4. • Since 2004 ( 14 years ago) when I first met Reimund we have been always facing Accounting challenges that some
how connect Brasil and Europe
• At first we were discussing how the combination of BRGAAP and GERMANGAAP (famous HB2) would impact the
consolidated audit of the Talanx Group since both of us where engaged on the audit of individual companies that are
part of the consolidated Financial Statments, when we were working for KPMG
• In 2010 when the draft for discussion related to Insurance contracts were released, again we started discussing the
impacts for Brazil and Europe, but this time I was working for a multinational Insurance company in Brazil and he was
still working at KPMG
• In 2016 Reimund came down to Brazil and had a flavour on how important is the Insurance Market here. But due to
the fact Talanx Group was needing his services on another BIG CHALLENGE (IFRS 17) he had to come back to German
but bearing in mind that something should be done here in Brazil in order to improve and boost the exchange of
ideas on the rules issued by IASB that have been impacting both countries;
• In 2017, Reimund discussed with SOICON how to bridge the classical gap between Auditors (advocating the ruleset)
and IT (not “exactly” knowing what to implement).
Thus, SOICON, also beeing involved in IFRS 17 program steering, defined an implementation approach.

Pontos importantes a serem considerados

General Measurement Model (GMM)
Premium Allocation Approach (PAA)
Even though the PAA is a simplified measurement model, the changed level of contract aggregation and new contract grouping has a

Is the coverage period of the group of

Does the PAA for the group of

Challenges
Experiences from Europe
The implementation of the parallel run during the transition period is highly time
critical
In order to deliver comparable IFRS 17 figures in 2021 financial statements,
insurers need to report under IFRS 4 AND IFRS 17 in 2020
Hence, there is a significant demand for a comprehensive IT infrastructure, capacity
and human resources
If the parallel run cannot be realized, insurers still need to report comparable
figures, which are IFRS 17 compliant in the financial statements in 2021
Many insurers started late with the IFRS 17 implementation, which makes the
realization of a parallel run highly doubtful
The complexity of the implementation and the tight deadline hinders many
insurers to perform a parallel run
Solutions for the comparable figures in 2021 are yet to be defined

adicionados, verificados e ajustados.

Challenges
Experiences from Europe
The new transparency under IFRS 17 requires the insurance
companies to report in new structures
Insurance portfolios are likely to change under IFRS 17 due to
the changed risk assessment of contracts Example: D&O
contracts
In order to perform a compliant portfolio aggregation the
respective data quality needs to be in store
Insurers need to assess and analyse each insurance contract to
build the basis of a compliant aggregation
The data quality of insurance contracts is mostly not sufficient
enough to build IFRS 17 compliant insurance portfolios
Many insurers start building measurement models without
acknowledging the need for the required data quality of their
contracts

reconhecer o prejuízo no ano do fechamento do contrato / underwriting year

Challenges
Experiences from Europe
IFRS 17 requires insurance companies to report and publish their onerous groups
of insurance contracts
The higher level of transparency and risk assessment does not allow for a bundling
of onerous and profitable contracts into one group of contracts
Insurers have difficulties to accept the high transparency which allows investors
to see how insurance portfolios are actually structured
ONEROUS CONTRACTS
Under IFRS 17 groups of insurance contracts distinguish between
onerous contracts, contracts without the risk of becoming onerous and
other contracts. Each group is measured and reported in the financial
statement.
