This presentation will emphasize the intersection between art and health, using the Photovoice project to reflect how art can be a modality for assessing barriers to health, health education, and empowering community members to advocate for health promotion. After receiving a small grant, a Master of Social Work student, Master of Public Health Student, a Somali interpreter, and a community health center came together to realize this alternative means of health literacy across the realms of art, social justice, interprofessional education and cultural competency.

2. Challenging Assumptions
“Anaa soo sawiray siligan sababta oo ah hadu
uu dhexen laha wadada iyo jid amaan bey u
ahaan lehed cayelka in ay ku cayaraan.”
“I took this picture of the fence because if a
fence built like this was in between the road
and the playground, it would be safer for the
children to play.”
3. Challenging Assumptions
“Meshan waa gurigeya gadshiisa
waana wasakh waxeyna u
bahantahay nadifin.”
“This is my backyard. It is dirty
and unhealthy. It needs to be
cleaned.”
4. • Portland, Maine is a major
resettlement area for refugee and
asylum-seeking individuals, who
according to the US Censes (2008-
2012), account for approximately
11.2% of the city’s population.
• This population faces major barriers-
language, housing, transportation,
and cultural barriers, along with a
host of other issues.
• There is a deficit in information
regarding health disparities among
African immigrants (Pavlish, Noor, &
Brandt, 2010), which can lead to
medical facilities and providers
lacking in cultural competence and
understanding in perceptions of
health.

Quick synopsis of Photovoice- Caroline Wang founded in 1990sParticipatory action strategy = community members are the experts of their experiences/environmentsDeveloping collective strategies for change
What’s the first thing you think of when you see this picture?-Barrier/obstacle, restricted access, isolation, captivityParticipant’s see this as illustrating the need for increased safety, protection rather than a barrierParticipant observed lack of control in building fence
some of the barriers may be especially difficult for women, who may have less control according to cultural gender roles
Lily: Participants gather together and begin a dialogue regarding their shared experiences. Community ToolboxAt end when Lily is discussing the meetings, I can jump in and talk about my art background and how I trained the women on using the cameras…. Studied art in college. Instructed women how to use the cameras and discussed basic principles of photography- lighting, angles, positioning, layout, etc.
Exercise & Culture
Alternative means to exercise
Exercise & climate
Exercise: identified strategy for change- community room, yoga class, space for women to gather
Community Safety: fence, housing authority, lack of control over environment
Community safety: littering, parents worrying about future health/development of children in community/unhealthy behavior transferring from adults to youth
individual responsibilities vs. the community’s responsibilities
Autonomy: Self-determinationvs inability to control one’s environment
Photovoice process helped to express feelings of transition, loss, lack of control ability to control the lens
The final discussion- thoughtful communication between participants, UNE, PCHP concerning the experience and the results. Women expressed pride in their work and identified this project as especially valuable compared with others done in Riverton in the past. Forecaster article (front page), also in Bangor daily news - bringing more attention to the issues the woman are facing, more recognition for their work. Empowerment
