My philosophy of health education is that in order to be a health educator you
have to educate on the aspects of health which include mental, physical, emotional,
spiritual, environmental, and social. Health is not just the absence of disease but the fact
that all of these aspects are fulfilled. In order for you to be successful in your career I feel
as though you need to inform people that not one but all of these aspects need to be done
in order of them to be actually considered healthy.
The first point is that in order for you to be healthy you have to make sure that
you are mentally and emotionally healthy because if you aren’t you can cause bodily
harm to yourself which is in fact not healthy. You also have to make sure you have your
social needs filled not meaning going out every weekend partying just meaning you have
a social group of friends and family. If these two things are fulfilled they most likely
won’t lead to physical illness because sometimes when you are emotionally, socially, and
mentally sick you can cause stress on your body which leads to physical illness. My
philosophy is that I need to teach people to keep these aspects in line with each other.
The second point is that I need to inform people on how to keep these aspects
fulfilled. There are ways to cope with not having friends like going out to community
events and meeting new people. Also, you can take yourself out of emotionally draining
situations by stepping back and learning to let things or people who aren’t helping you in
good ways go. My philosophy of health education is that all in all you have to make sure
you educate on how to keep all the components of health fulfilled in order to be
“healthy.” (http://homepages.gac.edu/~apeterso/hephil.html)
The second point is that in order for a person to be “healthy” they also need to
have spiritual aspects fulfilled. I believe that whatever higher power you worship you
should be in touch with that. If you are not in touch with this aspect it could lead to you
not being happy with your life and in turn sending you down a spiral that can lead to
unhealthy life choices. Unhealthy life choices can lead to health risks mentally and
physically. My philosophy of health education is that the spiritual elements have to be
aligned with the other elements in order to be physically and emotionally healthy.
The third point is that you have to environmental aspects are fulfilled in order to
be healthy. These aspects include where you live and things around you that could lead
you to be unhealthy. If you are not comfortable in the place you live or work it can lead to
you being unhealthy. If you are in an environment that is not safe you can get hurt which
in turn would lead to you not being in a “healthy” state.
In conclusion I am very passionate about helping my community learn what it
takes to fulfill all aspects of health in order to in fact be “healthy”. I would love to work
at a clinic when I finish school to educate the community on HIV because that is a major
epidemic here in Beaumont. I love helping people who aren’t able to access the needed
education regarding their health and would love to see a decrease in the trends of
unhealthy people in my community. I feel as though my philosophy hasn’t changed from
the beginning of my health degree education until now.
