The Use of
Smartphone and
Academic
Performance of the
Grade 11 Students
of Tibanban National
High School
Academic performance is necessary
specifically in achieving the needed
knowledge and skills of the students.
Today, students are linked to various
technological devices that provides pleasure
and enjoyment that results the decline of
their academic performance.
CHAPTER 1
The problem and Related Literature
The current study regarding the use of smartphone and academic
performance of the students’ is beneficial to the following:
Students- it helps the students to be more aware and conscious
on what are the things that may affect their academic performances.
It also helps them to promptly address the factors that affect their
academic performance negatively. Moreover, it helps them know the
bad attributes of smartphone in their academic performance.
Teachers- it provides information to the teachers on the
influences of smartphones to the students’ performance. So they can
assist the students’ academic performance.
Parents/guardians- this study helps parents and guardians on
tracing the academic performance of their children.
Future researchers- this study may serve as a source of
information for further studies which is related to the current study
topic, for it contains a reliable information about the topic.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
Statement of the Problem
The current research aims to determine the level of significance of the
use of smartphones and academic performance of the grade XI
students in Tibanban National High School.
Furthermore it attempts to answer the following questions:
1.What is the extent of the use of smartphone by the students in terms
of:
1.1. Smart Phone Addiction
1.2. Communication?
2.What is the extent of students’ academic performance in terms of:
2.1. Class participation and
2.2. Study habit?
3.Is there a significant relationship between the use of smartphones
and academic performance of grade XI students?
Use of Smart phones

Addictiveness
2. Communication

2. Study habit
Independent Variable Dependent Variable
Conceptual Framework
Research Design
This study will use the descriptive
correlation method. It is use to
determine the relationship between two
variable, how do dependent variable
manipulated by independent variable
Costales, et al., (2003).
CHAPTER 2
METHODOLOGY
Research Locale
This is conducted at Tibanban
National High School as one of the
schools of the Division of the City of
Mati. The school is located at
Barangay Tibanban, Municipality of
Governor Generoso, province Davao
Oriental.
Research Respondent
The respondents of this study
will be the Grade 11 students of
Tibanban National High School (S. Y.
2019-2020) under the supervision of
the Department of Education (DepEd)
in the Division of the City of Mati.
Data Analysis
The data were gathered through the use of researchers’ instruments. The
researchers will use the following statistics to analyze gathered data.
Weighted Mean. This statistical use will help determine the extent of the use
smartphone and academic performance of the students. It is the most common
statistical tool especially in computing the population.
𝑨 =

A= average (or arithmetic mean)
N= the number of terms (e.g., the number of items or numbers being averaged)
X1=the value of each individual item in the list of numbers being averaged
Pearson Product Moment Correlation. It is use to determine the significant
relationship between the use of smartphone and academic performance of Grade
11 students in Tibanban National High School. It is the most appropriate test to use
when both the dependent variable and independent variable are from an interval
or ratio scale Rubing and Babbie (2010).

Summary of the Extent of the Use of Smart Phones
The result of the study is high which braces the notion Nurhaeni (2016) and
Hasan, B. (2017) who stated that the use of smart phone may be traceable to
smartphone addiction particularly online/offline gaming and communication through
various application (e.g. Facebook, messenger, Instagram etc.). These indicators will
highly affect the academic performance of the students.

Summary of the Extent of the Academic Performance
The result of the study is high which braces the viewpoint of Nurhaeini
(2016) and Hassan et al., (2017) which emphasizes that study habit and class
participation must be practiced by the students. They implied that class
participation and study habit play a vital role to the academic performance of
the students. The more student will participate the higher the GPA of the
students

Table 8; correlations between the two variables has no significant relationship.
The Pearson correlation has the value of .073. Thus, the use of Smart Phones has no
impact to the Academic Performance of students. The results were highly supported
by the view point of Panganiban et al., (2009) stated that a distractive atmosphere in
studying can bring the academic performance down Smart Phone was perceived as
favorable prior for the Academic work of the students since it can help in researching
for some discussed topics that the students fail to understand during the class session
Hasan, B. et al., (2017) and Cabral, A. et al., (2016).
Findings
1. The extent of the use of smart phone in terms of its indicators which is
smart phone addiction and communication got the highest average weighted
mean of 3.71 with descriptive equivalent of high. It means that using smart
phone to communicate is mostly observe by the students. It indicates that
communication of the students is the basic forecast of the use of smart phone
by the students. Evaluation got the lowest average weighted mean of 3.61 with
the descriptive equivalent of high. It mean that evaluation of smart phone
addiction of the use of smart phone is often observed. It indicates that smart
phone addiction significantly affect the academic performance of the students.
2. The extent of academic performance in terms of its indicators which
are class participation and study habit. Item number 2 which is the study habit
got the highest average mean of 3.64 with a descriptive equivalent of high.
CHAPTER 4
FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
It means that class participation is often observed. It indicates the
class participation plays a vital role of the academic performance
of the students which leads to high grade point average. Class
participation got a lowest average weighted mean of 3.52 with a
descriptive equivalent of high. It means that study habit is often
observed. It indicates that class participation contribute to the
academic performance of the students.
3. The overall findings got the following results a). The use of
smart phone got the overall mean of 3.69 with a descriptive
equivalent of high which means that the smart phone addiction
and communication of the use of smart phone is mostly observed.
b). Academic performance got the overall mean of 3.58 with a
descriptive equivalent of high which means that students have the
interest to their study.
Conclusion
In the light of findings of the study, the following conclusion here
drawn.
1. The extent of the use of smart phone by students in their
academic performance is low. It means that students using smart
phone in terms of smart phone addiction and communication
cannot affect the grade of the students.
2. The extent of academic performance of grade 11 is high.
It is because the students give more effort to their studies, they
motivate others to do same thing.
3. There is no significant relationship between the use of
smart phone and academic performance of grade 11 students.
This means that the use of smart phone have a great influence
on their academic performance.
Recommendation
In light of the foregoing findings and conclusions the
researchers drawn the following recommendation.
1. Students must limit or make a personal timeline for the
things they will do. So they can control their exposure on their
smartphones.
2. The parents/guardians of students must know the
academic performance of their children so that they will know
the things that can negatively affect the academic performance
of their children.
3. Teachers must apply some digital devices in the
academic works of the students for it may help the more
motivated to do the task. But it must be prohibited in some
time.
That’s all Thanks a lot.
