- What is that writing on the walll telling us... We hope its telling our Congressional reps to take a lesson from our CTSI trainees and focus on evidence, good methods, collaboration and collegiality an fix this budget mess. We hope the writing on the wall is NOT telling us that the NIH budget is bound for further cuts…
- Goal is to provide training in all types of research, AND to encourage collaboration at the intersections.
- Overall approach is to have a set of educational courses that are used in a “mix and match” approach for all, with training programs specific to level of education and/or discipline. MUCH left out. Each one of these programs had multiple goals and many achievements. Hard to pick just a few.
- A total of about 1350 students took some TICR course in the last funding cycle. Do not have the PhD program on this chart. PhD just started and currently enrolls about 4 students/year. In the Master’s, 90% of graduates are working in university-based academic centers 5 years after graduation and 70% are performing clinical or translational research 50% or more of their time
- Aim to build on our core set of courses with new, focused offerings that allow students to build their own tracks. The 2 new ones that we proposed to build in the prior funding period were T1 and T1 tracks. Plan a track in Diversity
- Note that several of these programs are new – PuP, Fellows, GEMS, MTM This lists GEMS scholars, but have 75 in GEMS classes.

- 70% of fellows intend to pursue further training in clinical and translational research or already occupy academic positions in this field, suggesting that the program is meeting its goal of encouraging students to pursue additional training and careers in clinical and translational research.
- Thus far, 48 residents have received up to $2,000 to complete a specific mentored research project. 22 residents received pilot funding in 2009-2010. There is a wide spectrum of research represented from 11 different residency programs.

The current Resident Research Scholar is Dr. Rita Mukhtar, a 4 th year surgery resident, who is conducting a project on immunity and response to breast cancer therapy with her mentor, Dr. Laura Esserman, Professor of Surgery and Director of the Carol Frank Buck Breast Cancer Center. Dr. Mukhtar was a PACCTR fellow as a medical student, and her participation in the Resident Scholar program embodies the promise of graduated and integrated training that we can achieve only with the coordinated approach offered by the CTST program. s
