Change Champions & Associates presents:
A practical approach for health & welfare professionals
2. Health professionals regularly encounter people who are estranged from one
or more family members. Family estrangement is the physical distancing or loss
of affection between one or more members of a family due to conflict or
ongoing disagreement. Family members might stop all contact or they might
experience infrequent and uncomfortable contact. Regardless of its form, and
despite its origin, estrangement often results in significant grief responses as
well as decreased social functioning. While estrangement impacts families
across the lifecycle, there is some evidence that older people, or people
experiencing periods of crisis and those nearing the end of life might
experience an increased desire to reconcile with their estranged relative or at
least learn to live with the loss of the âfamily idealâ.
About this workshop
Family estrangement is a common occurrence, with current research suggesting
that it affects 1 in 10 people. However, its social undesirability means that many
estranged persons do not readily disclose their estrangement status or the
effect it is having on their functioning. Social and organisational policies
regularly assume the existence of extended family support. Hence, standard
assessments often overlook family members who are âno longer in touchâ and
the impact this absence has on the family system. Indeed, health professionals
often discover a person is estranged incidentally, or when an estranged relative
arrives at the personâs bedside towards the end of life. Despite this, the topic is
rarely covered in the professional curriculum and practitioners often feel unsure
about their role and purpose in relation to the estranged person (and often
their family). Work with estranged people can be intensely emotive and the
relational boundaries between client, family and professional can easily become
blurred due to personal values, ideas and beliefs about family estrangement.
This experiential workshop draws on the facilitatorâs research and knowledge as
well as the participantâs professional experiences to develop effective responses
for work with specific populations of estranged persons, which are appropriate
to the organisational context.
