PRODUCT FACT SHEET
Pennington® Smart Seed®
Drought-Tolerant Grass Seed
Pennington Smart Seed remains green for up to three weeks without water and requires
up to 30 percent less water year after year versus ordinary seed. As a pure bred,
drought-resistant seed, Smart Seed helps establish fuller, healthier and greener lawns,
while efficiently using natural resources.
The seed varieties in Smart Seed have been qualified for their drought tolerance by the Turfgrass Water
Conservation Alliance (TWCA), an independent, research-focused organization that works with state university
systems and private enterprises to develop drought-tolerant turf grasses. By using a high-quality seed that requires
less water, like Smart Seed, lawns are more resilient and easier to maintain.
PRODUCT INFO:
Every bag contains pure seed and no filler—improving resistance to disease, insects and drought
Enhanced with Pennington’s exclusive MYCO Advantage seed technology—introducing beneficial
micro-organisms that attach themselves to the emerging seed roots for denser, deeper roots
Traditional and specialized variety blends or mixes are available—removing guesswork from mix selection
o Traditional blends/mixes:
 Perennial Ryegrass; Kentucky Bluegrass; Tall Fescue; and Fescue/Bluegrass
o Specialized mixes (customized to specific regional climates):
 Sun & Shade; Dense Shade; Northeast; Midwest; Pacific Northwest; and Pennsylvania State
FAST FACTS: Drought, Water Use & Your Yard
In 2012, the U.S. experienced the hottest year on record and two-thirds of the country faced drought—
the most ever experienced
36 states anticipate on-going local, regional or statewide water shortages, even under non-drought conditions
Americans spend on average 73 hours a year maintaining their lawns—watering being a main focus of
time and energy
Depending on their regional location, homeowners use between 30%-70% of their water outdoors
Lawns require approximately 1 inch of water per week to stay green in the summer, which equates to about
2,500 gallons of water per week to keep an average-sized lawn green
Up to 50% of the water used outdoors is wasted due to inefficient watering methods and maintenance
practices (evaporation, wind, runoff, plant types)
Available Sizes: 3-lbs, 7-lbs & 20-lbs* | Suggested Retail Price: $12.00 – 62.00*
