This document discusses DIYbio, which involves citizens conducting biology experiments outside of traditional labs. It notes that DIYbio allows for exploration with different motivations and approaches to science. Laboratories are now expanded beyond traditional settings to include kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and arts spaces. DIYbio is facilitated by easier collaboration online and cheaper tools like microcontrollers. It also discusses open source tools, consumables, community labs, low-cost experiments, events, and questions around conducting science outside of research institutions.
12. Events
● DIYbio codes event Europe and America
● development of a draft DIYbio code that
may serve as a framework for helping us
achieve a vibrant, productive and safe
global community of DIYbio practitioners,
regional groups, and community labs.
13. Scholarship
● Human practice
● DIYbio is part of:
– maker/hacker culture
– Peer2peer production
14. Questions
● Should science be done outside the research ?
● What type?
● What safety issues?
● What regulatory issues?
