Overview
The Parts List screen provides a way to work with parts that are associated with a drawing.
Information entered on the Parts List is reflected elsewhere in CMPRO, such as when BOMs or
Part Trees are created. Taking the time to enter the parts data correctly during development will
provide many benefits to the user down the line.
There are two ways in which to view the Parts List screen: 1) from the Drawing Detail screen, or
2) from an IN WORK Drawing Change Notice (DCN). Although the Parts List screen includes
quite a lot of detail, we will focus solely on the basic functions of the links arranged horizontally
across the top, just below the Header Bar. These links provide user access to many fundamental
processes relating to the creation and maintenance of a Parts List, as well as other functionalities
closely related to parts (such as PD Trees, for example). Although the information contained in
this process guide is directed mainly at the general user, there is also content that the
administrative user will find useful.
Scope
This document provides brief explanations for the link elements arranged horizontally just
underneath the Header Bar on the Parts List screen. We will briefly define the following links

performing parts-related tasks.
Creating Our Scenario
In these process guides, we attempt to provide you with realistic scenarios that would likely be
encountered in a typical business organization. Let’s talk for a moment about our project…
All Terrain Mobility, Inc. (ATM) is a fictitious corporation involved in the business of
building dune buggies. This is a new small business located in Baja, California, where,
along with its manufacturing enterprise, it also conducts testing of new prototypes. ATM
builds its own welded buggy frames and bodies for purchase by the consumer. They also
maintain a broad inventory of parts relating to the different models they offer.

Tony Brighten, CMPRO’s Junior Drafter at ATM, will be responsible for compiling a Parts List
for drawings associated with the project. The parts data he will enter is based on information
provided to him by the project’s engineers.
He first wants to familiarize himself with the basics of the Parts List screen, its links and their
functions…
User Process
Definitions
To understand how the Parts List screen organizes parts, it's important to first define the types of
parts that can be included on a list. The two basic types of parts you will readily encounter on
most any Parts List are:
• Assembly – a created part; made up of components (see Parts List topic in the User’s
Guide for definition of created part).
• Component – although this term may typically describe an individual, basic part as it
appears on a Parts List, it can also be used to describe an assembly that is at the
component level on a Parts List.
An important concept to understand is that an assembly on one drawing can appear as a
component on another drawing. To better visualize this, think of using the Add
Component link on the Parts List screen to add what is actually an assembly to the list.
Once added, the assembly appears as an indentured component to the main assembly on
the Parts List.
There are additional clues on the Parts List screen to further distinguish subassemblies
from components. For instance, a yellow cog means that the component listed is actually
a subassembly to the main assembly on the Parts List (see Figure Figure 1 below).
o In the screen capture, Callout 1 shows the main assembly on this Parts List.
o Callout 2 shows all of the indentured components under the main assembly.
o All of these components were added using the Add Component link (Callout 3).
o The yellow cogs next to each item signify that, in fact, all of these components are
actually subassemblies.
o Callout 4 shows that the Type of Part for each component is ASSEMBLY.
o Callout 5 shows the View Defined Assy PL link that appears in the Part Details
section of the screen whenever the item currently being viewed is an assembly.
Clicking the link opens the Parts List on which the selected part (i.e. the selected
assembly) appears, itself, as the main component.

Beyond the definitions for these two fundamental terms – component and assembly – you might
encounter several others in CMPRO, depending on what your responsibilities are. If you want to
dive into more detail, see the Parts List and Part Master topic in the User’s Guide.
Getting Started
Tony has received notice that a Parts List will soon be needed for the drawing associated with a
portion of the dune buggy’s chassis. He wants to familiarize himself with the links used to create
and maintain a Parts List. He does this by viewing a Parts List on a similar drawing. From the
Drawing Detail screen, Tony selects the Parts List link in the Drawing Options section of the
left pane (Figure 2 below).
Figure 2 (Drawing Detail Screen)
This action displays the Parts List screen (Figure 3 below).

Figure 3 (Parts List Screen)
As previously mentioned, the links we review here are arranged horizontally across the top, just
below the Header Bar seen in Figure 3 above. Let’s begin…
Return to…
This link is used to quickly return to the parent item, such as the Drawing Detail screen (Figure 4
below) or the DCN Detail screen (the parent record’s type and number are displayed as part of
the link).
Figure 4 (Parts List Screen – Return to…link)
Sort Parts
The Sort Parts link is conditional, so only certain sites will see this link displayed on the Parts
List screen. Parts sorting is approached from left to right, with parts starting with numbers
appearing before those starting with letters (for ex. 3000841 would appear in the list above
300841, which would sort above A300841).

