Course Description:
U.S. businesses operate in a constantly changing global business environment. This is an introduction
to that environment. Students completing the course should be capable of analyzing various forms of
business ownership and sizes or organizations, understanding ethics and social responsibility of
businesses in a global market, analyzing the economic challenges facing businesses, understanding
global competitive methodologies, and understand domestic and international labor-management
relations issues, and the use of technology and information in business.
Learning Objectives:
➢ Analyze and compare business operations in a global setting.
➢ Discuss the issues of ethics, social responsibility and globalization.
➢ Develop the basic skills of business research, problem solving, and decision-making.
➢ Construct an independent, creative project to demonstrate these skills.
➢ Develop the basic skills necessary to begin development of a business plan.
➢ Evaluate personal strengths, weaknesses and their adaptability to a business environment.
➢ Review management of services and manufacturing operations.
➢ Explain ethics and ethical behavior, and then demonstrate the major ways in which
companies can promote ethics in their workplaces.
➢ Analyze and explain the economic challenges faced by companies moving to a global
environment.

We will be using the Cengage MindTap software.
We also have an option to purchase the Unlimited package where
you can purchase one code and have access to multiple
textbooks, refer to the Required Tools -Textbook & Software
page in Canvas.
Dropping
Students will be dropped if they have not participated in a discussion or submitted a homework
assignment for three consecutive weeks.
Disruptive Behavior
If a student behaves in a manner that negatively affects other class members, he or she is guilty of
disruptive behavior and will be dealt with according to MSJC policy.
Disability
Mt. San Jacinto College abides by the American with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that prohibits federal and state agencies or programs from discriminating
against qualified individuals with disabilities. Students in this course who have a documented
disability, that limits a major life activity which may have some impact on your work in this class and
for which you may require accommodations should meet with a counselor in Disabled Student
Services and Program (DSP&S) as soon as possible.

Assignments
(60% of grade)
Assignments consist of MindTap assignments, textbook assignments
and discussion assignments. The MindTap assignments are designed to
help you learn the concepts from the chapter. Textbook assignments
entail written responses to business cases. These assignments are
designed to help you improve your writing and critical thinking skills.
Discussion assignments require you to participate in an online
discussion to improve your communication and collaboration skills.

This is a reflection on the concepts that everyone should know after
taking this course.

This project is based on following the developments of an existing
company, presenting, and reporting on the developments.

Textbook Assignments:
 The Textbook Assignments are in the back of the textbook and in the MindTap Cengage
software. In the textbook you can read about the case and in the Cengage software you can
watch a video about the case. I suggest you read and watch the video to get the full perspective.
 General Assignment Policies
• You are responsible for keeping track of your assignment due dates. When assignments are
received and graded, the grade will be posted in Canvas. It is your responsibility to
periodically check your grades. Keep a copy of all your assignments and correspondence
until the class has ended.
• Assignments may be handed in earlier than the date given. Late assignments will not be
accepted. 
• Should changes be made to the Assignment Schedule, the changes will be posted in the
Announcements area of Canvas.

