3. INTRODUCTION :
• Many addictive drugs can cause problems in the reproductive
system and its related fertility cycle of both males and females.
• One of the most common addiction which is considered here is
alcohol.

4. ADDICTION :
Addiction is a brain disorder characterised by compulsive engagement in
rewarding stimuli, despite adverse consequences.
E.g. Morphine
Cocaine
Alcohol
Cigarette etc

5. INFERTILITY
• Defined as a failure to conceive within one or more years of regular
unprotected sex.
• Primary infertility – Who have never conceived.
• Secondary infertility – Indicates previous pregnancy
but failure to conceive subsequently.

Ø Impairs detoxifying process
Ø Contribute to hormonal imbalance
Site of biosynthesis of oestrogen
LIVER :
• 90 % primary metabolism
• Acetaldehyde - Membrane damage
Cell necrosis

7. ENDOCRINE :
Adrenal gland depression - Slows release of hormones
NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCIES :
• Chronic gastritis
• Pancreatitis
• Calories from alcohol displace other nutrients.
• Decreased absorption.

8. MALES :
ØShort term alcohol usage in man leads to erection problems.
ØLong term alcoholism may cause permanent impotency.
ØInhibit Spermatogenesis
• Supressing Leydig cell synthesis of Testosterone
• Or possibly supressing Gonadotropin levels
ØSperm production impairment
• Low sperm count
• Reduced sperm motility
• Abnormal morphology

9. Ø VITAMIN AND MINERAL DEFICIENCY
• Vit E ,Vit C, Vit B12, Folic acid to improve spermatogenesis is probably utilised
to improve the general health.
• Zinc - Vital for male fertility ;makes up outer layer and tail
• Vitamin C - Important - Protect from Oxidative damage
Helps to stop agglutination .
All these are depleted.
Ø Chronic alcoholism : Permanent cell abnormality
Prostate damage

10. FEMALES
Hormonal imbalances
ØInterferes Ovulation or Menstrual cycle process
• Anovulation
• Amenorrhea
• Oligomenorrhea
Ø Luteal phase dysfunction
• Abnormalities in endometrial lining
Resulting in miscarriage
Ø Alcohol induced Hyperprolactinemia :
• Menstrual irregularities
• Loss of libido

• Madya - Qualities exactly opposite to ojas

LAKSHANAS - Dhatu kshaya
Shukra kshapana
Repeated exposure to Dushita desha
Dushita kala
Dushita anna
Divaswapa etc

16. OTHER POINTS :
• Dushita anna pana - Visha in unfavourable conditions.
• Madya is similar to Visha – Inappropriate matra, kala, preparation etc
• Teekshnadi guna – Rasadi soumya dhatu kshaya
• Depletion from Rasa to Shukra dhatu.

17. CONCLUSION :
ØBoth Ayurvedic and Modern medicine has clearly indicated the
role of Addiction in infertility.
ØIn Ayurveda role of alcohol addiction in infertility is given in the
concept of madatyaya and also in dushi visha.
ØMadatyaya - Vishada guna of madya results in Shukra kshaya.
ØThus while treating infertility addiction should be kept in
consideration.
