अद्रव्य चिकित्सा aims at –
• physical, mental and spiritual well-being.
• to treat the diseases of body, mind and soul.
• here, no internal medicine as such is not administered.
Different methods of
Adravya chikitsa
दैवव्यपाश्रय चिकित्सा
Derived from अर्वथवेद.
Word “दैव” here has different meanings.

• अर दैवव्यपाश्रयिादावुलििाशुव्याचििरत्वेन |
 Acharya Chakrapani (c.su-11/54) opines that it works faster compared to other
treatment modalities. Hence Acharya Charaka has mentioned दैवव्यपाश्रय
चिकित्सा as the 1st method of treatment .
 converting the incredible, imperishable omnipresent cosmic energy into
individual psycho-intellectual energy so that adversities can be surpassed is the
aim of daiva vyapasharaya chikitsa.

• for inducing normal delivery (c.sha-8/8)
• better progeny (c.sha- 8/39 and yoga.ratna-8-10)
• for producing adequate lactation (su.sha-10/30-31)

• agantuja unmada – chanting lord Rudra
• skandagraha- bathing with water that is purified by gayathri mantra
• before giving the medicine for vamana karma

• before collecting drugs– like सॊिलि

• religious observances conductive to cleanliness and self control.

• atonement of the evil deeds done in the past , knowingly or unknowingly.
उपवास
• total or partial abstinence from intake of food as a method of purification
of mind and body.
प्रणिपाि
• bowing infront of the deity, or elders or gurus as a symbol of humility,
submission and surrender
• प्रणिपािो देवादीनां शारीरो निस्िारः|

• visiting sacred piligrimages and offering prayers to the gods at distant
places- serves by promoting pious thinking, change of climate and physical
exercise to the body.

 स्वस्त्ययन
o prayers done for peace and swasti with hymns taken from vedas (shanti
mantra) for universal peace. Diseases caused by cosmic powers like stars,
planets will be pacified by shanti mantras.
o Benefits :
 Immediate effect, painless procedure.
 brings back confidence based on faith.
 Derive power and bliss from omnipresent cosmic energy and also deep
within the inner levels of consciousness .
 by upavasa, there is ignition of jataragni, panchabhutagni, dhatvagni etc

क्षोभि – inducing shock संवािन – massage

 भयदशथन by physical and psychological methods .

Showing untoothed snakes, lions, elephants, terrifying with
criminals , with fearful weapons, ताडि (beating), बन्त्धि,
गॄहबन्त्धि (confinement to a dark room ) .
Psychoshock therapy
• Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) - done under general anesthesia
• small electric currents are passed through the brain, triggering a brief
seizure to cause changes in brain chemistry.
Done in cases of –
• severe depression
• treatment resistant
• mania
• catatonia
• dementia

 िी (बुद्वचि / intellect ) :
 िीबुथद्वचिः यया दििादििपववेिः |
 तत्र धीबुतद्धधबातयया्याश््मकािां भावािां दहतादहतिररच्छेदपवभागकाररिी |

the intellect normally views the things in their right perspective and to
differentiate things and make judgement .
eg: अत्वालभनिवेर् – patient cant distinguish between नि्य and अनि्य, दहत and
अदहत.
 िॄति (patience ): restraining mind from अदहत to avoid धॄनतभ्रंर्.
 िैयथ(willpower/valour) :
 धैयं िृतिश्िेिसः श्स्थर्वमचािलम ्, येि प्रनतपषद्धेषु ि प्रवततते, दहतेषु च ि सीदनत|
 धैयं दुःखसित्वं, येि दहतसेविमदहत्यागः|

stability of mind to do the right thing avoiding the wrong ideas
“अभीरुत” is regarded as one of the qualities of a good patient .
eg: भयज अनतसार
 स्िॄति (memory) : “अिुभूतथत स्मरिं”
स्मॄनत भ्रंर् is one of the main features in अिस्मार
• िनोतनग्रि : अदिि अर्थ तनग्रि
Techniques of controlling the mind
According to Acharya Charaka, Patanjali Yoga sutra and
Muktikopanishad
1. अभ्यास– दििोपसेवन – adopting healthy practices
2. वैराग्यं – अदिि अनुपसेवन – withdrawal from unwholesome practices
3. सािुसंचगि – िद्वपवध्यासेवा – association with the virtuous and pious
4. प्राितनरोिः – वायुतनग्रि – balancing and regulating the prana
5. अध्यात्िपवध्या – आत्िाददज्ञान - acquiring knowledge about self
DIMENSIONS OF सत्वावजय चिकित्सा
अभ्यास( constant practice )