 Submitting Textbook Assignments
All textbook assignments must be submitted as a document in DOC, DOCX, or RTF format.
This is so I can make comments and return them to you.
To submit textbook assignments:
1. From the main course screen, click on Modules
2. Click on the week the assignment was introduced, refer to the Syllabus.
3. From the list of items, click on the textbook assignment title
4. In the upper right corner click on the Submit Assignment button, click on the Browse My
Computer button, select the file, then press open. You can send a comment to the instructor
in the Comments section.
5. Press the Submit Assignment button.
6. You will notice on the right, the system will say Submission, Turned In!
Discussion Board Assignments:
 Discussion assignments, both original and responses, must be completed during the week
posted, no late discussions will be accepted. 
 For each assignment you will be provided a case to respond to, a question to answer, or an
opportunity to present a business article. These assignments require two components, first that
you post an original response and second that you comment on responses posted by at least two
of your classmates. 
To begin a discussion thread:
1. From the main course screen, click on Discussions or the Module the discussion was
assigned.
2. Click on the forum that corresponds to the current week.
3. Click on Reply
4. Type your response. Even though this is a discussion, professional language and grammar
are expected. A detailed rubric is posted in the main Discussions area.
5. Press the Post Reply button to send and post your initial response.
 Responding to a Discussion Board Thread
Whenever a discussion assignment is assigned you are required to respond to one classmate’s
posts. Also, you will not be able to reply until you have posted an original response.
To respond to a discussion thread:
1. From the main course screen, click on Discussions or the Module the discussion was
assigned.
2. Click on the forum that corresponds to the current week.
3. Click on a classmate’s post.
4. After reading their posts, press Reply
5. Type your response in the message area. The responses should offer another option, a
detailed comment, expand on the post, or answer a question. A detailed rubric is posted
in the main Discussions area.
6. Press the Post Reply button to send and post your response.
Cengage – MindTap Assignments:
 MindTap Assignments – These assignments are fill in the blank and multiple choice. They are
timed at 30 minutes and you can take them two times and the system will take the best score.
 Video Assignments - For these assignments you will watch a video, then answer questions in
the middle and the end of the video. This is not timed. You will only have one attempt to
answer the questions.
 Refer to the Syllabus or Module area for more detail on point values and due dates.
Exam:
 The final exam must be completed by the due date indicated on the Assignment Schedule. If a
problem arises you must notify the instructor prior to the exam due date.
Projects:
 There are two projects required in this course. The first is an individual project and the second
is a team project. The specific instructions are available in the Assignments area of Canvas.
The specific point values and due dates are identified in the Syllabus Assignment Schedule.
Instructor and Student Communications:
 Communication between the instructor and students are critical in an online course. There are
several methods of communication available:
• E-mail – If you have a question or comment that you only want to share with the instructor,
then send an e-mail to chennessy@msjc.edu. I will not share these messages with other
students. I will respond within 72 hours.
• Telephone – You may call me at (951) 639-5526, however I may not be able to respond for
up to 48 hours or longer if is over a weekend. I only check phone messages on Tuesday and
Thursday.
• Discussion Board – There is an area in the Discussion Board titled Student Questions. If
you post a question here it is open to the whole class, so you may get responses from your
classmates. I will respond within 72 hours.
• My Grades – When I post grades, if you do not earn full credit I will always provide input.
Even if you do earn full credit I may posts comments. It is very important that you view this
area on a regular base because implementing the suggestions will help you improve your
subsequent submissions. I will have assignments graded with 5 days of their submission.
To view your grades and my comments:
1. From the main courses screen, click on the My Grades button.
2. Click on your score, it will be blue
3. You will see my comments on the left portion of the screen. For textbook
assignment, I often provided an attached document that provided detailed
explanation on where improvement was needed.

