INTRODUCTION
For this assignment, I
wanted to explore the
career choices that two of
the most successful
comedic actors of the 90’s
have made. I am
researching why they would
choose to deviate from the
comedic genre and star in a
non-comedic role. The
actors I have chosen are Jim
Carrey and Adam Sandler.
FIRST WE WILL LOOK AT JIM
CARREY AND HIS FILMS
DURING THE 90’S
During the 90s Jim Carrey had a very profitable career.
His films generated a total of $1,531,873,976 worldwide.
He averaged a Rotten Tomatoes score of 66%.

Man on the Moon $47,407,635 63%
The Truman Show $264,118,201 94%

Ace Ventura When Nature Calls $212,400,000 33%
Dumb and Dumber $246,400,000 66%
The Mask $351,620,129 77%
Ace Ventura $107,217,396 46%
Average $218,839,139 66%
STATS
As you can see Jim Carrey’s films had average earnings
of $218,839,139 and a average Rotten Tomatoes score of
66%. However, Man on the Moon only grossed
$47,407,635.
SOME CRITIQUE ON JIM
CARREY
If “The Grinch” is an example
of why he needs to have
someone keep an eye on him
and keep him in check, then
“The Majestic” is an example
of why Jim Carrey still needs
an outlet for his pent-up
mania. This stultifying
performance is Carrey on
Ritalin, and it’s hard to take
him seriously when he’s
drowning in Capra-esque
nostalgia and syrupy
sentimentality. That
courtroom speech about the
first amendment is painful,
the antipode to his pre-
“Fight Club” self-beating in
“Liar Liar.” He does what he
can with the trite Oscar bait,
but this marks the first entry
in a decade-plus of mostly
SECOND WE WILL LOOK AT
ADAM SANDLER AND HIS FILMS
DURING THE 90’S
Adam Sandler had a very different career path but was
still successful. His films during the 90’s had a World Box
Office grossing of $940,767,567. His films had a average
Rotten Tomatoes Score of 41%.
Adam Sandler’s Movies

Punch-Drunk Love $24,591,031 79%
Mr. Deeds

Little Nicky

The Wedding Singer

Bulletproof

Happy Gilmore
$41,004,412 60%
Billy Madison
$25,460,475 46%
Average $94,076,757 41%
STATS
The results for Adam Sandler were surprising. I was
incorrect when I assumed that his non comedy role was
critically scrutinized. In fact, Punch Drunk Love has a
Rotten Tomatoes score of 79%. The only comedy movie
that he has starred in that came close was The Wedding
at 67%.
SOME CRITIQUE ON ADAM
SANDLER
Even in those two movies,
however, Sandler doesn’t
do much acting. The
genius of “Punch Drunk
Love” is that Anderson
stripped Sandler’s
aggressive howling —
think of his meltdowns in
“Happy Gilmore” and “Billy
Madison” — of its comedic
content, until there was
nothing left but dark
desperation. Similarly, in
“Funny People,” Sandler is
essentially playing himself:
a seasoned comedian
CONCLUSION
While doing this research I realized that I had made a
mistake when I assumed that starring in a non-comedic
roll was a gamble for an actor's career. As a matter of
fact, in these both cases they were scored higher than
their comedic rolls. I guess I assumed since they weren't
financially successful that meant that they were critically
scrutinized. The only thing that I couldn't find out is why
these actors decide to take on these non-comedic rolls.
The only assumption I can make is that they are trying to
challenge themselves. That being said I can see why an
actor like Adam Sandler wouldn't attempt to star in
another comedic roll since the movie like Punch Drunk
Love had low World Box Office gross.
