3. Leicester ONE Programme experience
The programme divided into 3 units in which the student is made aware of the impact and personal
strategic importance online media and networking may have on one’s career.
Unit 1: Defining your personal Brand
This unit made me aware of my digital footprint, which I never bothered to check
before. This led to a more careful approach on what I would like my personal brand
online to look like. The student is triggered to ask questions like, what do I really value, what are my goals
and what makes me stand out from the rest.
Unit 2: Introduction to Social Media for Employability
This unit illustrated a range of social media sites that are available online and how can these be
administered in the best possible way for better employability opportunities. What is ethical and a must
do in one’s social media account and what should be avoided.

Unit 3: Creating an Effective Online Presence
This unit moved on to guide and effectively manage social media sites and to show how we can be
effectively connected online with focus on self-promotion and the ability to be interesting by blogging and
sharing valuable information with the online community. In a nutshell a roadmap on how one’s online
presence can effectively stand out from the rest.
5. Personal Branding
Effectively managing your personal brand is definitely a requisite in today’s competitive environment.
With the drastic increase in Online Networking and the use of Social Media, people have the power to
advertise their skills and make themselves stand out in a way which was not possible in the pre-internet
era.
During the Online Networking Award I managed to identify a set of building blocks that will effectively
help me build a robust brand clearly identifying;
What I am able to become?
Demonstrate and highlight abilities, like communication and the ability to motivate and positively
influence colleagues / clients.
Build on strengths
Address weaknesses
Profoundly understand my values and be able to market them
Leverage competencies to create a brand called “ME”
6. Personal Branding
Lessons learnt through the ONE award
During the ONE programme I was made to reflect on my past Job experiences, strengths and weaknesses,
values which I treasure, my personality motivation and interests.
I was then challenged to evaluate possibilities in marketing my personal brand through different social
media sites and blogging, in a way to attract potential employers.
Blogging? why not?! Through reflective writing was a new experience for me and it captured my interest.
I found that writing on my personal journey and going through past experiences in a reflexive manner is
a self-development tool in itself!! In addition reviews by my peers was quite encouraging given the fact
that I am quite a rookie in the field.
7. Personal Branding
....making Social Media work for you….
From the considerable amount of social media sites available I have used only Facebook, Youtube, Twitter
and LinkedIn accounts for different purposes prior to my enrolment in the ONE award. I am now aware
of other networking possibilities that before did not even cross my mind!
My perception of LinkedIn is that of an ever-changing online CV. It’s features
and functionalities are adequate to present full education, work experiences and attributes whilst helping
you promote your full potential for potential employers. However I gave little attention to detail prior to
this course – I have now a full detailed profile and practically doubled my connections since my profile
upgrade!
8. Personal Branding
....making Social Media work for you….
I mainly use my Facebook account to keep in touch with friends, both old and new. I use it in
conjunction with Instagram to share photos which most of the time are powerful more than profile
statuses. Though not used for employment purposes Facebook must be used responsibly to enhance your
person brand, by being consistent in your views, and being both ethically and morally correct in what you
post.
Twitter can be described as a streaming news medium for all the people / societies / companies / artists
one wants to follow. I usually scroll through the tweets until I meet something that captures my attention.
My Youtube usage is quite high and I also feature in my company’s
website channel which we lately made to market our services