This is an introduction to that environment. Students completing the course should be capable of analyzing various forms of business ownership and sizes or organizations, understanding ethics and social responsibility of businesses in a global market, analyzing the economic challenges facing businesses, understanding global competitive methodologies, and understand domestic and international labor-management relations issues, and the use of technology and information in business. Learning Objectives: ➢ Analyze and compare business operations in a global setting. ➢ Discuss the issues of ethics, social responsibility and globalization. ➢ Develop the basic skills of business research, problem solving, and decision-making. ➢ Construct an independent, creative project to demonstrate these skills. ➢ Develop the basic skills necessary to begin development of a business plan. ➢ Evaluate personal strengths, weaknesses and their adaptability to a business environment. ➢ Review management of services and manufacturing operations. ➢ Explain ethics and ethical behavior, and then demonstrate the major ways in which companies can promote ethics in their workplaces. ➢ Analyze and explain the economic challenges faced by companies moving to a global environment. * The objectives in bold are assessed student learning outcomes. Required Text and Materials: (all available at MSJC bookstore) Pride/Hughes/Kapoor - Bundle: Foundations of Business, Loose- leaf Version, 6th + MindTap Business, 1 term (6 months) Printed Access Card 9781337738286 We will be using the Cengage MindTap software. We also have an option to purchase the Unlimited package where you can purchase one code and have access to multiple textbooks, refer to the Required Tools -Textbook & Software page in Canvas. Dropping Students will be dropped if they have not participated in a discussion or submitted a homework assignment for three consecutive weeks. Disruptive Behavior If a student behaves in a manner that negatively affects other class members, he or she is guilty of disruptive behavior and will be dealt with according to MSJC policy. Disability Mt. San Jacinto College abides by the American with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that prohibits federal and state agencies or programs from discriminating against qualified individuals with disabilities. Grading Scale: A----- 90%-100% B----- 80%-89.99% C-----70%-79.99% D-----60%-69.99% Task Explanation Total* Assignments (60% of grade) Assignments consist of MindTap assignments, textbook assignments and discussion assignments. The MindTap assignments are designed to help you learn the concepts from the chapter. Textbook assignments entail written responses to business cases. These assignments are designed to help you improve your writing and critical thinking skills. Discussion assignments require you to participate in an online discussion to improve your communication and collaboration skills. Refer to the Assignment Schedule for specific points values 523 Final Exam (10%) This is a reflection on the concepts that everyone should know after taking this course. 90 Projects (29% of grade) This project is based on following the developments of an existing company, presenting, and reporting on the developments. 250 Total 863
  • 3. *If a task is not assigned or an additional task added, points will be adjusted to reflect the change. Textbook Assignments:  The Textbook Assignments are in the back of the textbook and in the MindTap Cengage software. In the textbook you can read about the case and in the Cengage software you can watch a video about the case. I suggest you read and watch the video to get the full perspective.  General Assignment Policies • You are responsible for keeping track of your assignment due dates. When assignments are received and graded, the grade will be posted in Canvas. It is your responsibility to periodically check your grades. Keep a copy of all your assignments and correspondence until the class has ended. • Assignments may be handed in earlier than the date given. Late assignments will not be accepted.  • Should changes be made to the Assignment Schedule, the changes will be posted in the Announcements area of Canvas.   Submitting Textbook Assignments All textbook assignments must be submitted as a document in DOC, DOCX, or RTF format. This is so I can make comments and return them to you. To submit textbook assignments: 1. From the main course screen, click on Modules 2. Click on the week the assignment was introduced, refer to the Syllabus. 3. From the list of items, click on the textbook assignment title 4. In the upper right corner click on the Submit Assignment button, click on the Browse My Computer button, select the file, then press open. You can send a comment to the instructor in the Comments section. 5. Press the Submit Assignment button. 6. You will notice on the right, the system will say Submission, Turned In! Discussion Board Assignments:  Discussion assignments, both original and responses, must be completed during the week posted, no late discussions will be accepted.   For each assignment you will be provided a case to respond to, a question to answer, or an opportunity to present a business article. These assignments require two components, first that you post an original response and second that you comment on responses posted by at least two of your classmates.  To begin a discussion thread: 1. From the main course screen, click on Discussions or the Module the discussion was assigned. 2. Click on the forum that corresponds to the current week. 3. Click on Reply 4. Type your response. Even though this is a discussion, professional language and grammar are expected. A detailed rubric is posted in the main Discussions area.

Press the Post Reply button to send and post your initial response.  Responding to a Discussion Board Thread Whenever a discussion assignment is assigned you are required to respond to one classmate’s posts. Also, you will not be able to reply until you have posted an original response. To respond to a discussion thread: 1. From the main course screen, click on Discussions or the Module the discussion was assigned. 2. Click on the forum that corresponds to the current week. 3. Click on a classmate’s post. 4. After reading their posts, press Reply 5. Type your response in the message area. The responses should offer another option, a detailed comment, expand on the post, or answer a question. A detailed rubric is posted in the main Discussions area. 6. Press the Post Reply button to send and post your response. Cengage – MindTap Assignments:  MindTap Assignments – These assignments are fill in the blank and multiple choice. They are timed at 30 minutes and you can take them two times and the system will take the best score.  Video Assignments - For these assignments you will watch a video, then answer questions in the middle and the end of the video. This is not timed. You will only have one attempt to answer the questions.  Refer to the Syllabus or Module area for more detail on point values and due dates. Exam:  The final exam must be completed by the due date indicated on the Assignment Schedule. If a problem arises you must notify the instructor prior to the exam due date. Projects:  There are two projects required in this course. The first is an individual project and the second is a team project. The specific instructions are available in the Assignments area of Canvas. The specific point values and due dates are identified in the Syllabus Assignment Schedule. Instructor and Student Communications:  Communication between the instructor and students are critical in an online course. There are several methods of communication available: • E-mail – If you have a question or comment that you only want to share with the instructor, then send an e-mail to chennessy@msjc.edu. I will not share these messages with other students. I will respond within 72 hours. • Telephone – You may call me at (951) 639-5526, however I may not be able to respond for up to 48 hours or longer if is over a weekend. I only check phone messages on Tuesday and Thursday.

If you post a question here it is open to the whole class, so you may get responses from your classmates. I will respond within 72 hours. • My Grades – When I post grades, if you do not earn full credit I will always provide input. Even if you do earn full credit I may posts comments. It is very important that you view this area on a regular base because implementing the suggestions will help you improve your subsequent submissions.
