Unit 2 Communication Skills for Creative Media Production Task 3
Self-evaluation
I decided to produce a presentation and research report on the possibility of
Cineworld showing all their film releases online, for a monthly or individual fee, so
that people can watch the latest films at home. I wanted to choose a media idea that
I would use as part of my daily life and I thought that if I would use it, then other
people would want to use it too. I wanted to use Cineworld as they are a big,
multinational company that has year on year growth and they are willing to try new
things. On their company website in their strategy section they stated ‘they are
looking for opportunities to grow their company.’ Therefore I thought they would be a
good candidate for my idea.
Whilst conducting this research on Wednesday 15th June and Friday 17th June, I
learnt to manage my time well because I discovered an overwhelming amount of
research on films and the internet but most of it was not relevant to my idea. I found
it time consuming to scan and skim read all the information on the internet, in
magazines and in newspapers in order to find any relevant information that would
help or strengthen my idea. I also learnt that there were not many competitors in this
field except Netflix, Amazon Prime, Sky Movies and NOW TV. I found it useful to
break down my idea in to small sections or topics and then research each area for
each topic. I learnt how to think step by step in my idea and analyse each step until I
had enough information to form an opinion on the topic. For example the target
audience was not just a matter of thinking ‘whoever attends the cinema would watch
online; so that is everyone’. I had to break this down even further to gain accurate
research. I wanted to discover how many people attend their cinemas for the last two
years, how much revenue they receive from drink and food because if it is a large
amount then it is unlikely to be affected by having films online. I also wanted to
discover how many people watch programmes or films online with their competitors.
I then wanted to break down this information further to, how often did they watch
online, what ages, gender and what social economic background are they from.
Overall, a lot of different areas had to be researched for my idea and a lot of
information was available. I needed a two days in order to sort through all the
research to prioritise and collate the useful and relevant information.
I do believe that Cineworld would be interested in my idea as it brings them up-to-
date in today’s customer market place and it would not cost a great deal for them to
implement. They would only need to add a drop down menu and create another
webpage. All the existing film pictures currently on their website could be used again
for the online section. Staff currently monitoring their website, could be incorporated
to monitor the online webpage too at no extra cost to Cineworld. There is no
competitor that offers recent films available to watch at home. Because millions of
people in the UK still go to the cinema, this proves that people want to watch up to
date films. The monthly cost of £16.90 for unlimited online viewings, matches their
unlimited cinema attendance. Having a joint unlimited online and cinema attendance
for £25, is in my opinion, a realistic price and for the customer the unlimited online
card works out to be £3.90 per week to view the latest films. (£16.90 x 12/52 =£3.90)
On Friday 17th June, I used spell check, proof read all my tasks looking for spelling
mistakes, punctuation, correct grammar, structured my research and slides to make
sense and I used my thesaurus. Once I had finished checking my work, I placed it to
one side for a while and then returned later in order to re-check my work. This way I
can look at my work in a fresh light and I have had time to digest the information on
what I read the first time in order to establish if I am happy with what I have
completed or whether I want to add or remove information. I prefer to do this
because if I have been working on a project after a while I tend to switch off from
what I am reading. Whereas if I have a break, then I am much more focused and
have had time to think the second time around.
I completed my PowerPoint presentation on Sunday 19th June and believe that it is
at a good standard. I don’t think I could improve the quality or content of my
PowerPoint and am happy with the overall result. I had a few people observe me
when I completed my pitch on Monday 20th June. Ideally I would have liked to have
had a lot more people in order to receive feedback from different people’s
viewpoints.
Feedback
I received feedback from three different people on my completed tasks and my pitch
on Monday 20th June 2016.
Jess stated that she liked my idea and though it was good. She would use it herself
as she attends the cinema every week and thought it handy to have the option to
watch “cinema films at home”. She thought I had completed lots of relevant research
and she understood my idea and how it would develop from an idea into reality. She
liked my PowerPoint presentation and thought it was professionally made and I
spoke clearly to her throughout my pitch.