Add Assy / Detail
By clicking on the Add Assy / Detail link, the Drawing Parts Assembly Create screen displays.
This link is used to add an individual assembly or detail part to a Parts List.
Add Component
Similar to the Add Assy / Detail link, this link provides a way to add an individual component
(remember to see the definition of ‘Component’ above) part to a Parts List. Clicking this link
will display the Drawing Parts Component Create screen.
Import/Export
Clicking on this link displays the Import / Export pop-up screen (Figure 5 below). Links to
options for importing and exporting parts to and from the Parts List are available on this screen.
Figure 5 (Import / Export Pop-up Window)
CMPRO allows parts to be imported from a spreadsheet to a Parts List that is being created or
edited. Parts can also be imported from an existing drawing. Parts lists can also be exported as
an .xls file format. This process will export the Parts List information, along with all the drawing
and drawing related information. Also provided are the Import and Export to SolidWorks
links, (SolidWorks is a 3D CAD modeling and design software).
Reports
Figure 6 (Reports - Pop up Screen)
Selecting the Reports link opens a pop-up screen containing a selection of three different types
of reports (Figure 6 above). Each link can be selected to view the options available for each
report. Here, we provide a brief description of the three:
• Parts List Report - CMPRO’s standard Parts List report. This report meets prescribed
military standards (MIL-STD).

electronic, mechanical, photocopying, recording, or otherwise, without prior written permission.
• BOM Report - Bill of Materials (BOM) Report. This is an abbreviated Parts List report
designed to display just a few of the part detail fields.
• CASS Report - A rather daunting label, the Consolidated Automated Support System
(CASS) report simply presents parts-related information in a format that is preferred by
some customers.
Quick View Full PL
This link allows additional parts-related information to be seen at a glance, such as CAGE, Units,
and Part Category. Viewing such detailed information isn’t possible from the Parts List screen
without clicking each part separately.
Synchronize Parts
The Synchronize Parts link provides a useful process that synchronizes specific fields between
Part Master and the Parts List. The synchronize process behavior is dependent upon business
rule settings. The Synchronize Parts link is discussed in greater detail in the forthcoming
Drawing Parts List - Synchronize Parts Process Guide. Keep checking under the Training tab on
the CMPROficiency website, as new Process Guides are frequently added.
Validate Parts
This link provides an optional process to confirm parts on the Parts List have been approved.
When the Validate Parts link is selected (it is only visible when a site has activated the FORCE
VALIDATE PART WITH PART MASTER business rule), CMPRO verifies whether or not the
parts on the Parts List are valid. An invalid part will be signified by a red-colored icon to the
immediate left of the part's number on the Parts List screen.
There are a few additional aspects to part validation that involve business rules, part type, the
usage of DCNs, etc. Please refer to the forthcoming Drawing Parts List - Validate Parts Process
Guide, located under the Training tab on the CMPROficiency website for additional information
on this topic.
For additional information on both Synchronization and Validation, please see the Parts List
topic in the User’s Guide.
Drawing Notes
Selecting the Drawing Notes link displays the Drawing Notes screen. This link offers an
optional way to edit drawing notes from the Parts List screen. A link of the same function is
located in the Drawing Options section in the left pane of the Drawing Detail screen.
Create PD Tree
This link provides a quick way to initiate a product definition (PD) part tree from a Parts List
without having to go through the Menu. The PD part tree involves more elements than can be

discussed in this process guide. We will soon be posting more information on this topic on
CMPROficiency.
Drawing Search
The Drawing Search link allows you to access the Drawing Repository Search screen without
having to do so through the Menu.
Delete All Parts
Use this link to simultaneously delete all parts, part notes, and alternate parts on the currently
displayed drawing (may not be the latest revision). A ‘Warning’ message is given to confirm
that the action is desired. Caution: if there are no previous drawing revisions available, once you
delete the parts, they cannot be retrieved.
Revision History
The Revision History link offers a way to provide details of the drawing’s revision history (the
same link is available on the Drawing Detail screen). The Description of Change field provides
lots of space to enter additional information regarding the changes made to a drawing and its
parts.
Multi-Create Part Master
This link is only available when the business rule ALLOW MASS PARTMASTER CREATE
FROM PL is set to YES. Users with the appropriate permissions can use this link to
automatically create records for each part on the Parts List not currently in Part Master. During
this process, each new Part Master record receives an automatic sign-off by the user. The record
is then placed in the POOLED NO OWNER work queue and eventually workflowed to
RELEASE as an approved part.
Tabular Part Notes
Normally, you have to select a part from the Parts List screen to view its part notes. This link
allows users with edit permissions to open the Tabular Part Notes screen and display all the part
notes relating to the Parts List at one time. From this screen, you can edit or remove multiple
part notes at once.
Tabular Parts List Edit
Users with edit permissions can use this link to view details for all the parts on the drawing’s
Parts List collectively. Otherwise, the same information can only be seen from the Parts List
screen by selecting and viewing details of a single part at any given time. From the Tabular
Parts List Edit screen, we can edit all of the same fields that are available to us in the Part
Details section of the Parts List screen.

Mass Create Released Part Master
This link is only available to a user who has the user function ALLOW MASS CREATE
RELEASED PART MASTER FROM DWG PL. The process will create Released, Active, and
Approved Part Master records for all component parts on the Parts List that are not already in
Part Master.
