IDENTIFYING AND AVOIDING PLAGIARISM

2. PLAGIARISM DEFINED
 Plagiarism may be defined as “taking the
work of someone else and pretending it is
our own.
(The Oxford Reference Dictionary)
According to Websters Encyclopedic
Dictionary of the English Language
plagiarism is “the unauthorised use of the
language and thoughts of another author and
the representation of them as one’s own”

3. WHAT’S WRONG WITH PLAGIARISING?
 Plagiarising is a from of cheating.
Representing another writer’s ideas or words
as your own is wrong.

4. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS –
ANSWERS THAT WORK 
 Is copying entirely wrong?
 What can I copy?
 How much can I copy?
 How can students avoid plagiarism?

5. FOR EXMPLE
 When asked to write an essay on, “Pollution”
if I log on to the internet and copy an essay
written by someone else. All I do is add my
name. Is that plagiarism?

6. Yes it is! 


7. HOWEVER
 If I long on to the internet and look up three
or four different essays, take a little from
each, make sure to cite the source in each
case and add some of my own writing would
it still be plagiarism?

It wouldn’t

9. IS THIS PLAGIARISM?
 When doing an assignment on Toyota Cars if
I were to Google the emblem given below on
the internet and use it, would that be
considered plagiarism?

10. FIX THE PROBLEM
 Yes it is and it is wrong to plagiarize. To fix this
add the source that the picture was taken from.


11. HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM?
 Document all sources
 There are many ways to do this such as:
 Use footnotes, Endnotes or Parenthetical References
 Write a Bibliography, References or Works
Cited Page at the end of your assignment to
list the sources that you used.

12. DO YOUR OWN WORK!
 Do not attempt to:
 Get someone else to write your paper for you
(your teacher probably knows your style and
what you are capable of)
 Download one off the internet
 Purchase instant essays made available on
the internet

13. REASONS NOT TO PLAGIARIZE
 It is unfair to the true author/owner/creator
 It doesn’t help you learn anything
 It doesn’t help your credibility/reputation
 Teachers want to know what YOU are truly
capable of