Laura also liked my idea and said that she liked the way people could buy individual
films as well as watch unlimited films for a month. She thought the price was about
right. She buys new films at about one or two a month, so having this option would
benefit her and possibly save her from buying them from a shop. Laura also thought
that my research was in-depth and she thought my presentation was strong and
easy to understand. She liked the way I had put a ‘conclusion’ and ‘any questions’
slides in my presentation to remind her to ask any questions, if she wanted to.
James liked the way I had annotated my comments in red, as he said that they easily
stood out and made my research clear and easy to understand. He also liked that I
had used more than one source for my information, as he stated “most people use
the internet, they don’t think about using magazines or newspapers – people forget
about them. It’s good that you used them in your research.” He also liked the fact
that I had thought about where to place all my pictures and writing on my
presentation as he said “lots of people just put pictures anywhere and they
sometimes look out of place; just shoved on to a slide, but you have thought about it
– I like that, it makes it look better.”
Personally I thought that I produced a good idea and was surprised that not one
cinema company had already thought of starting this. I believe that I completed lots
of relevant research from lots of different sources to gain an unbiased view. I also
chose research over the last few years, so that I could build up a picture of whether
the industry was on the decline or about to have a growth spurt. I discovered that the
industry was growing year on year. I think that I covered each relevant topic for my
idea and produced a comprehensive report on my research to clarify what I
researched and why. I then completed a bibliography using the Harvard system to
give a detailed analysis of my sources. I thought my PowerPoint had the correct
amount of slides, pictures, writing and relevant content.
Two things spring to mind that I would change about this unit, if I had the time to
complete it again. Firstly, I would have liked to research cinema competitors to
understand the industry as a whole because some of those cinema audience may be
interested in watching films online. However, when the idea would be at the
advertising stage then those customers would be aware of the idea then and
hopefully switch from a competitor cinema to Cineworld. Secondly, I would have
liked to complete a survey or questionnaire on whether people liked my idea, if they
attend the cinema, and if so, how often. If they would use an online service, what
they thought a fair price would be and would they still attend the cinema. I can’t think
of any other negatives about this unit. Overall, I enjoyed thinking about a new idea
and planning and researching the idea from start to end.

I wanted to use Cineworld as they are a big, multinational company that has year on year growth and they are willing to try new things. On their company website in their strategy section they stated ‘they are looking for opportunities to grow their company.’ Therefore I thought they would be a good candidate for my idea. Whilst conducting this research on Wednesday 15th June and Friday 17th June, I learnt to manage my time well because I discovered an overwhelming amount of research on films and the internet but most of it was not relevant to my idea. I found it time consuming to scan and skim read all the information on the internet, in magazines and in newspapers in order to find any relevant information that would help or strengthen my idea. I also learnt that there were not many competitors in this field except Netflix, Amazon Prime, Sky Movies and NOW TV. I found it useful to break down my idea in to small sections or topics and then research each area for each topic. I learnt how to think step by step in my idea and analyse each step until I had enough information to form an opinion on the topic. For example the target audience was not just a matter of thinking ‘whoever attends the cinema would watch online; so that is everyone’. I had to break this down even further to gain accurate research. I wanted to discover how many people attend their cinemas for the last two years, how much revenue they receive from drink and food because if it is a large amount then it is unlikely to be affected by having films online. I also wanted to discover how many people watch programmes or films online with their competitors. I then wanted to break down this information further to, how often did they watch online, what ages, gender and what social economic background are they from. Overall, a lot of different areas had to be researched for my idea and a lot of