Eg:
उचििाददििाद्विीिान् क्रिशो पवरिेन्त्नरः| दििं क्रिेि सेवेि क्रिश्िारोपददश्यिे||
प्रक्षेपापिये िाभ्यां क्रिः पादांमशिो भवेि्| एिान्त्िरं ििश्िोध्वं द्वव्यन्त्िरं ्यन्त्िरं िर्ा||
- gradual withdrawal from the ahitakara and gradual practice of hitakara in relation to
ahara, vihara, and also psychological disorders.
सािुसंचगि (association with the enlightened ones)
• िानसं प्रति भैषज्जयं त्ररवगथस्यान्त्ववेक्षिि्|
िद्वपवद्वयसेवा पवज्ञानिात्िादीनां ि सवथशः||
• while explaining sadvritta –
• सुिुखाः सवथभूिानां प्रशान्त्िाः शंमसिव्रिाः|
सेव्याः सन्त्िागथवलिारः पुण्यश्रविदशथनाः||
प्राितनरोिः( enhancement of prana)
Pranayama , a process brings about the integration and enhancement of prana
shakthi.
Acharya sushrutha has advocated pranayama in the treatment of hikka .

• प्रपवश्याध्यात्ििात्िज्ञः स्वे ज्ञाने पयथवक्स्र्िः||
सवथरावदििज्ञानः सवथभावान् परीक्षिे|

िाले व्यविरािीति ज्ञानं, येन दििसेवनस्यापवच्छेदः|
अश्टा.हॄ-१/२६ commentary
Spiritual wisdom that involves mind control, attainment of knowledge
undisturbed in all situations enabling one to examine the things in all aspects.
 आचवासि : assurance, cheering, consolation, encouragement .
Eg: ज्जवर caused by िाि शोि भय it is managed by आश्वासन,
providing the desired object and िषथि.
 सान्त््वि :pacification, appeasement
 दाि : gratification by gift to appease the patient or substitution of a lost item.
 प्रसादि : purification, cleaning , calming
 All these treatment modalities are told in unmada
chikitsa by Acharya Charaka & Acharya Sushrutha.
PSYCHOTHERAPY
o Treatment of problems of an emotional nature by psychological means in
which a trained person establishes a professional relationship with the
patient in (1) removing, modifying, or retarding existing symptoms, (2)
mediating disturbed patterns of behavior, and (3) promoting positive
personality growth and development.
o types and methods of psychotherapy:
 psychoanalysis
 psychodyanmic approach
 behaviour therapy : systemic desensitization,
gradual exposure
 humanistic therapy
 cognitive therapy
 cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT)
 family & group therapy

• Absolute eradication of दुःख attained by the elimination of desire(उिधा)
which are root cause of all miseries. Elimination of desires lead to
eradication of all miseries.

