Graduate: If you're a student in your final year at university or a recent graduate, you can apply to
join a Graduate Program as part of a full-time or part-time position. These graduate programs typically
involve entry level roles where you gain experience in a particular business group or service line.
Vacation: If you're at university, vacation work is paid work experience for approximately two to
12 weeks during the summer holidays and can potentially lead to further employment opportunities.
Cadet: If you're in Year 12 or in your first year of university, a Cadetship Program enables you to gain
practical and commercial experience whilst completing your studies. The Cadetship Program structure
varies between employers.
Undergraduate: If you're at university, you can apply for part-time or casual work in an organisation
at any stage throughout your degree. As an undergraduate you would generally work between one and
four days per week, depending on your study contact hours.
International students: If you're an international student at a university, you can apply
for permanent, part-time or casual work in an organisation. Please refer to an organisation’s
specific eligibility requirements.

Large corporates
Large corporations range from companies in financial services
and commerce to Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG).
Some examples include Sony Music, Vodafone, eBay, Qantas
and Rio Tinto.
The Big 4
Deloitte, Ernst Young, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers
(PwC), are commonly referred to as the Big 4. These global
accounting firms offer local and international opportunities.
These are the four largest global professional services firms,
and offer services including Audit, Assurance, Tax, Consulting,
Advisory, Actuarial, Corporate Finance and Legal. They also
manage the vast majority of audits for publicly listed companies
and many private companies.
Mid-tier accounting organisations
(typically six or more partners)
Mid-tier accounting practices are large but not as big as the
Big 4. They tend to have national and local offices, and work
with partners in other countries to deliver services to their
clients who have overseas business interests. These firms offer
the chance to specialise in a variety of industry areas.
Small to medium accounting organisations
(typically one-five partners)
These accounting practices require you to have general
knowledge across a broad range of business areas. Due
to their size, they offer great opportunities for promotion
and the ability to work more closely with clients at an early
stage of your career. Some also run ‘boutique’ operations,
providing highly specialised advice to their clients.
Public sector/Government
Public sector careers provide a unique opportunity to work
alongside key policy-makers, legislators and budget writers,
with opportunities spanning local, state and federal levels such
as the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and the Australian
Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC).
Not-for-profit
Refers to an organisation that is not operating for the profit or
gain of its individual members. Examples include charitable
organisations such as Oxfam, UNICEF and the RSPCA. These
also include professional associations such as the Institute of
Chartered Accountants Australia.

You’ll find many of the larger employers apply a four-step recruitment
process for their Graduate Programs.
Step 1: The initial online application
Once you have found a position you want to apply for, you will need
to fill in an online application. Generally, this application will require
you to:
a) Provide your academic results
b) Outline your employment history and/or relevant work experience
c) Address key selection criteria such as:
−− Demonstrate the skills and competencies expected in the role
−− Why you have chosen to apply for the role.
d) Plus, you may need to complete:
−− Behavioural-based questions, which aim to assess your skills
in areas such as communication and time management
−− Psychometric testing, which some companies use to assess
your personality, along with your literacy and numeracy skills.
Step 2: Phone conversation with a recruiter
If your online application is successful, the company’s recruiter
or human resources officer will generally call you to discuss your
application and the position in more detail. This is a great opportunity
to ask questions and learn more about the role.
Step 3: Face-to-face assessment
You’ll then move onto a face-to-face element, such as a group activity.
Here, you are often assessed on your:
• Problem-solving skills
• Teamwork abilities
• Leadership potential
• Communication and initiative traits.
This process may also have a technical component, such as a
business-based case study, or be as simple as attending a cocktail
party so your prospective employer can assess how well you interact
with staff.
Step 4: The face-to-face interview
This interview process could involve you being interviewed
by a panel of two or more people, including a senior manager
or partner from the organisation.
Whatever you do, always come prepared and be confident.
Be ready to:
• Talk about your skills and past experiences
• Promote your strengths and attributes
• Highlight what you know about the company
• Reinforce why you want to work with them
• Ask questions about the type of work you would be required to do.
From here, the company will determine if you are suitable for the role.
If you are successful, they will check your references and send you
a formal letter of offer.

