You don't need to start scaling using a framework. Actually it's better to gain experience understanding the forces that won't let you scale calmly.

This talk is based on story-telling, where Bas will share the creation of LeSS and within that side-track on explaining better how LeSS works. Expect most of the session to be in story format and not in typical introduction to X format. LeSS is a lightweight (agile) framework for scaling Scrum to more than one team. It was extracted out of the experiences of Bas Vodde and Craig Larman while Scaling Agile development in many different types of companies, products and industries over the last ten years. There are several case studies available and an book describing LeSS in detail. LeSS consists of the LeSS Principles, the Framework, the Guides and a set of experiments. The LeSS framework is divided into two frameworks: basic LeSS for 2-8 teams and LeSS Huge for 8+ teams. All of these are also available on the less.works website. LeSS is different with other scaling frameworks in the sense that it provides a very minimalistic framework that enables empiricism on a large-scale which enables the teams and organization to inspect-adapt their implementation based on their experiences and context. LeSS is based on the idea that providing too much rules, roles, artifacts and asking the organization to tailor it down is a fundamentally flawed approach and instead scaling frameworks should be minimalistic and allowing organizations to fill them in. Learning Outcomes: - See why experimenting is a key to improvement - Learning the difference between component and feature teams. - Understanding the difficult problem of owning vs renting processes - Understand the LeSS Frameworks and the LeSS 'complete' picture - Seeing why organizational complexity - added roles, processes and artifact - is harmful for agility.

This Hands-on Agile mini-series addresses 12 familiar Scrum Master anti-patterns: from the agile manager to the team secretary to dogmatism. Let us start with a short refresher from the Scrum Guide. According to it, the “Scrum Master is responsible for promoting and supporting Scrum as defined in the Scrum Guide. Scrum Masters do this by helping everyone understand the theory, practices, rules, and values of Scrum. The Scrum Master is a servant-leader for the Scrum Team.” Finally, the “Scrum Master helps those outside the Scrum Team understand which of their interactions with the Scrum Team are helpful and which aren’t. The Scrum Master helps everyone change these interactions to maximize the value created by the Scrum Team.” (1) The first Scrum Master anti-pattern covers the agile manager. Self-organization does not mean the absence of management: why handle pay-role as a Scrum Team? Outsourcing of tasks to the management is hence common. However, Scrum is by all means not about exercising command & control; the Scrum master is not a supervisor. (2) The second Scrum Master anti-pattern covers the Scrum team secretary and Scrum parents. The Scrum parent is generally shielding the team from the cold and cruel world, creating a safe & happy agile bubble. (3) The third Scrum Master anti-pattern covers the imposter. Dolla, dolla, bill ya'll—the Scrum Master imposter believes that this agile/scrum thingy is a fad—how hard can it be, the Scrum Guide is just 17 pages. (4) The fourth Scrum Master anti-pattern covers Scrum dogmatism. The Scrum Master enjoys teaching (and never leaves the Shu-phase). (5) The fifth Scrum Master anti-pattern covers failing at the capacity game. The Scrum master does not address the necessity of slack time by fighting the push for 100% utilization. (6) The sixth Scrum Master anti-pattern covers the flow undermining Scrum Master. The Scrum Master allows stakeholders to disrupt the flow of the development team during the sprint. (7) The seventh Scrum Master anti-pattern covers the Scrum Master with a metrics fetish, pursuing flawed metrics. The Scrum Master keeps track of individual performance metrics such as story points per developer per sprint. (8) The eighth Scrum Master anti-pattern covers the Scrum Master ignoring Scrum values. (9) The ninth Scrum Master anti-pattern covers the skipped Retrospective. All Scrum events are essential for a team’s success—you cannot skip any event. (10) The tenth Scrum Master anti-pattern covers the Groundhog-Day retrospective. The retrospective never changes in composition, venue, or length. In this case that the team will likely revisit the same issues over and over again—it’s groundhog day without the happy ending, though. (SUMMARY) The last chapter summarizes my dirty dozen of Scrum Master anti-patterns: from ill-suited personal traits and the pursuit of individual agendas to frustration with the team itself.

