Complementary colors are pairs of colors directly opposite each other on the color wheel, such as red and green or yellow and purple. Split complements are made up of a base color and the two colors on either side of its complement, for example orange with blue-green and blue-violet. These color combinations create visually appealing contrasts when used together.
