  3. 3. 1-WHAT IS GOTHIC ART?  Gothic art is an artistic style that developed in Western Europe during the Middle Ages, from the mid-12th century until the implementation of the Renaissance into the sixteenth century. Gothic art corresponds to a period of great dynamism in socio-economic terms.  The arrival of the Gothic had a sequence in time: it began in France, then spread to England and Spain, and quite some time later it would arrive to Germany; later still, to Italy.  Gothic art was manifested only in the disciplines most linked to the aesthetic (architecture, painting and sculpture). Gothic style gives great importance to the religious.
  4. 4. 2-EXAMPLE OF GOTHIC ART IN FRANCE  Built between 1163-1245, the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris is one of the oldest Gothic cathedrals in the world. The name means Our Lady and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary.  Important events have been held in Notre Dame, including the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte, the beatification of Joan of Arc and the coronation of Henry VI of England.  On 15 April 2019, Notre Dame Cathedral suffered a serious fire that caused significant damage to the roof and toppled the needle from the main tower. 5. 5. 3-GOTHIC ART IN SPAIN  In Spain, before entering the full Gothic, it has a proto-Gothic phase, in the second half of the 12th century, where the last Romanesque forms with the first Gothic forms will coexist. The characteristics that will be given within this proto-Gothic architecture will be austerity, balance and proportion.  All this will serve as the basis for the great Spanish Gothic of the thirteenth century, the century of the great cathedrals, such as the Cathedral of León, Toledo and Burgos.
  6. 6.  The Cathedral of Santa Maria de Regla de León is a temple of Catholic worship, consecrated under the advocation of the Virgin Mary.  Initiated in the XIII century, it is one of the great works of the Gothic style, of French influence. Known by the nickname Pulchra leonina, meaning 'Bella Leonesa', it is located in the middle of the Camino de Santiago.  The Cathedral of León is best known for taking to the extreme the "dematerialization" of Gothic art, that is, the reduction of the walls to their minimum expression to be replaced by coloured stained glass, constituting one of the largest collections of stained glass windows in the world. 4-EXAMPLES OF GOTHIC ART IN SPAIN León Cathedral
  7. 7.  The construction of the Cathedral was started by the Chapter Hall, a dependency that opens to the cloister, and was completed by the tower, in 1587 and at the beginning of the Renaissance. It is the work of Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón on plans by Juan de Badajoz.  The decoration of the cathedral gives doctrinal teaching through iconography. The sculpture presents the Old Covenant (the prophets and kings of the Old Testament) and the New Covenant (Jesus, the Apostles and the Saints with a prominent place for Our Lady) Oviedo Cathedral
  8. 8.  Its construction began in 1221, following French Gothic patterns. It had very important modifications in the XV and XVI centuries: The construction and subsequent remodeling were made with limestone extracted from the quarries of the nearby town of Hontoria de la Cantera.  It has the typical features of the French Gothic cathedrals. It has a Latin cross plan and three covers, although it presents later arrangements that lead us to the fifteenth and sixteenth century. Burgos Cathedral
