Oak Island is located off the shores of Nova Scotia, along Canada’s Atlantic Coast (Morgan, 2014). This small, seemingly normal island, holds a great deal of mystery that has captivated many men over the last 220 years.
The reason that Daniel found the depression to be odd is that standing over it was a tree whose branches had been cut. To him it looked like the tree was used as a pulley (Keyes, 1996). The unnatural scarring on the tree appeared to be from rope and tackle used to lower something into a shaft below ( Atherton, 2011).
Pirates were know to frequent areas near Oak Island. The islands wilderness regions provided natural resources to restock and repair their ships. It also had plenty of untouched areas to hide treasure. One well known pirate, Captain William Kidd, even admitted to burying some of his treasure in the area before being captured (Morgan, 2014).
The two other teens that Daniel got to help him were Anthony Vaughn and John Smith (Reese, 2014).
The boys encountered a layer of Flagstone 2 feet down and then they found layers of logs after 10, 20, and 30 feet (Keyes, 1996).
They boys returned with the Onslow Company to search the mysterious pit once again (Reese, 2014).
After digging through the logs every 10 feet, putty, charcoal, and coconut fibers, the team finally found a clue. The image above is a replica of the stone that was found ( Atherton, 2011).
When the team removed the logs at 90 feet, they unknowingly fell into a trap set buy the pits builder(s). They unplugged a waterway that had been dug from the pit to nearby Smith’s Cove. They tried to pump the water, but the cove kept refilling the hole (Keyes, 1996).
Roosevelt was part of the Old Gold Salvage and Wrecking Company in 1909. He spent his summer working for the company with the hopes of uncovering hidden treasure (Morgan, 2014).
Maynard Kaiser passed away on March 26th, 1897 when his ascension rope slipped from the pulling, causing him to fall (Morgan, 2014). The four men that died on August 17th, 1965 were part of the Restall Family’s team. While attempting to plug a hole and solve the flooding problem, Robert Restall Sr. passed out. His son and two other men went in to rescue him. Unfortunately the men were exposed to a gas, most likely from the generators. All four men, passed out and drowned (Keyes, 1996).
The History Channel started the show about a team of treasure hunters. The show is very recent, with its last episode airing in January 2015.
As stated before, the famous pirate Captain William Kidd along with other pirates were known to frequent the waters around the island. Also, some of the teams claim to have drilled through wood and then layers of metal pieces, they believe to be coins ( Keyes, 1996). Some even believe that Blackbeard could have buried his treasure on the island because he once stated that he buried his treasure “where none but Satan and myself can find it” (Morgan, 2014).
Many signs resembling Masonry have been found on the island, including markings on the oak near the pit and the heart shaped stone that was found (Atherton, 2011).
