2. What do you do,
when you have
nowhere to go?
-Statewide 12-15000
people are homeless
in Hawaii at some
point during the year.
-Any given day in
Hawaii there are over
6300 homeless.
-Over 30% of the
homeless in Hawaii
are children.
3. ● Everyone wants to help,
but no one knows how.
● Because Homelessness is
a combination of so many
issues it is difficult to
“solve.”
● High rent, high cost of
living, drug abuse, low
wages, mental disorders,
and other issues
contribute to the problem.
4. What’s being done?
-Government has passed laws
against sleeping or sitting in most
public areas. This is to limit
tourists contact with the homeless
population.
-They issue tickets and kick them
out of parks and other areas
where they sleep.
-The homeless population is
essentially always on the move,
looking for places they can stay
without being harassed.

NGOs working with the
homeless in Hawaii.
● There are NGOs that
deal with Short term
“Immediate solutions,”
and others that deal
with more “Long term
solutions.”
6. Short term solutions
● Food banks
● Homeless shelters
● Medical assistance
● Free materials/goods
● Food stamps
● Anything that helps them
sustain their lifestyle
currently, but doesn’t help
end their “Homelessness.”
7. LongTerm
Solutions
● Vocational training in
marketable skills.
● Relocation to
“Transitional
shelters” and then to
discounted housing.
● Drug recovery
programs
● Counseling for
mental health.
● Flights to go back
home. “Return to
home program”
8. ● Currently most
