information from another
source or may not be legitimate
Cite or list all the Internet sources used in your research
This process is helpful if you need to revisit a website to include more information in your
research, or if you need to provide your client with a list of sources used to compile your
information.
Copy or document the exact website link you used to access and provide information for
your Internet research.
12. How do I market my internetHow do I market my internet
research business?research business?
The easiest and least expensive way to start marketing your business is to start a
blog. Start writing about you, your journey to starting your business. Offer research
tips & how-tos. Share research strategies. Or ways to help organize all the
information after the research is done. You want to show your expertise by offering
relevant and useful content for free.
Offer a free small report or checklist showing them how to do one step of the
process in exchange for their name and email address. You will start to build a list.
The power of your business is in your list. This will be the list of people you build a
relationship with and market to over time.
Set up a website. You can start internet research career without a website but to
build it as a lucrative business, you need a website.
13. The rates researchers charge vary. It depends on your experience. As well as what
industry you are in. And the type of clients you serve. Researchers can start
charging anywhere from $15-$30 per hour. But this amount can go up to $100 or
more per hour. These higher rates are common for "Independent Information
Professionals". You can get more information about this niche from the Association
of Independent Information Professionals.
I hope this information has answered your burning question of "How to become an
Internet Research Specialist" This is not meant to be an all inclusive guide. But it
should give you enough information to decide if this is a good online business idea
for you to research further.

Do you want to start an online business? Do you know what type of business
you want to start? Do you know what market you will cater to? Are you going
to specialize in a particular niche? Is there a demand for what you want to
offer?
I know this is a lot of questions. But they are essential questions that must be
answered before you start on your online business journey. Therefore, once
you have made the decision to start an online business, your next step is to
begin your research. Regardless of whether you know what you want to do or
not, conducting online research is your first step to success. Don't make the
mistakes many other new business owners make, thinking that doing a little
keyword research is enough. There are 5 types of research you should conduct
to ensure your online business success. We will start this 5 part series with
Market Research. And every day for the next 4 days, the remaining 4 types
will be discussed.

Market Research
Market research consist of collecting, maintaining and organizing information about
your market. Your market is the broad area your business products and services
caters to. You want to evaluate and analyze the information gathered to help
you make strategic decisions regarding your business and how you serve your
customers.
Often new online business owners are not sure what type of business they want to
start. If this is you, you would start with something general that your are good at or
passionate about. This usually starts with something very broad. Let's say you are
passionate about website design. This is a very broad topic. There are many aspects
of website design you can focus on. Not to mention most broad markets may have
bigger companies that will be hard to compete with.

Niche Research
A niche is a smaller specialized segment of your broad market. While conducting your
broad market research, you should find that various narrow segments resonate with
you more. Maybe you have specialized training in a certain aspect of your market. Or
you have experience working with a particular industry. You may have noticed an
unmet need while conducting your market research.
Online business owners can increase their chance of success when they can specialize
in a particular niche. It can be difficult to compete with larger more established
companies in your market. Depending on the niche you choose, you may find that you
have very little competition. And may be able to dominate it quickly.
In conducting your niche research, your main focus should be finding a smaller
segment. What are you good at or don't mind the learning curve. Then as you research
your niche look for what people are saying they want but no one else may be offering
it. Can you develop a product or service to meet this need?

Keyword Research
Keywords are the words or phrases people type into search engines, like
Google, to locate information. Keyword research is when you locate the
specific keywords or keyword phrases your potential customers are using to
find information about your niche. When done correctly, keyword research
can be very informative. Using keyword research, you can determine how
often people are searching for specific terms each day. As well as estimates of
how many other sites are offering information on these same topics. In other
words, how much competition you have in your niche.
There are various free and fee-based keyword tools that can be used to
automate this process. Google Keyword Tool or Wordtraker Free Keyword
Tool are too commonly used free keywords tools.

Ideal Client Research
You know your market. You have narrowed down your niche. You have a list of keywords
that potential clients are searching for. Next you need to determine, who are you going to sell
to. Who is your ideal client? Who will jump at the opportunity to buy the product or service
you are offering? They are just dying to get it. Wondering where you have been all their life.
It is essential for the success of your online business to conduct research to find out what is it
that your ideal client wants. What are their pain points in your niche? What keeps them
up at night. What problems are they having in this area? Can you produce a product or
service that can solve these problems?
You want the words on your site to speak your ideal client's language. Find out where they
hang out at. Which social media sites do they frequent? What forums do they participate in?
Subscribe to newsletters and blogs they might read. You may even want to join memberships
or associations they are a part of. You should be everywhere they are. So you can lean in
and listen to what your ideal clients are asking for.

Competitor Research
Once you have all the information about your niche, keywords, and ideal client, it's time to
research your competition. Find some of the top key players in your niche that also serve your ideal
client. Why is this important? Because you can pay attention to what they are doing for your ideal
client. What type of products and services are they offering to them. What's working for them and
what's not? Better yet, where have they dropped the ball in your niche that you can quickly fill?
You may want to subscribe to their newsletters and/or blogs. Or you can purchase some of their
products to get a better understanding of what they're offering to your ideal client. There are tools
available that allow you to "spy" on your competition. Spyfu.com is the site I use for this. You can
find out what keywords your competitors are using to drive traffic to their site, thru both organic
and paid search. And use these same keywords for your site.
Alexa.com also allows you to research your competition. If you enter their domain name, you can
find out lots of information about their site. Examples of information Alexa.com can provide is an
overview of their traffic stats, search analytics and audience snapshots. As well as high impact
search queries.
