The CHRISTUS Spohn Health System mission statement is to extend the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.
The 5 Core Values are as follows: Dignity: Respect for the worth of every person, recognition and commitment to the value of diverse individuals and perspectives, and special concern for the poor and underserved. Integrity: Honesty, justice, and consistency in all relationships. Excellence: High standards of service and performance. Compassion: Service in a spirit of empathy, love, and concern. Stewardship: Wise and just use of talents and resources in a collaborative manner.
Vision: CHRISTUS HEALTH, a Catholic health ministry, will be a leader, a partner and an advocate in the creation of innovative health and wellness solutions that improve the lives of individuals and communities so that all may experience God's healing presence and love.
CHRISTUS is Latin for "Christ," which is the basis of the mission statement for the health system. Our name choice also recognizes the heritage of our two congregational sponsors, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in Houston and San Antonio. Jesus Christ is the Incarnate Word, the Word of God made flesh. It is, therefore, only fitting that it is in another form of His name that our health ministries are called together.
The symbol of CHRISTUS Spohn reflects the Mission statement and it contains: a purple and white cross with a flowing banner signifying Christ.
The banner also signifies motion in the sense that they are fully acting in moving the service and ministry forward to all communities.
In the Coastal Bend, The Christus Spohn Health System is a very large system comprised of 6 hospitals and various clinics and health centers.
Kleberg, Alice, Beeville, and three hospitals here in Corpus Christi (Shoreline, South, and Memorial).
The health system is a non-profit organization that expands all over Texas and Mexico.
The specific department I work in is located next to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital. Memorial Hospital is located at 2606 Hospital Boulevard, Corpus Christi, Texas. I am interning in the Community Health and Wellness department that is in the Medical Center located at 2436 Morgan Avenue, Corpus Christi, Texas across the street from Retama Manor Nursing Center. The Community Health and Wellness Coordinator and the person who is my preceptor is Theresa Loe, Rn, MSN. There are three main components to the Community Health and Wellness program.
There are three main components to the Community Health and Wellness program:
Community Health and Wellness:
Employer-Sponsor Wellness Program
Community Wellness
Women’s Services
Each part is under the supervision of different people. There are two Vice Presidents of the program. Matt Lohemeier is Vice President of Mission Integration and Kelly Elkins is Vice President of Strategy and Business Development. Under Matthew is Marjorie Chavez who is Director of Mission Services. Marjorie reports to Matthew only. Under Kelly is Edward Vargas who is Director of Business Development. Edward reports to Kelly only. Under Marjorie and Edward is Theresa Loe the Coordinator for Community Health and Wellness, Rebecca Lawhon the Nurse Practitioner and, a position that is available as the Marketing Coordinator for Community Health and Wellness. Marjorie oversees most community wellness and Edward oversees most of the business development. Theresa Loe reports to both Edward and Marjorie and she oversees the development of corporate wellness and community health and wellness. Edward is in charge of the corporate wellness part and Marjorie is in charge of the rest. Rebecca Lawhon is the Nurse Practitioner who oversees the Women’s Services CareVan and reports to Marjorie only. The Marketing Coordinator reports to both Marjorie and Edward. Wellness marketing is not a fourth element of the program only an extension of it because it entails both community wellness and corporate wellness.
There are three main components to the Community Health and Wellness program:
Community Health and Wellness: Employer-Sponsor Wellness Program, Community Wellness, Women’s Services
The Employer-Sponsor Wellness program which is offered to businesses in the coastal bend who are interested in the overall wellness of their employees. This part of the program looks for clients in all parts of South Texas willing to use the Spohn system to determine risk factors of their employees and improve overall health. This section of Community Health and Wellness uses different kinds of technology to aid in the process. They use an information system called “Wellsource” that surveys the employees in the organizations about different health determinants in their lives as well as keep a log of the biometrics and lab results of each employee. From Wellsource we can view different trends of the employees and how the overall health of the organization is improving or diminishing. The section of Community Health and Wellness is usually called “Corporate Wellness” in the office. (Christus Spohn, 2015)
The Community Wellness portion involves the Spohn CareVan. The Spohn CareVan goes out into the community in Corpus Christi and to the rural areas of South Texas, like Corpus Christi, Alice, Beeville, and Kingsville to provide free health care services. This part of the program believes in taking wellness on the road as an advanced mobile care facility. They provide education, free health screenings for early detection of heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes. They also provide several different tests, basic biometrics, vaccines, referrals, and counseling. They go to different sites around the coastal bend that include schools, health fairs, churches, and shelters. All services are free to the uninsured and underinsured individual. The CareVan is staffed with a Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurses, Community Health Worker, Medical Assistants, Transporters, and Volunteers who provide the services. Other organizations partner with the CareVan team to expand the access to care. (Christus Spohn, 2015)
The third part of the Community Health and Wellness program is Women’s Services provided through the Spohn Carevan. They provide gynecological services like pap smears, pregnancy tests, mammograms, lab work, referrals, and counseling to promote the health of the mother and of the baby. The Women’s Services CareVan will also see people who have other health issues, they never deny a person. They will even see men if the need is there. They also provide STD testing and treatment and prenatal care for people who need it. If a woman is receiving prenatal care through the program they will be then referred in their seventh month of pregnancy to a physician or clinic for continuing care.
My educational requirement was to create a diabetes healthcare resource guide that was specifically for the underinsured and uninsured communities of the Coastal Bend. It is to be used to be given out to those who need help looking for services. I was able to obtain my information through the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services Resource guide, the CHRISTUS Spohn Healthcare Resource Guide, and the internet.
The Resource Guide consist of 7 parts: Prescription Assistance/ Supplies, Medical Care/ Laboratories, Dental, Vision, Diabetes Education, Transportation Assistance, and Other Resources/ Websites.
This is the inside of the pamphlet I created listed you can see the main section headings in bolded purple while the rest is in black. The inside of the pamphlet consist of prescription assistance/supplies, medical care/ laboratories, dental, and vision. Under the categories I have included the organization name, the contact number of the organization, and any extra details needed like extensions or locations. As you can see there is a lot of information that could be beneficial to anyone looking for help in these areas.
This is the outside of the pamphlet, again you can see the consistency of the main section headings in bolded purple while the rest is in black. The outside of the pamphlet consist of diabetes education, transportation assistance, and resources/ websites. Under the categories I have included the organization name, the contact number of the organization, and any extra details needed like extensions or locations. The resources section includes websites that can go into greater detail of additional services needed. I wanted to ensure that the mission statement was included in the pamphlet so that I could reflect the organizations core values into this project. I also included a website on the front fold of the pamphlet so that anyone who has this resource guide could direct themselves to the website for any additional resources or questions.
Through my internship I have had the privilege to attend corporate meetings regarding the wellness of the organizations employees. I have also had the privilege to aid the nurses in any registration for patients on the Spohn CareVan in several different communities, corporate fairs, health fairs, and clinics. As well as attend several Diabetes education classes and finally I’ve had the opportunity to have hands on training and experience with budgets, schedules, and wellness reports.
All of what I have learned through my experience as an intern has seriously allowed me to grow as a person. I honestly had no idea how it really was going to be. I learned the ins and outs of the Community Health and Wellness program and how each part clicks and functions. Through this experience, I have had the opportunity to see myself as a manager and where I ultimately want to be in life.
