A survey of 1338 students at Sheffield University was conducted from March 8th to understand student use of mobile technology and access to online services. The preliminary results found a 5% response rate, with 52% of respondents being female and 48% male. Student comments expressed both concerns about hacking and phishing, as well as a desire for mobile versions of key university websites. Further analysis of the full data will look more closely at responses by faculty and student type.

51% Haven’t heard of it. 28% have. Of those that have heard of it 54% from University communications, 22% from App store/App world, 21% from a friend.Users liked – being able to see timetables and PC availability. Don’t like – friend locater (no-one signs in). Improvements wanted were – ability to book PCs, get exam results, renew book, use MOLE.
92% own a laptop. Majority Windows (84%) Mac 14%. 37% do not bring their laptop on campus. 52% connect to wireless. Less use of laptops in Lectures than phones. More use in libraries.
10% own a netbook. 79% Windows, 14% Linux. 70% access wireless. 19% don’t bring on campus. 10% don’t know how to access. Similar usage to laptops but a bit less surfing the net.
7% own a tablet/e-reader. More have a Kindle than an iPad (double). 40% access wireless. 28% don’t bring to campus. 30% don’t know how.Usage – extra comments ‘reading!’ Similar profile to others – bit less accessing Academic services.
15% have an iPod Touch. 19% don’t bring on campus. 63% connect to eduroam. 16% don’t know how. Less used for emailing and accessing Academic services – but still used for these things.
74% very confident with phones, 71% laptop, 40% netbook, 43% tablet, 60% iPod Touch.