  • 2. information was available. I needed a two days in order to sort through all the research to prioritise and collate the useful and relevant information. I do believe that Cineworld would be interested in my idea as it brings them up-to- date in today’s customer market place and it would not cost a great deal for them to implement. They would only need to add a drop down menu and create another webpage. All the existing film pictures currently on their website could be used again for the online section. Staff currently monitoring their website, could be incorporated to monitor the online webpage too at no extra cost to Cineworld. There is no competitor that offers recent films available to watch at home. Because millions of people in the UK still go to the cinema, this proves that people want to watch up to date films. The monthly cost of £16.90 for unlimited online viewings, matches their unlimited cinema attendance. Having a joint unlimited online and cinema attendance for £25, is in my opinion, a realistic price and for the customer the unlimited online card works out to be £3.90 per week to view the latest films. (£16.90 x 12/52 =£3.90) On Friday 17th June, I used spell check, proof read all my tasks looking for spelling mistakes, punctuation, correct grammar, structured my research and slides to make sense and I used my thesaurus. Once I had finished checking my work, I placed it to one side for a while and then returned later in order to re-check my work. This way I can look at my work in a fresh light and I have had time to digest the information on what I read the first time in order to establish if I am happy with what I have completed or whether I want to add or remove information. I prefer to do this because if I have been working on a project after a while I tend to switch off from what I am reading. Whereas if I have a break, then I am much more focused and have had time to think the second time around. I completed my PowerPoint presentation on Sunday 19th June and believe that it is at a good standard. I don’t think I could improve the quality or content of my PowerPoint and am happy with the overall result. I had a few people observe me when I completed my pitch on Monday 20th June. Ideally I would have liked to have had a lot more people in order to receive feedback from different people’s viewpoints.
  • 3. Feedback I received feedback from three different people on my completed tasks and my pitch on Monday 20th June 2016. Jess stated that she liked my idea and though it was good. She would use it herself as she attends the cinema every week and thought it handy to have the option to watch “cinema films at home”. She thought I had completed lots of relevant research and she understood my idea and how it would develop from an idea into reality. She liked my PowerPoint presentation and thought it was professionally made and I spoke clearly to her throughout my pitch. Laura also liked my idea and said that she liked the way people could buy individual films as well as watch unlimited films for a month. She thought the price was about right. She buys new films at about one or two a month, so having this option would benefit her and possibly save her from buying them from a shop. Laura also thought that my research was in-depth and she thought my presentation was strong and easy to understand. She liked the way I had put a ‘conclusion’ and ‘any questions’ slides in my presentation to remind her to ask any questions, if she wanted to. James liked the way I had annotated my comments in red, as he said that they easily stood out and made my research clear and easy to understand. He also liked that I had used more than one source for my information, as he stated “most people use the internet, they don’t think about using magazines or newspapers – people forget about them. It’s good that you used them in your research.” He also liked the fact that I had thought about where to place all my pictures and writing on my presentation as he said “lots of people just put pictures anywhere and they sometimes look out of place; just shoved on to a slide, but you have thought about it – I like that, it makes it look better.” Personally I thought that I produced a good idea and was surprised that not one cinema company had already thought of starting this. I believe that I completed lots of relevant research from lots of different sources to gain an unbiased view. I also
  • 4. chose research over the last few years, so that I could build up a picture of whether the industry was on the decline or about to have a growth spurt. I discovered that the industry was growing year on year. I think that I covered each relevant topic for my idea and produced a comprehensive report on my research to clarify what I researched and why. I then completed a bibliography using the Harvard system to give a detailed analysis of my sources. I thought my PowerPoint had the correct amount of slides, pictures, writing and relevant content. Two things spring to mind that I would change about this unit, if I had the time to complete it again. Firstly, I would have liked to research cinema competitors to understand the industry as a whole because some of those cinema audience may be interested in watching films online. However, when the idea would be at the advertising stage then those customers would be aware of the idea then and hopefully switch from a competitor cinema to Cineworld. Secondly, I would have liked to complete a survey or questionnaire on whether people liked my idea, if they attend the cinema, and if so, how often. If they would use an online service, what they thought a fair price would be and would they still attend the cinema. I can’t think of any other negatives about this unit. Overall, I enjoyed thinking about a new idea and planning and researching the idea from start to end.
