Assessment Task Instructions for Students
This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to apply brushed or rolled paint coatings to
different materials to form a protective and decorative painted finish. The unit includes preparation of the work area,
mixing of materials, application of paint, finishing of the surface and completion of clean-up activities.
All equipment selected must be in good working order, and you must wear correct PPE throughout the entire task.
You must followall safety instructions throughout the task. If at any time you are deemed to be unsafe the assessor
will stop your assessment and this will be counted as your first attempt.
Note:
You are required to take photos of yourself undertaking this practical task.
This evidence will be added to the eLearn drop box where you teacher/ assessor will be able to mark your
assessment.
Assessment range and conditions:
Assessment will beconducted in simulated work environment at CIT Bruce under teacher supervision atall times during
your normal CIT day.If at any stage the assessor deems the assessmentto be unsafeit will bestopped. Access to all
resources,manual and standards is permitted. All mobilephones are to be switch off duringthe assessment.You will have
access to techniques, procedures, information,resources and aids which is normally beavailableon the worksite.
Materials provided: All tools and equipment to apply paintby brush and roller,assessmentdocumentation
Materials you may need: PPE.
Information for students: You may have two (2) attempts for this assessment.
 If your first attempt is notsuccessful,your teacher will discuss your results with you and will arrangea second
attempt.
 If your second attempt is not successful,you will berequired to re-enrol in this unit.
Only one re-assessmentattempt will begranted for each assessmentitem.

Activity 1 –Planning and Preparation
You arerequired to demonstrate you have the skills and knowledgeto demonstrate you can correctly plan and prepare to
undertake work.
How you will be assessed
To complete this task you need to:
1. Demonstrate you followinstructions
2. Select the correct tools,equipment and PPE for the given task
3. Identify hazards,assesstherisk,and determine what controls need to be applied,incl udingany signs or barricades
(participatein toolbox talks and SWMS, JSA)
4. Check tools areworking correctly and have safety guards fitted. Report any faults to your supervisor or trainer

To complete this task you must give a verbal responsevia Ammonite for no longer than 15 seconds Explain the
preparation required for an unpainted concrete driveway.

To complete this task you must show that you can prepare a number of unpainted surfaces,each beingno smaller than
one meter squared:

 duster brushes
 fillingknives and blades
 hand sanders
 mechanical sanders
 water blasters
 nail punches
 putty knives
 scrapers

 moisture meter
1. Examine the surface,report any faults to your supervisor
2. Carry out moisturetest and record results below
3. Select an appropriatefiller for the surfaceand fill any imperfections
3. Sand any imperfections usingthe correct grade sandpaper
4. Ensure the surfaceis dustfree
5. Set up drop-sheets ready for painting
Activity 4 –Clean Up Work Area
Your are required to clean up your work and store all tools and equipment.
1. Clean all tools and equipment usingthe correct solvents
2. Check tools and equipment and report faults
3. Disposeof all wasteaccordingto environmental standards
4. Return equipment to store accordingto safety standards