JUnit 5 has finally arrived! It introduces a completely new extension model that allows to customize almost every aspect of test execution. For example, it lets you define custom conditions to decide whether a test should be executed or skipped. Test lifecycle callbacks allow to encapsulate common setup/teardown code in an extension. An extension can pass values or inject dependencies to a test by post-processing test instances, or resolving test method parameters. Moreover, you can even write an extension that specifies how a test method becomes a template for multiple tests and how to invoke those, e.g. multiple times with different parameters or a different setup. In this talk, we will go on an example-driven tour of the new extension API using real-world testing scenarios. We will learn about the utilities an extension can use, e.g. how it should store state, so you will be ready to write your own extensions after this session. The talk will be interesting for experienced Java developers with prior knowledge of JUnit (at least JUnit 4).

It's all about Microservices nowadays. Many engineering teams have identified Microservices as an important component of this architectural approach to designing more flexible systems that can meet the needs of their fast changing businesses. Applying this approach however, is hard. We'll show how to start with microservices while doing live coding. You can learn how to start and what to look for starting with microservices. We will build a system with multiple services, service discovery, load balancing, failover and automatic deployment. The technologies we use: Amazon AWS, Consul, Packer, Ansible, Terraform, Go, Python.

On-boarding new UI5 developers, time from checkout to deployment, Code Review, centralized CI/CD, UI5 tooling… With the right setup it's a no-brainer! In this session I’d like to show you an approach that I’ve been using successfully for years now. Learn and see how you can scale your UI5 projects for multiple developers and teams! This session will cover: - Local dev environment - 4 standard project templates: app, component, library, FLP plugin - Automated installation of the SAPUI5 SDK - Integrate thirdparty js libs via NPM dependencies (i.e. moment.js) - Integrate js libs via NPM from your own internal/external git repos - Managing dependencies from your ui5 apps to ui5 libs/components + run everything even on localhost - Integrating custom themes even on localhost - Reducing risks & creating "Shared Understanding" with code reviews (Gerrit/git) - Test automation, Code Coverage & Test Driven Development - Allow your developers to use latest JavaScript features via Babel - Deploy to NW ABAP from localhost & Jenkins using the CLI (without Eclipse, without SAPGUI)

Scrum is an iterative and incremental agile product development method for managing software projects and product or application development. Scrum has not only reinforced the interest in project management, but also challenged the conventional ideas about such management. Scrum focuses on project management institutions where it is difficult to plan ahead. Mechanisms of empirical process control, where feedback loops that constitute the core management technique are used as opposed to traditional command-and-control oriented management. It represents a radically new approach for planning and managing projects, bringing decision-making authority to the level of operation properties and certainties.

Scrum is the most popular Agile framework in the world for effective team collaboration on complex projects. Scrum provides a small set of rules that create just enough structure for teams to be able to focus their innovation. Scrum is optimized for teams for teams of 5 to 9 people. Making Scrum work with larger teams or in large enterprise environments brings its own set of challenges. This talk presents 3 patterns used on enterprise teams to scale Scrum effectively with global teams. This presentation was given at the 2014 Tulsa Tech Fest in Tulsa, OK - http://developingux.com/TulsaTech2014/

ADR, or Architecture Decision Record, is a valuable tool in software development for several reasons. It provides a centralized location for documenting and tracking architectural decisions, aiding both current and future team members. ADRs enhance communication among team members by documenting the rationale behind architectural decisions, especially beneficial during onboarding of new team members or when revisiting decisions. They serve as a knowledge base, enabling teams to learn from past decisions and refine their decision-making process. Additionally, ADRs contribute to transparency by helping stakeholders understand the reasons behind specific architectural choices. As with any other tool or process, introducing them into an organization can face several obstacles, and overcoming these challenges is crucial for successful implementation. In this talk I go through some common problems and our way of solving them.

Foundation models are machine learning models which are easily capable of performing variable tasks on large and huge datasets. FMs have managed to get a lot of attention due to this feature of handling large datasets. It can do text generation, video editing to protein folding and robotics. In case we believe that FMs can help the hospitals and patients in any way, we need to perform some important evaluations, tests to test these assumptions. In this review, we take a walk through Fms and their evaluation regimes assumed clinical value. To clarify on this topic, we reviewed no less than 80 clinical FMs built from the EMR data. We added all the models trained on structured and unstructured data. We are referring to this combination of structured and unstructured EMR data or clinical data.