  • 4. • एतच्चैव भेषजमङ्गभेदादपि द्पवपवधं- द्रव्यभूतमः, अद्रव्यभूतं च… • अङ्गभेदाददत्यादद | अङ्गं शरीरं स्वरूपमिति यावि्; िेन स्वरूपभेदाददत्यर्थः | द्रव्यभूिं द्रव्यरूपि् एविद्रव्यरूपि्| च.पव.- ८/८७ - chakrapani Based on swaroopa , 1. which are dravyarupa 2. which are not dravyarupa अद्रव्य चिकित्सा aims at – • physical, mental and spiritual well-being. • to treat the diseases of body, mind and soul. • here, no internal medicine as such is not administered.
  • 6. दैवव्यपाश्रय चिकित्सा Derived from अर्वथवेद. Word “दैव” here has different meanings.  दैविदृष्टं िद्वव्यपाश्रयं- िच्ि यददृष्टजननेन व्याचिप्रत्यनीिं िन्त्रादद | ि.सू-११/५४-िक्रपाणि That which is not seen.  तनददथष्टं दैवशब्देन ििथ यि् पौवथदेदििि्| िेिुस्िदपप िालेन रोगािािुपलभ्यिे|| ि.शा- १/११६ acts of past life and their dispositions .  देवाः सुराः सुरयोनयश्ि देवेष्वचििॄ त्ययद्वविथिे िदचिदैपविि् । divine or celestial .
  • 7.  Acharya Charaka says- • नैव देवा न गन्त्िवाथ न पपशािा न राक्षसाः| न िान्त्ये स्वयिक्ललष्टिुपक्ललश्नक्न्त्ि िानवि ् || ि.तन.-७/१९ • प्रज्ञापरािाि् सम्भूिे व्यािौ ििथज आत्िनः| नामभशंसेद्वबुिो देवान्त्न पपिॄन्त्नापप राक्षसान् || आत्िानिेव िन्त्येि ििाथरं सुखदुःखयोः| िस्िाच्रेयस्िरं िागं प्रतिपद्वयेि नो रसेि्|| ि.तन.-७/२१,२२ • अर दैवव्यपाश्रयिादावुलििाशुव्याचििरत्वेन |  Acharya Chakrapani (c.su-11/54) opines that it works faster compared to other treatment modalities. Hence Acharya Charaka has mentioned दैवव्यपाश्रय चिकित्सा as the 1st method of treatment .  converting the incredible, imperishable omnipresent cosmic energy into individual psycho-intellectual energy so that adversities can be surpassed is the aim of daiva vyapasharaya chikitsa.

DIFFERENT METHODS OF दैवव्यपाश्रय चिकित्सा • तत्र दैवव्यिाश्रयं- मन्त्त्रौषधधमणिमङ्गलबल्युिहारहोमनियमप्रायश्चचत्तोिवासस्वस््ययिप्रणििातगमिादद च.सू-११/५४ • तयोः साधिानि- मन्त्त्रौषधधमणिमङ्गलबल्युिहारहोमनियमव्रतप्रायश्चचत्तोिवास स्वस््ययिप्रणििातगमिादीनि|| च.नि-७/१७ • मन्त्त्रौषधधमणिमङ्गलबल्युिहारहोमनियमप्रायश्चचत्तोिवासस्वस््ययिप्रणििातगमिाद्याः क्रिया इष्टयचच प्रयोज्येरि ् च.पव-३/३६ मन्त्त्र – incantation स्वस््ययि- hymns औषधध – wearing herbs प्रणििात – prostration मणि – wearing jewels व्रत – vows मङ्गल – auspicious rites उिवास – fasting बलल – sacrifices गमि – piligrimage उिहार- oblations प्रायश्चचत- atonement होम – religious rites नियम – restraint
  • 9.  िन्त्र : • for inducing normal delivery (c.sha-8/8) • better progeny (c.sha- 8/39 and yoga.ratna-8-10) • for producing adequate lactation (su.sha-10/30-31) • vishnusahasranama in jwara • agantuja unmada – chanting lord Rudra • skandagraha- bathing with water that is purified by gayathri mantra • before giving the medicine for vamana karma • chanting mantras along with the administartion of drug –िक्न्त्रि ििुसपपथ along with सारीव • before collecting drugs– like सॊिलि
  • 10.  तनयि • religious observances conductive to cleanliness and self control.  प्रायक्श्िि • atonement of the evil deeds done in the past , knowingly or unknowingly. उपवास • total or partial abstinence from intake of food as a method of purification of mind and body. प्रणिपाि • bowing infront of the deity, or elders or gurus as a symbol of humility, submission and surrender • प्रणिपािो देवादीनां शारीरो निस्िारः| गिन • visiting sacred piligrimages and offering prayers to the gods at distant places- serves by promoting pious thinking, change of climate and physical exercise to the body. • गिनं पवदूरदेवाददगिनि ्|
  • 11. िङ्गल  rites that are performed for the well being of the individuals ििीनािोषिीनां ि िङ्गल्यानां पवषस्य ि|| िारिादगदानां ि सेवनान्त्न भवेज्जज्जवरः| ि.चि.-३/३०९  स्वस्त्ययन o prayers done for peace and swasti with hymns taken from vedas (shanti mantra) for universal peace. Diseases caused by cosmic powers like stars, planets will be pacified by shanti mantras. o Benefits :  Immediate effect, painless procedure.  brings back confidence based on faith.  Derive power and bliss from omnipresent cosmic energy and also deep within the inner levels of consciousness .  by upavasa, there is ignition of jataragni, panchabhutagni, dhatvagni etc
  • 12. अद्रव्यभूि चिकित्सा िर यदद्रव्यभूिं िदुपायामभप्लुिि् | Treatment done by उिाय or using things which are अमूतत. उिायो िाम - भयदर्तिपवस्माििपवस्मारिक्षोभिहषतिभ्सतिवधबन्त्धस्वप्िसंवाहिाददरमूतो भावपवर्ेषो यथोकताः लसद््युिायाचचोिायालभप्लुता इनत | च. पव - ८/८७ भयदशथन - inducing fear वि – beating up पवस्िापन - surprising बन्त्ि - tieing up पवस्िारि – memorizing स्वप्न – inducing sleep क्षोभि – inducing shock संवािन – massage िषथि – excitement भत्सथन – scolding, threatening
  • 13.  भयदशथन by physical and psychological methods . देहदुःखभयेभ्यो दह िरं प्रािभयं स्मृतम ्| च.धच- ९/८४ Fear of death is more terrible than fear of physical agony.  inducing excitement by पवस्िापन and िषथि to remove the fear, depression etc  सिेिोद्धृतदंष्रेि दान्त्तैः लसंहैगतजैचच तम्| त्रासयेच्छस्त्रहस्तैवात तस्करैः र्त्रुलभस्तथा अथवा राजिुरुषा बदहिी्वा सुसंयतम्| त्रासयेयुवतधेिैिं तजतयन्त्तो िृिाज्ञया || च.धच- ९/८२-८३ Showing untoothed snakes, lions, elephants, terrifying with criminals , with fearful weapons, ताडि (beating), बन्त्धि, गॄहबन्त्धि (confinement to a dark room ) .

