11. Urban Agriculture
âThe future needs an agricultural system that
produces about 50 percent more food to feed the
world's 9 billion people by 2050; that provides
adequate nutrition; that substantially raises the levels
and resilience of incomes and employment for most
of the world's poorâŚthat provides environmental
services such as absorbing carbon, managing
watersheds, and preserving biodiversity; and that
uses finite land and water resources more efficiently.â

Our College is the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES). There are five land-grant centers and five academic degree programs in CAUSES.
The Center for Sustainable also includes the WRRI and a state of the art testing lab. The CFSD contributes to all programs in CAUSES by use of the following conceptual framework for sustainability.
Each faculty or staff member in the Center has a joint-appointment position: Research, Teaching, and Extension.
The organizational structure for the Center is:
We have three unique âplaygroundsâ to test ideas and implement sustainability: (1) main campus, our (2) Muirkirk Research Farm, and (3) the District. Our campus sustainability program has a strong water and agriculture emphasis.
Muirkirk is a 143-acre parcel located just outside the District in Beltsville, MD. The farm is also referred to as an âAgricultural Experiment Station.â
Muirkirk Research Farm is our AES. Complexity arises when considering the scale and density at which these projects must be implemented in the District. Additionally, there is the potential for increasing nutrients in order to increase production in poor urban soils. This is where we began to see the need to integrate urban agriculture with urban stormwater management.
In the past what has been done to increase agricultural production? One
