 Firstly, it‟s a „buzz‟ word;
really, nothing new.
 Cloud computing:
“Using the Internet more
widely to run applications
and manage data that‟s
stored offsite.”
 Normally, do all this through a
web browser.
 Can also do all this with
mobile devices via apps or a
browser.

(1) What is ‘Cloud’ Computing?
 You pay as you go, usually a monthly
subscription.
 Sometimes called „utility‟ computing, like using
utilities, electricity, phone, etc.
 Three levels:
 Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS): provides storage
facilities for documents, files and data in general.
 Software as a Service (SaaS): applications through a
browser; no programs installed on your PC/laptop.
 Platform as a Service (PaaS): basically, the operating
system in the cloud; can be used by any device,
PC/laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc.

(1) What is ‘Cloud’ Computing?
 There are four (4) primary cloud modals
available based on business size, type, etc:
 Private cloud: Operated solely for a single
organisation; hosted internally or externally.
 Community cloud: Shared among a number of
connected organizations; supports a specific
community having similar requirements.
 Public cloud: Owned and operated by third
party; available on a commercial basis by cloud
service provider.
 Hybrid cloud: Combination of two (2) or more of
the above cloud modals.

 Unreliable Internet; good speeds and constant
connection required.
 Unreliable security & confidentiality; might be
accessed by unauthorised personnel.
 Unpredicted/hidden costs; not fully revealed by
provider.
 Lack of risk and guarantee; service might not be
maintained or might „go down‟.
 Lack of backups; might not be easily available.
 Difficult to migrate old systems; might be
prohibitive.
 Extensive training; might be required.
 Barriers; No ownership, personnel resist change.

 The „cloud‟ won‟t go away.
 Might be „forced‟ into it, indirecly at least.
 It‟s not for all businesses/organisations.
 Weigh up „pros‟ and „cons‟.
 Please, please, please: Determine your
business goals/outcomes first, then work
out best vehicle; not the other way around.
 Ask reputable providers; talk to others
already using it.

Relatively lower cost of ownership- cloud ‘subscription’ comes off bottom line, less asset purchase.- no purchasing of multiple licences of software.- pay as you go, usually per user- dedicated server no longer required 2. Easier scalability- most services can be scaled up in terms of software features and storage- scales up if more personnel join business/organisation 3. Infrastructure – less need to update hardware- cost savings- Quick deployment 4. Mobility - easy access from almost any device- have many different types of hardware (could be a disadvantage) 5. Better use of personnel – better redirect bookkeeping and IT tasks- can focus on more important tasks 6. Data and information - Easier management and sharing 7. History – all carrying out cloud computing anyway- banking, email- if money lost, can be easily replaced. Not so with data. 8. Deployment: Implementation and training costs should be lower 10. (LAST) Better integration of systems – less ‘doubling up’ of data management.Mention better integration – what CLASS Training is doing with CRM  Accounts  Web site etc.

Security & confidentiality – might be accessed by unauthorised personnel- prone to attack- can minimise this with private cloud, but more cost- do you need to inform clients their data is stored in cloud?- associated risk- might violate compliance/quality assurance issues 3. Unpredicted/hidden costs – not fully revealed by provider.- Still need to maintain some hardware/software, e.g., antivirus- Cost of porting old data to cloud.- check these as with any provider- costs can vary based on speed, data traffic, etc- getting out clauses and costs, etc. 4. Risk and guarantee - service might not be maintained or might go down.- what if company shuts down- guarantee of uptime- Google Apps guarantees 99.9% uptime which is equivalent to 8.8 hours per year downtime. 5. Backups of business critical information might not be easily available- how often are backups done?- how do you restore data if errors made? 6. Migration of old systems might be prohibitive Migration problem is also a big concern about cloud computing. If the user wants to switch to some other Provider then it is not easy to transfer huge data from one provider to another 7. Extensive training might be required for new system 8. No ownership and barriers to change from personnel
