partendo dall'Inghilterra d i inizio diciottesimo secolo, con "The Spectator";
pubblicazione "Combat".
parere, quelle righe riassumono l'importanza e l'essenza d i ogni periodico.
5. Historical context:
At the beginning of 18 century, in England, wealth come progressively more from merchants'
th
capital, creating a powerful and prosperous business class. England's major manufactured export
product during this period is cloth, which, along with other manufactured goods, is shipped to the
American colonies in exchange for an increasingly valuable commodity, tobacco.
The society is changing after the English Civil War, it tries to reach a balance between morality and
respectability.
There are two distinctive periods in the literary styles and tastes of the 18th century. Thefirsthalf of
the century is ruled by the great satirists, the second half by the marked development and
popularization of the new form of literature, the novel. During the first half of the century essay
periodicals become popular reading. People read to improve their Reason, and the "Reasoned" form
of the essay appealed to them. The most famous of the essay periodicals are the British publications
"The Tatler" (1709-1711) and "The Spectator" (1711-1712, 1714), by Sir Richard Steele and
Joseph Addison; and the followers: "The Rambler" (1750-1752) and "Theldler" (1758-1760),
founded by writer Samuel Johnson.

6. The Spectator
"The Spectator" was a periodical published in London by the essayists Sir Richard Steeie and
Joseph Addison from March the first, 1711, to December the sixth, 1712 (appearing daily), and
subsequently revived by Addison in 1714, appearing three times weekly for six months.
Each 'paper', or 'number', was approximately 2,500 words long, and the originai run consisted of
555 numbers.
"The Spectator" adopted a fictional method of presentation
through a "Spectator Club", whose imaginary members
praised the authors' own ideas about society.
These "members" included representatives of Commerce,
the Army, the Town and of the country gentry.
The papers were ostensibly written by Mr. Spectator, an
"observer" of the London scene.
The conversations that "The Spectator" reported were often
imagined to take place in coffeehouses, which was also
where many copies of the publication were distributed and
read.
[Because of its fictional framework, "The Spectator" is
sometimes said to have heralded the rise of the English
novel in the 18* century].

The aim of this periodical was to turnish an entertaining Library.
and historically invaluable picture of 18 -century London
th
life, both high and low.
The new social ideas that the two essayists fostered were moderation, self-control and good-taste.
Another function was to pròvide readers with educated, topical talking points, and advice in how to
carry on conversations and social interactions in a polite manner. In keeping with the values of
Enlightenment philosophers of their time.
With regard to that, Addison wrote in "The Spectator" No. 10, on Monday the twelfth, march 1711:
«I shall be ambitious to have it said that l have brought philosophy out of the closets and
libraries, schools and colleges, to dwell in clubs and assemblies, at tea-tables and
coffeehouses.».
The authors of "The Spectator" also promoted family, marriage, and courtesy.
Addison and Steeie (and their contributors) were determined to inform and improve the minds and
manners of this growing new class of men; they also wanted «to enliven morality with wit and to
temper wit with morality» that is to say: to blend the morality of the puritans with the wit of the
aristocracy.
7. The audience to whom "The Spectator" was addressed was: «everyone that considers the world
as a theatre, and desires to form a righi judgment of those who are the actors on it».
These readers carne from many positions in society, but the paper catered principally to the interests
of England's emerging middle class.
By mixing politics, serious essays, and sly satire this periodical was written in a way to allow more
readership because its language was in a repetitive, simple form for the growing literate population.
To sum up, "The spectator" was an extremely innovative publication and very influential too; along
with "The Tatler", they inaugurated the tradition of the daily periodical whose subject was not
news, but literature and manners.

8. Historischen Kontext:

12. L a Voce
Croce e Giovanni Gentile fondatori dell'idealismo italiano), politici liberali (Giovanni Amendola)
L A O U f ^jjKwSS^^ ~"

dall'altro i letterati.
INTORNO A L CUBISMO

moralisme.» .