Psychoshock therapy • Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) - done under general anesthesia • small electric currents are passed through the brain, triggering a brief seizure to cause changes in brain chemistry. Done in cases of – • severe depression • treatment resistant • mania • catatonia • dementia
  • 15. सत्वावजय चिकित्सा • SUBJUGATION OF MIND” • सत्त्वावजयःपुनरदििेभ्योऽर्ेभ्यो िनोतनग्रिः| ि .सू -११/५४ • सत्त्वावजयो दह दृष्टद्वारोिकारी युश्कतव्यिाश्रये, तथाऽदृष्टद्वारोिकारी तु दैवव्यिाश्रये प्रपवर्नत| अत एवोकतं युश्कतव्यिाश्रयव्याकरिे- चेष्टाचच दृष्टफला इनत| चेष्टार्ब्देि मिचचेष्टाऽपि सत्त्वावजयलक्षिा गृययते| च.पव-८/८७ commentary • अदििेभ्यः सदार्ेभ्यॊ िनॊतनग्रिि िर्ा । िीिैयाथत्िादद पवज्ञानं सत्वावजयिुच्यिे ॥ आ.सौ.-२/१७० • िानसो ज्ञानपवज्ञानिैयथस्िृतिसिाचिमभः|| ि.सू.- १/५८ • िीिैयाथत्िाददपवज्ञानं िनोदोषौषिं परि ्|| अष्टांग.ह्रु.-1/26

