Curtain Barrair Against Light, Noise, Heat, Fire and Electromagnetic Radiation
1. BARRIER CURTAIN AGAINST LIGHT, NOISE, HEAT, FIRE AND ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Protection against various types of radiation and the
like is required in various technical fields: for
example, to block cell phones in hospitals, reduce
external noise, block electromagnetic signals in
aircraft, etc.
Researchers from the Polytechnic University of
Valencia in Gandia Campus have designed a new
curtain barrier that provides protection against
electromagnetic or light radiation, as well as
thermal, acoustic and fire protection. To be more
precise, the invention consists of a curtain that
combines all the abovementioned types of
protection.
The key lies in the combination of materials, which
are essential to achieving said protection.
Furthermore, one of the standout properties of the
curtain is its reduced weight, allowing for easier
transport, installation and dismantling.
Currently there are materials on the market that
combine 4 of the 5 properties previously described;
for example, solid panels with antipyretic,
soundproof, fireproof and anti-electromagnetic
properties, used to insulate walls and similar
structures in construction. However, these panels do
not permit quick and easy transportation, assembly
and disassembly for temporary blocking of radiation.
In contrast, the curtain developed in the Campus
Gandia of the UPV was designed with a totally
innovative concept; rather than a rigid structure,
they created a curtain that allows temporary
blocking of radiation. Since it is mobile, it can be
unfolded or folded when necessary without any
major construction.
Accordingly, due to the unique characteristics of the
composition of the curtain barrier and its reduced
thickness, it has applications in numerous fields.
INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS
The main end-industry where this invention can be applied is the textile industry, particularly the part of the
industry specifically dedicated to construction.
The curtain also has generic applications for overriding cell phone signals, reducing noise, increasing
energy efficiency, maintaining the fire resistance and opacity of the area where it is installed, etc.. In
transportation it can serve as a mobile separator, cell phone signal reducer, etc.
Applications can also be found in the field of medicine, as it can provide a physical separation between
hospital beds, reduce interference from different areas of the operating rooms, etc.. It can also be applied in
Neonatal Wards, ensuring the best acoustic and thermal conditions for newborns, and especially indicated
for noise reduction and electromagnetic protection of Neonatal Intensive Care Units.
In the scientific field, it allows you to convert any room into an electromagnetic anechoic chamber.
In outdoor events, it reduces background noise and interference between events.
TECHNICAL ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS FOR BUSINESSES
The curtain fulfills a multi-barrier function: against light, noise, thermal insulation, reaction to fire and electro-
magnetic radiation.
With regard to light, it is opaque due to the materials used. With regard to noise and electromagnetic waves,
when placed near the wall, it absorbs any noise that strikes it and neutralizes the electromagnetic signals
from cell phones, Wi-Fi, etc., making for an environment free of noise and electromagnetic pollution.
Electromagnetic radiation is suppressed to levels as high as those in an anechoic RF test chamber. With
regard to thermal insulation, the materials chosen guarantee low thermal conductivity and high resistance to
airflow, giving it tremendous heat insulation attributes.
In the tests carried out in the Campus of Gandia laboratories, the curtain performs well against light. It has
high sound absorption capacity and high sound insulation levels. Electromagnetic testing offers evidence that

insulating attributes equivalent to an electromagnetic chamber are obtained. The reaction to fire is M1, which
ensures that the material is nonflammable. Thermal insulation provides "thermal insulation" figures.
It is a unique product in the global market that solves specific problems of the different scopes that have
been mentioned above.
STATE OF DEVELOPMENT OF THE TECHNOLOGY
The technology has been fully developed and is in the trial phase. The curtain's behavior has been tested in
the laboratory and in the field.
