CARESTREAM Vue PACS to Streamline Its Imaging
Process While Delivering Personalized Patient Care
Radiology Reports are Available in Minutes so Physicians Can Treat Patients
Immediately after Imaging Exams are Performed
Sunway Medical Centre Sdn. Bhd. (SunMed) is one of the
largest tertiary care private facilities in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
SunMed offers world-class medical services including inpatient
and outpatient specialty care, wellness promotion and 24-hour
emergency services. The centre has over 1,000 dedicated
medical personnel, including more than 150 consulting
specialists. The 350-bed hospital has 12 operating theatres and
SunMedâs comprehensive specialty services create an
integrated, patient-centric approach to healthcare.
SunMedâs progressive imaging department performs 75,000
procedures per year and its volume is expected to expand to
100,000 annual procedures over the next few years.
In keeping with its commitment to use of advanced
technology, the hospital recently replaced a legacy solution
with a CARESTREAM Vue PACS that offers innovative features
and functionality. When selecting a new PACS, the radiology
departmentâs goals were to provide better patient care,
enhance clinical accuracy and improve productivity.
The Vue PACS with native Vue Reporting expedites reading
and reporting of imaging exams and delivers access to
industry-leading clinical tools that can enhance the diagnostic
process. Carestreamâs zero-footprint Vue Motion image viewer
equips physicians with immediate access to images and
reports, so they can display medical images on a mobile device
while explaining diagnosis and treatment recommendations at
the patientâs bedside.
Immediate and Dramatic Improvements to the
Department
âOur new PACS delivers dramatic improvements for patients,
staff and radiologists. Radiologists now use Carestreamâs
native dictation module to dictate and accept radiology
reports, which are immediately available from the PACS. Today
our radiology reports can be available in as little as five
minutes, which is a big improvement, since we previously had
a cumbersome process that involved transcriptionists,â said
Goh Chin Chin, Radiology Manager.

With the implementation, SunMed also has improved the
accuracy of patient demographic information, since all
modalities can now retrieve a patient worklist from the
Vue PACS. This also led to productivity gains since
technologists previously needed to enter patient information,
which was time consuming and could also lead to errors in
data entry.
In addition to productivity gains, SunMed is looking to improve
enterprise access of images and reports. In the past, SunMed
could not store all types of data since its legacy PACS archive
was limited in its functionality and workflow management. All
final radiology reports are now securely stored in the
Vue Archive. As part of the migration process, SunMedâs
radiologists will be able to access all historical reports when
they are reporting the current exam. Clinicians also gain much
more efficient access to patient images and reports. To ensure
continuous performance and accessibility for all users, SunMed
is duplicating radiology data to a second PACS server to ensure
data access in case of a network outage on the primary server
or other problems.
Zero Footprint Viewer Will Deliver Images to
Physicians for Bedside Consultations
SunMed deployed Carestreamâs Vue Motion image viewer that
allows physicians to view radiology reports and imaging studies
from any location using laptops, mobile devices or
workstations. Physicians can show images to patients and their
families as they explain the diagnosis and treatment. This will
greatly enhance bedside consultations by allowing family
members to understand the situation and provide support to
the patient during a very difficult time. Vue Motion also
enables physicians to consult with radiologists and other
specialists since all users can view the report and images
simultaneously from any location using mobile devices or
workstations.
The new PACS also offers a Vue Beyond dashboard that will
equip SunMedâs staff to manage workflow and deliver more
responsive patient care. Vue Beyond tracks each patient from
the time they enter the imaging department to the time the
radiology report is available.
âReal-time data displays any delays in the patient imaging
process, so we can take immediate steps to solve any
problem,â said Goh. âThis tool also supplies an overview of
important data (by day, week or month) including average
patient wait times, the number of studies performed for each
modality, and the number of reports generated by each
radiologist.â
By leveraging the statistics from Vue Beyond, Goh plans to
create a streamlined imaging process to help reduce patient
wait times and an efficient workflow that allows physicians to
review diagnoses with their patients in a very timely manner.
This helps to meet SunMedâs commitment to delivering
exceptional patient care.
Advanced Diagnostic Tool Helps Enhance Clinical
Accuracy
Vue PACS has a variety of native advanced processing tools
that can provide better visualization of anatomy to allow
radiologists to more accurately detect and diagnose conditions.
One key feature in Vue PACS is the PowerViewer, which
automates registration and volumetric matching of studies
created at different times by different modalities. âThis process
is faster and more accurate than manual review methods and
is especially helpful when viewing CT and MR exams. The
advanced diagnostic tools offered by the Vue PACS allow us to
achieve our goal of enhancing patient care,â said
Dr. Adam Pany, Chief Radiologist.
SunMed is also using the Vue PACS Lesion Management
application that presents precise data comparison for
localization and measurements as well as data for oncology
follow-up. The ability to semi-automatically measure the
volume of a lesion expedites tracking an increase or decrease
in lesion size. The lesion management capability also equips
radiologists to deliver consistent, standardized oncology
reporting that aids in communication and collaboration to help
determine the best course of treatment for each patient.
