MOOC Presentation
This presentation shall answer the following questions?
What are MOOCs?
How did they come about?
What are the different types of MOOCs?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of MOOcs?
Which Mooc am I interested in and why?
3. What are MOOCs?
In simple terms a MOOC is a:
Massive
Unlimited number of students
Open
Study any course, anywhere at any time
Online
No face to face or blended
Course
Learning subjects in a academic module.
6. xMoocs
Follows a more behaviourist approach based on certain
instructions.
Behaviourism: a theory of learning based upon the idea that all
behaviours are acquired through conditioning.
Can include using video presentations, short quizzes and testing.
Students intake some information, then hopefully engage in doing
something while getting a little bit of help from peer learners.
7. cMoocs
Based on a connectivism theory of learning with networks developed informally.
Connectivism is the thesis that knowledge is distributed across a network of connections, and
therefore that learning consists of the ability to construct and traverse those networks
They include discussion forums, allow people to bounce ideas around and discuss learning
together and one-on-one interaction and easy back-and-forth questioning.
cMOOCs emphasize connected, collaborative learning and the courses are built around a
group of like-minded ‘individuals’ who are relatively free from institutional constraints.
8. Advantages and disadvantages of
MOOCs?
Advantages
They are Free
Provide a solution to overcrowding
Create a dynamic archive
Are designed to ensure that students keep up
Bringing people together from all over the
world.
Disadvantages
Could lead to teachers becoming nothing more
than “glorified teaching assistants.
Will shrink faculties, eventually eliminating
them.
Makes it easier for students to drop out.
Intimacy of face-to-face communication is lost,
emotions often misunderstood.
9. What kind of MOOC am I
Interested in and why?
The mooc I am interested in is animal behavior and welfare. The reason why I am choosing
this kind of Mooc is because I have a huge interest in animals and wildlife. In addition to
that I have always been fascinated about animals and wildlife. Also because animal plays a
very important part in our ecosystem and environment as a whole. For this reason, I feel they
should be treated as equally important as human beings. And I also feel that we need to
understand their behavior and how they live.
