A Brief About ‘Samsung’..
• SAMSUNG is the one of the largest brand in the world in electronics sector.
• founded by Lee Byung- Chull, in1938 as a trading company.
• It is a South Korean company and there headquarter is in Samsung town.
• Having recorded revenue around $244.4 billion (2021)
Samsung in India
• Samsung Electronics commenced operations in India in December 1995
• Two R&D centers in India- Delhi & Bangalore.
• Samsung mission and vision is “ to devote its talent and technology to creating superior products and
services that contribute to a better global society. ”
Dimension of organization Structure
Complexity
 Horizontal
 Vertical
 Spatial
Formalization
 Skilled jobs
 Unskilled jobs
Centralization vs Decentralization
Environmental
uncertainty
• Samsung has complex and unstable
environment as they manufacture a large
number of electronic products of
different varieties.
• As we know Samsung has a larger
number of electronic products such as
mobile phones, television, refrigerator,
etc it is uncertain when the trends change
and they also need to move forward in
order to survive in such complex
environment.
Miles & Snow Typology
• Samsung has an Analyzer strategy typology as them maintain their products category according to the market
trends.
• Their environment also changes moderately according to the market.
Types of knowledge technology
 Knowledge technology is defined as the technology which are designed in such way that it
improve the designed and also the functions of the particular electronics device at the same
time.
 In this case it lie under engineering which has a high task variability which means an
individual cannot predicts problems in advance and many tasks are unique.
 Engineering consists of the mostly mechanic structure it has the most moderate formalization
which means highly formalized in which rules for expected behavior are clearly articulated &
followed and task are also standardized.
• Centralization is also moderate in which activities involving planning and decision-making
within an organization are concentrated to a specific product.
• It also deal with the formal training which means training that has a structured and defined
curriculum, and also provides an opportunity for training participants to have question timely
and answered during the training or at a later date.
• This organization also have moderate span which deal with the number of subordinates who
can be managed efficiently by a superior.
• Good verbal and written communication are an essential parameter to deliver and understand
information quickly and accurately. Clear and precise which also helps in building trust and
credibility.
• It follows machine bureaucracy .
• It has quality management team which is its technostructure and it is in horizontal limited decentralization.
• The company comes under a mass production firm
Matrix structure of Samsung
• It follows the Standardization of skil0ls
Machine Bureaucracy
Mintzberg model of Samsung
• strategic apex - CEO Middle apex -R&D , Executive Director, Quality and
development team
• Operating core - Management team, technical sales purchase management team ,
production management team
• Support staff -workers , sales officer, and sales person
• Technostructure - HR , Training and planning officers
Divisionalized form
• Any organization that divides its employees and other resources into different groups based on regional and product differences, such
that each group is responsible and answerable for its own actions, has a divisional structure.
• For example, the electronics department of Samsung is completely responsible for its own actions. Moreover, a firm’s city division
might be completely independent of its other city’s division. Each division would have its own advertising, sales, production,
accounting, and development staff. The divisional structure tends to ease the tasks of each level of management. It becomes easier
for them to evaluate staff and divisional performances and base their compensations on their success rate.
The picture above shows the model of a firm which is in the divisional structure. Its division is on the grounds of the type of product that is,
consumer products, industrial products, and healthcare products. As it can clearly be seen, each division has its own marketing director,
operations director, and finance director. None of the managerial staff is common among any divisions.
DECENTRALIZATION
• It has limited horizontal decentralization
• It has a Quality department to make sure that all the product are up to the standard.
• Samsung has the world's best QMS based on international standards such as ISO 9001 and IATF 16949
LIFE CYCLE
Entrepreneurial stage (1938 -1960)
• It was started with only US$27 by Lee Byung-chul as a trading company.
• Samsung began as a grocery store, trading and exporting goods produced in and around the city.
• Goal was not clear
Collectivity stage (1960 – 1980
• In this period the mission was clear ,so they entered into the electronic market with the formation of several
electronics-focused divisions.
• Lee Byung-chul established himself as a leader.
Formalisation and control stage (1980 – 2000)
• Started it overseas production unit.
• In 1995 achievied sales KRW 1 trillion, export KRW 1 billion.
• Switched to an independent management system and changing the name to 'Samsung Electro-Mechanics’
Elaboration stage (2000 – present)
• Samsung acquired companies that developed technologies for electronic devices.
• Acquired organizations that would help it expand its offerings in medical technology, smart TVs, OLED displays,
home automation, printing solutions, cloud solutions, payment solutions, and artificial intelligence.
• Diversified its product by announcing Gear VR and Galaxy series in mobile phones.
• In 2017, Samsung was given governmental permission to test a self-driving car.
Conclusion
• In this assignment, we have learned the characteristics of the two types of organizational structures,
which are mechanistic organization and organic organization that concern the work specialization,
departmentalization, authority and responsible, centralization and decentralization, span of control
and formalization.
• After analyzing these factors and searching all the related information of Samsung Electronics, we
could conclude that this company is a mechanistic organization. Thus, our analyzing ability could be
strengthen when carry out this assignment. Besides, we have a better understanding to recognize
and differentiate these two organization models.
• Furthermore, more knowledge about this company could be gained during the research.
