  1. The CalHEAT Truck Research Center has recently completed its Research and Market Transformation Roadmap for Medium and Heavy Duty Trucks. The Roadmap provides pathways and stepping stones through the year 2020 that will be required to develop and deploy zero- and near-zero emission transportation technologies and facilitate the State in meetings its environmental goals. This research focused on Natural gas a key component in three of the thirteen technology strategies for medium and heavy duty vehicles across the entire state of California. The work we are proposing here is a deeper and more focused review of heavy duty vehicles and their drivetrain options and infrastructure options resulting in a roadmap or series of stepping stones towards commercial product offerings in the year 2023 for regions serviced by the Southern California Gas Company. Natural gas is already a strong component of the clean transportation strategies of these Southern California regions but little has been done to forecast or provide stepping stones of the future technology needs for natural gas vehicles, especially in the heavy-duty classes (7 to 8). The significant price advantage and abundant supplies of natural gas reinforce the notion that it will remain and grow as a major part of the clean transportation portfolio for at least the next fifteen to twenty-five years.

  4. Heavy duty trucks are the largest contributor to the NOx inventory in both regions and a high potential target for emissions reductions from conversion to natural gas. Locomotives also represent significant opportunities in both basins and have historically been very difficult to regulate.
  5. Coming back to the five emissions reduction strategies we just discussed, we can see there are a great many technologies associated with each strategy. Many of these technologies are in use today (Near term) and can be combined to provide significant GHG and NOx reductions. Other technologies are in development and are expected to play a role in the long term. Natural gas vehicles employing these technologies are an important path to reducing NOx and GHG emissions from the mobile source sector. Natural gas trucks can use a menu of technology approaches to reduce both criteria pollutants and GHG emissions. These technology approaches will advance and improve over the near term and longer term. These paths exist, either already in development, or will be in development. Natural gas can follow all of these paths.