  • 17.  िी (बुद्वचि / intellect ) :  िीबुथद्वचिः यया दििादििपववेिः |  तत्र धीबुतद्धधबातयया्याश््मकािां भावािां दहतादहतिररच्छेदपवभागकाररिी | अचटा.हॄ-१/२६ commentary the intellect normally views the things in their right perspective and to differentiate things and make judgement . eg: अत्वालभनिवेर् – patient cant distinguish between नि्य and अनि्य, दहत and अदहत.  िॄति (patience ): restraining mind from अदहत to avoid धॄनतभ्रंर्.  िैयथ(willpower/valour) :  धैयं िृतिश्िेिसः श्स्थर्वमचािलम ्, येि प्रनतपषद्धेषु ि प्रवततते, दहतेषु च ि सीदनत|  धैयं दुःखसित्वं, येि दहतसेविमदहत्यागः| अचटा.हॄ-१/२६ commentary stability of mind to do the right thing avoiding the wrong ideas “अभीरुत” is regarded as one of the qualities of a good patient . eg: भयज अनतसार  स्िॄति (memory) : “अिुभूतथत स्मरिं” स्मॄनत भ्रंर् is one of the main features in अिस्मार
  • 18. • िनोतनग्रि : अदिि अर्थ तनग्रि Techniques of controlling the mind According to Acharya Charaka, Patanjali Yoga sutra and Muktikopanishad 1. अभ्यास– दििोपसेवन – adopting healthy practices 2. वैराग्यं – अदिि अनुपसेवन – withdrawal from unwholesome practices 3. सािुसंचगि – िद्वपवध्यासेवा – association with the virtuous and pious 4. प्राितनरोिः – वायुतनग्रि – balancing and regulating the prana 5. अध्यात्िपवध्या – आत्िाददज्ञान - acquiring knowledge about self DIMENSIONS OF सत्वावजय चिकित्सा
  • 19. अभ्यास( constant practice ) िर क्स्र्िॊ यत्नॊ अभ्यासः । यॊ.सू-१/१२ स िु दीर्थिाल नैरन्त्ियथसत्िारसेपविो दॄढभूमि । यो.सू - १/१४ वैराग्यं ( detachment) “वसनपररत्याग” Eg: उचििाददििाद्विीिान् क्रिशो पवरिेन्त्नरः| दििं क्रिेि सेवेि क्रिश्िारोपददश्यिे|| प्रक्षेपापिये िाभ्यां क्रिः पादांमशिो भवेि्| एिान्त्िरं ििश्िोध्वं द्वव्यन्त्िरं ्यन्त्िरं िर्ा|| - gradual withdrawal from the ahitakara and gradual practice of hitakara in relation to ahara, vihara, and also psychological disorders. सािुसंचगि (association with the enlightened ones) • िानसं प्रति भैषज्जयं त्ररवगथस्यान्त्ववेक्षिि्| िद्वपवद्वयसेवा पवज्ञानिात्िादीनां ि सवथशः|| • while explaining sadvritta – • सुिुखाः सवथभूिानां प्रशान्त्िाः शंमसिव्रिाः| सेव्याः सन्त्िागथवलिारः पुण्यश्रविदशथनाः||
  • 20. प्राितनरोिः( enhancement of prana) Pranayama , a process brings about the integration and enhancement of prana shakthi. Acharya sushrutha has advocated pranayama in the treatment of hikka . आध्यात्ि पवध्या : • प्रपवश्याध्यात्ििात्िज्ञः स्वे ज्ञाने पयथवक्स्र्िः|| सवथरावदििज्ञानः सवथभावान् परीक्षिे| ि.शा- ३/२१ • आत्िपवज्ञानं योगाभ्याससिाचिना परिात्िस्वरूपपवज्ञानि्| • आत्िाददपवज्ञानं आत्िादयः आत्िदेशिालास्िेषां पवज्ञानिीदृशोऽििीदृशे देशे ईदृशे िाले व्यविरािीति ज्ञानं, येन दििसेवनस्यापवच्छेदः| अश्टा.हॄ-१/२६ commentary Spiritual wisdom that involves mind control, attainment of knowledge undisturbed in all situations enabling one to examine the things in all aspects.
  • 21.  आचवासि : assurance, cheering, consolation, encouragement . Eg: ज्जवर caused by िाि शोि भय it is managed by आश्वासन, providing the desired object and िषथि.  सान्त््वि :pacification, appeasement  दाि : gratification by gift to appease the patient or substitution of a lost item.  प्रसादि : purification, cleaning , calming  All these treatment modalities are told in unmada chikitsa by Acharya Charaka & Acharya Sushrutha.

PSYCHOTHERAPY o Treatment of problems of an emotional nature by psychological means in which a trained person establishes a professional relationship with the patient in (1) removing, modifying, or retarding existing symptoms, (2) mediating disturbed patterns of behavior, and (3) promoting positive personality growth and development. o types and methods of psychotherapy:  psychoanalysis  psychodyanmic approach  behaviour therapy : systemic desensitization, gradual exposure  humanistic therapy  cognitive therapy  cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT)  family & group therapy