How employers recruit
11. 11
It’s easy to be overlooked amid the flood of CVs employers receive.
Here are some strategies to consider that could help you gain a
potential employer’s attention.
Cultivate your digital brand
It’s important to maintain your brand both offline and online.
What you share on your Facebook page, in a YouTube video, or on
a blog all matter to potential employers. In fact, it’s likely a hiring
manager will at least Google you before an interview. So you need
to ensure that what is viewable to the public won’t reflect poorly on
you as a professional.
Set up your LinkedIn profile
A great way to build your online identity is by setting up your
professional profile on LinkedIn. Essentially it’s your online CV,
and helps you to network with others.
Joining our free student club, OneNetwork, will give you the
opportunity to access our LinkedIn group and Facebook page.
Here, you’ll be able to connect with potential employers, join
in on conversations and profile your professional experience.
Tailor your job applications
Tailor your CV and cover letter for every application. It’s well worth it
because the hiring manager can see at a glance your credentials and
why you should be considered for an interview.
Plus, adapting your CV for each job opportunity shows you’re taking
a thoughtful approach to your job search. Instead of hitting send
and deploying the same information time and again, you’re making the
effort to explain why you’re the best candidate for each specific role.
Follow up: before and after the interview
After you send out a CV, don’t play the waiting game if you want to
get noticed. Sending an email or calling to confirm your CV has been
received can help earn you a spot on a busy hiring manager’s radar.
After an interview, it also makes a good impression to send a thank
you email. Doing this re-emphasises your enthusiasm for the position
and your strengths.
How to stand out from the crowd

One of only a handful of indigenous Chartered Accountants in the
nation, Ellery has worked in Queensland for the past five years after
graduating from James Cook University with a Bachelor
of Commerce.
Aged 26, Ellery is already building an impressive client base in the
Townsville region, where he is the only indigenous employee among
about 200 employees in the local accounting firm, WHK.
Blackman, who grew up in Mt Isa, says working in a smaller regional
firm has allowed him to avoid the big city rat race and develop a more
personal relationship with a wide range of clients.
I see my clients around town and enjoy talking with them on
a personal level. I wouldn’t be able to do that if I had only large
corporate clients.
Blackman, who is treasurer of the newly-formed Townsville Regional
Indigenous Business Network, says indigenous businesses are growing
across Australia and it makes sense for indigenous accountants to play
a vital role in business, industry and indigenous communities.
His clients include registered Native Title body corporates and span
the cultural heritage, retail, medical and hospitality industries.
Working in a regional office means Chartered Accountants are exposed
to much more one-on-one client contact than if they worked in a bigger
city office.
You just don’t get the same opportunities in a bigger office as you do
when you work in a smaller regional office. Those opportunities only
arise much later in your career when you work in a big-city firm.

Since Chartered Accountant, Simone Taylor, joined the OrotonGroup in
2009 she has been helping steer the company’s finance function.
As the financial controller, the diversity of her role is phenomenal.
From early morning sales meetings, product reports and cashflow,
to rolling out a new Asia strategy and setting up new payroll and audit
structures, Simone enjoys a truly interesting career.
I’m working on new projects all the time, that’s what I like about the role.
Plus it’s about company announcements and looking into listing rules,
familiarising myself with reporting rules in Singapore, Hong Kong and
Malaysia, and looking at what we are doing over the next five years.
With 85-odd stores across Australia and Asia, OrotonGroup has long
been a shining light on the retail front. But a changing landscape and the
growth in online shopping, has called on Simone to help develop possible
strategies that will ensure continuing success and future growth.
Simone says part of her role includes exploring strategic options such as
acquisitions, partnerships, licence agreements and capital management.
Meanwhile, she has also played a key role in the company’s expansion
into Asia, and has enjoyed the support of her boss and CFO of
OrotonGroup, Kevin Fine CA. She believes Fine’s guidance, coupled
with a strong company culture, drives her personal contribution to the
OrotonGroup’s performance.
Looking ahead, Taylor foresees an eventual move into a CFO role that
represents the right mix of company culture and product mix. As with
Oroton, she sees any future role as continuing to add to the business.
I can’t be at a company where it’s just presenting a report at the end of
the month – it has to be a business partner role.
